The Society's President, Gordon "Bo" Bohannan, is the fortunate possessor of his father's and grandfather's extensive research into the history of Surry County, Virginia. He has already made available a reprinting of his grandfather's valuable book, Old Surry by A. W. Bohannan. (See the What's New page for a link to information.)

At the September 2002 meeting, "Bo" displayed an old photograph of two Surry Confederate Veterans. We are pleased to present it here as one more piece in the Surry History puzzle. UPDATE 1!    Thanks to Betty Ellis, we have more information! Betty writes:
According to UNDER THE STARS AND BARS, A History of the Surry Light Artillery, by Jones and Wallace, p. 284. Dr. Joseph N. Jones wrote about his imprisonment. At the end of the article, p. 287, "On the 2nd of June, 1865, I was released from prison, and on the evening of the 3rd arrived at the home on my old friend, George H. Crump, near Chuckatuck. I was accompanied by Dr. Samuel Wilson, of Surry. J. N. Jones." This is the only mention of Samuel Wilson and there in none for Joseph Green.

UPDATE 2!   We now have information about Joseph M. Green, thanks to Bob Greene, one of Joseph's descendants! Bob points out that Joseph appears in the 1860 Surry County Census as a child of Lemuel Green. Their names are on page 9, in Cabin Point, along with other family members, including Joseph's brother Samuel. Both Lieut. Joseph M. Green and Samuel M. Green (Company G, 13th Va. Cav.) are recorded in B. W. Jones's Battle Roll of Surry County, Virginia, in the War Between the States...(Richmond, 1913).

UPDATE 3!   We have more information about both Joseph Green and Samuel Wilson, thanks to Robert (Bobby) Clarke. Bobby found both men in Jeffrey C. Weaver's 10th and 19th Battalions of Heavy Artillery.

Samuel Wilson is listed as served with the 19th Battalion and was severely WIA [wounded in action] in the leg which was amputated. Was taken POW [prisoner of war] on 4/6/1865. Graduate of VMI in 1858. Resident of Bacon's Castle, Surry County, Va. Postwar school principal. Died on 12/30/1913.

Joseph M. Green is listed in the 10th Battalion Co. D as 2nd Lt./ 1st Lt., Co. D. Enlisted 5/10/1861 at Brandon Church. Elected 2nd Lt. on 3/25/1862. Applied for a few days leave to visit his father in Surry County as he was very sick and not expected to live. Promoted to 1st Lt. on 11/13/1863. Detailed to search for deserters on 3/31/1863. Reported Company's strength in 9/1864 as (3) Lts. and 109 enlisted men. Paroled at Burkeville, Va. on 4/14-17/1865. Resident of Surry County. Born 3/10/1839. Died 1910. Buried in Mt. Hope Cemetery.

UPDATE 4!   We have more information about Joseph Green, thanks to Susan Greene Tillman. Susan is related to Joseph Green. She tells us that he died 28 August 1910 in Manhattan and is buried in Mt. Hope Cemetery in Brooklyn, NY.
