Newsletter and Meeting Notice May 1998.

May 1, 1998

Dear Friends,

The Surry County, Virginia Historical Society and Museums, Inc. is happy to announce its first annual meeting. It will be held on Monday, May 11, 1998 at the Surry County Recreation Center, Surry, Virginia at 7:00 P.M.

To bring you up to date, the Society voted to organize in November, 1997, organized on February 26, 1998 and held its first general meeting on April 6, 1998. As of today, the Society has over 125 members. This is a great beginning and we look forward to many other new members in the future as word of the new organization spreads. You can help with this. If you have names and addresses of Surry County citizens who are interested in the purpose of the Society and persons who may no longer live in the county, but are interested in its history, please let us know so they can be invited to join the organization. Also, you can simply pass along to them a copy of the application for membership included in this letter.

The agenda for the annual meeting includes the following items:
  • Election of officers and directors
  • Resolution to establish a bank account for the Society
  • Resolution to establish a web site for the Society
The nominating committee will present the following slate of officers and directors:

Officers for the 1998-2000 term
President: James E. Atkins
Vice President: Kenneth R. Holmes
Secretary: Barbara Hopper
Treasurer: Martha Rollings

Directors
Carol Andrews Amy Edwards Harte
Margaret Sue Berryman Claude Reeson
Lillie Fields W. E. Richardson, Jr
Mike Harrison Savannah H. Williams
Wallace Edwards Barbara Moore

In accordance with the bylaws, nominations may be made from the floor, provided the nominee has consented to serve if elected.

In addition to the agenda items listed in this notice, there will be a brief program on Chippokes by Catherine Correll, an update on recent activities on behalf of the Society and consideration of a Society booth at the Pork, Peanut and Pine Festival in July.

Margaret Sue Berryman

P.S. Copies of the Bylaws will be available at the annual meeting for all members who have not received them.
