Newsletter and Meeting Notice March 1998.

March 16, 1998

Dear Friends,

Our Historical Society is a reality. At an organizational meeting on Feburary 28, 1998, Articles of Incorporation and Bylaws were approved. The Society has Incorporated as a Nonprofit Corporation and we are now in business. The following temporary officers were elected to serve until our May, 1998 meeting when permanant officers and directors will be elected: President, Mrs. Margaret Sue Berryman; Vice President, Mr. Kenneth R. Holmes; Treasurer, Mr. S. Wallace Edwards; and Secretary, Mrs. Barbara Hopper.

You are cordially invited to become a part of this excitng new venture for our county. The first general meeting of the Historical Society will be held on Monday, April 6, 1998 at the Surry County Recreation Center at 7.00 P.M. We hope that you will join us as we begin to make plans to preserve and promote Surry County's long and rich history.

Some of the ideas and plans already under way or being considered include:
  1. Establishing an office, library and displays near the Surry Court House.
  2. Publishing historical works about all segments of our history.
  3. Involving youth in the Society's work and teaching them our county's history.
  4. Moving ahead in developing Museum sites throughout the county that highlight the rich history of life in Surry County over the past nearly 350 years. Initial efforts have already begun in Carsley where the Rogers Store and its extensive inventory of memorabilia and records have been made available to the Society through the generous gift by John Rogers, descendant of the original owner, Watt Rogers, and his mother, Becky Rogers.
In addition to this site, citizens of Dendron and Claremont are actively developing historical sites in these communities.

The Society is now accepting members and we hope you will want to be a part of this effort to preserve and promote the history of Surry County for future generations. A membership application is attached. We hope you will consider the highest level membership possible this year. We will begin to implement many new programs and your support is important to these efforts. You may return your application to the Surry Historical Society at the address shown on the application. We will also accept memberships at our meeting on April 6th.

The Surry County, Virginia Historical Society and Museums, Inc. has an active and far reaching agenda. We hope you will join us as a founding member, and work with other citizens and friends of Surry County to achieve the purposes and goals of the Society. We look forward to seeing you at this first general meeting. Please contact me at 757-294-3567 if you have questions about the Historical Society.

Sincerely,

Margaret S. Berryman
