Remember when nearly every housewife raised a big flock of turkeys? Sometimes a number of growers would sell their flocks to the local merchant. When he had as many as 200 he would get some "hands' To drive them on foot to Gate City from as far away as 15 or 20 miles.

Remember when there was quite a lot of "tree" sugar and "tree molasses" made in Scott County?Remember when nearly all Gate City would meet every passenger train at the depot?

Remember the old wooden bridge over the road just west of the present site of the Gate City post office?

Remember when there was a big pond where Kane Field is now located? Sports then were boating in the summer and skating in winter.

Remember w hen "Fly Brooms" were made from paper. Cut in strips and sewn to a reed stick, to scare the flies away from the table at meal time, and one member of the family would stand over the table and wave the "broom" back and forth while the others ate."

Remember when housewives wove their own carpets from strips of old rags. Those new carpets made of different colored fabrics were sometimes as pretty as striped candy!

Remember those "stir-offs' of cane molasses and "tree" syrup and sugar?

Remember the bolster, a long pillow extending all the way across the bed, usually placed under the regular pillows and under the sheets when making the bed?

Remember the lambrequin, a drapery suspended from the mantel or window casement?

Remember when mom heated an iron or brick, wrapped it in a cloth to place at your feet on a cold winter night?

Remember when mom would bake a half gallon crock of sausage instead of frying and canning it?

Remember when the first washing machines were propelled by hand?

Remember when every school teacher was supposed to "treat" every pupil at school closing before Christmas? The treat was usually striped sticks of candy.

Remember when people made metheglin? It was made by fermenting water sweetened with honey.

Remember the old salt gourd which hung near the stove in the kitchen?

Remember when women wore woolen scarfs called fascinators? Primarily fascinators were woven or crocheted head coverings for the fair sex. In real cold weather men would sometimes put on fascinators, stretch their hats over them and get going. It may be added that this added no attraction to either man or fascinator.

Remember when Virginia corn pone was sometimes called corn dodger?
