Lois Nadine (Bishop) Minton Edens

KINGSPORT - Lois Nadine (Minton) Edens, 67, went to be with the Lord on Thursday (Feb. 23, 2006) at Holston Valley Medical Center following a brief illness.

She was born in Kingsport where she had lived all her life.

Lois was preceded in death by her parents, Fonzie and Grace McGee Bishop; a sister, Dora Maxine Wallen; her first husband, Bert N. Minton; her second husband, Olen C. Edens; and her son, Frank Minton.

She is survived by her four sons, Nelson Minton of Kingsport, Robert Minton of Kingsport, Steve Minton and wife Derenda of Briggs, Tex., Tommy Minton of Kingsport; her two granddaughters, Samantha Minton and Jennifer Anita Conklin; a great-grandson, Isaac Minton; three sisters, Pauline Holmes of Marblehead, Ohio, Willivine Wallen and Madeline Lundy, both of Church Hill; special friend, Geneva Pickering along with several nieces and nephews.

Calling hours are from 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday at Carter-Trent Funeral Home, Kingsport.

Services will follow at 7 p.m. in the funeral home chapel.

Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Jones Cemetery, Church Hill.

Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Those wishing to attend the graveside service are asked to meet at the cemetery by 1:55 p.m.

George was the husband of Peggy Anne Lane who father was Herald Lane Sr. b. in Scott Co, VA.

EDENS, William G. Sr. age 80 of Butler Twp. went to be with the Lord on Thursday, September 23, 2004 at his residence after a sudden illness. He was born November 16, 1923 in Exeter, VA, son of the late Elbert Sr. and Beulah (McClellan) Edens. He was a retired Engineer with Frigidaire Div. of GM and was a proud Air Force and Army veteran of World War II . William was a member of the Celina Moose Lodge and a member of the VFW, American Legion and Amvets. Preceded in death by his wife, Peggy A. Edens in 2003, and 2 brothers, Elbert Edens Jr. and Joseph Edens, William is survived by 1 daughter, Teresa Pacura of Dayton; 1 son, William G. Jr. & wife, Lola Edens of Toledo; 4 grandchildren, Brad William Edens, Elizabeth, Naomi and Matthew Pacura; 1 sister, Wanda Leidig; 2 brothers-in-law, Harold Lane and Dr. Anthony Munoz; 2 sisters-in-law, Nancy & husband, John Clay and Dorothy Edens, and a host of other relatives and friends. The family will receive friends at the Morton & Whetstone Funeral Home, 139 S. Dixie Dr., Vandalia on Sunday, September 26 from 2 to 4 pm. Private graveside funeral service will be held at the convenience of the family at Forest Hills Cemetery.

GRAY -- John Edwards, 83, died Tuesday (Oct. 13, 1998) at his residence, 428 Buckingham Road, Gray, after a lengthy illness.
A native of Virginia, he was a son of the late William P. and Eliza Dee Tipton Edwards. He was a retired farmer.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Monnie Hall Edwards; a son Jerry W. Edwards; two sisters, Rosa Day and Ruth Kelly; and three brothers, Ross Edwards, Claude Edwards and Freelin Edwards.
Surviving are his wife, Lovely Hall Edwards, of the home; seven daughters, Annie Lee Ward, Weber City, Va., Barbara Roberts, Nancy Crawford, both of Jonesborough, Cecilia Hill, Johnson City, Joann Darnell, Fort Blackmore, Va., Margaret Ervin, Gate City, Va., and Judith Childress, Kingsport; eight sons, Jimmie Edwards, Greeneville, Pat Edwards, Limestone, Jackie Edwards, Mountain City, Scotty Edwards, Kingsport, J.W. He was born in Scott County, Va. March 10, 1940.

He was preceded in death by his father, Johnnie W. Edwards; and three sisters, Joan Darnell, Nancy Crawford and Judith Childress.

GRAY - Lovely June (Hall) Edwards, 83, passed away Saturday (Sept. 13, 2003) in the Greystone Health Care Center, Blountville, after a long illness.

She was a homemaker, a loving wife and mother, and was of the Baptist faith.

Mrs. Edwards was preceded in death by her husband, John W. Edwards; parents, Jack and Liza (Baker) Hall; daughters and husbands, JoAnn and Emmet Darnell, Judith and Lester Childress, and daughter, Nancy Crawford; sons, Johnny (Jay) W. Edwards Jr. and Jerry Wayne Edwards; grandchildren, Eugene Darnell and Miranda Shipley.

Survivors include her daughters and husbands, Annalee Ward of Gate City, Va., Margaret Erwin of Manville, Va., Barbara and Jessi Roberts of Jonesborough, and Cecilia and Fred Hill of Johnson City; sons and wives, Freddy Edwards of Gray, Scotty and Sandy Edwards of Greeneville, Billy Edwards of Johnson City, Delmar and Mary Edwards of Gray, Pat Edwards, Jimmy and Rhonda Edwards, and Jackie Edwards, all of Greeneville; special friends, Bonnie Edwards and Ella Sayre; 42 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and a host of friends.

Calling hours will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday in the Gray Funeral Home Chapel and also at the home, 428 Buckingham Rd., Gray.

Services will be conducted at 8 p.m. Tuesday in the funeral home chapel with Pastor Clarence Huffman and Larry Browder officiating.

Graveside services and burial will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the Hill Station Cemetery, Hill Station, Va. The family will meet at the cemetery.

Pallbearers will be grandsons and honorary pallbearers will be granddaughters.

Charlie Ralph Egan

CHUCKEY, Tenn. - Charlie R. Egan, 90, a resident of Ridgecrest Manor, Duffield, Va., formerly of Ft. Blackmore, Va., entered into rest Friday (Nov. 3, 2000) at Holston Valley Medical Center.

He was born on May 13, 1910 in Scott County, Va., and was the son of the late James H. and Sarah Taylor Egan.

He was a farmer and was of the Methodist faith.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Evie R. Egan; two daughters; one sister and three brothers.

Surviving are his daughter and son-in-law, Deloris Faye (George) Snipes, Midway, Tenn.; three sons and daughters-in-law, Ralph Edward (Juanita) Egan, Weber City, Va., Robert (Myrtle) Egan, Hilton, Ky., and Gene (Ida Mae) Egan, Chuckey, Tenn.; 12 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren and four step grandchildren; one brother and sister-in-law, Kinnely (Hattie) Egan, Kingsport; and several nieces and nephews.

Calling hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Gate City Funeral Home.

Services will be conducted at 8 p.m. today in the Gene Falin Memorial Chapel of the funeral home with the Rev. George Willis and the Rev. Coy Butler officiating.

Graveside services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Egan Cemetery, Midway community.

Charles Edward "Charlie Edgar" Ervin

Obituary from Kingsport Times-News for descendants of Scott Co Ancestors

GATE CITY — Charles Edward "Charlie Edgar" Ervin, 88, of Route 1, Manville, following an extended period of declining health, entered into rest, surrounded by his family, Friday (Nov. 7, 2008).

Charlie was born on Jan. 11, 1920 in Scott County, Va. He worked at the Kingsport Glass Plant and later owned and operated Ervin's Service Station for 27 years. After retirement from the service station, Charlie was able to enjoy his love of farming, fishing, walking with his long-time companion "Fiesty," being with family, and visiting friends and neighbors. He was a member of Alley's Chapel Church and until his failing health he attended faithfully.

He was preceeded in death by his loving wife of 52 years in 1997, Frances Marie (Queen) Ervin; his parents, Andy and Alba Penley Ervin; brothers and sisters, James Wrightly Ervin, Lorne Ervin, Olene McNew, Hulda Williams, Sarah Head, Alice Bellamy, Glad Ervin; and many dear friends and extended family loved ones.

Surviving are his daughter Charlene and husband, Ron Brickey whom he thought of as a son, Kingsport; his sons, Kenneth Ervin and wife, Audrey, Weber City, Va. and Harland Ervin and wife, Rosa Lee, Weber City, Va.; grandchildren, Josh Ervin, April Ervin, Beth Shepard and husband, Andrew, Timmy Hensley and wife, Tammy; and five great-grandchildren. In addition, he is survived by two sisters, Blanch Ervin and Clarice Million; and his brother-in-law, Fred H. McNew, who was like a brother to him; several nieces and nephews; and a host of friends and extended family.

Charlie's family wishes to thank the many friends and staff at the Brian Center for their kindness and compassionate loving care of their dear Dad.

Calling hours will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Colonial Funeral Home, Weber City, Va.

Services will be conducted at 7 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Bob Cloud officiating.

Music will be provided by Beth Shepard and friend.

GATE CITY, Va. - Georgia Mae Darnell Ervin , 63, Route 1, went to be with the Lord Tuesday (June 1, 1999) at her residence after a short illness.

Born in Scott County, Va., she was the daughter of the late George M. in 1978 and Callie M. Darnell in 1998. She retired from Arcata Graphics as a book picker. She had sung with the Ervin Trio and was a member of Alley Valley Freewill Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Larry Lee Darnell.

Surviving are her husband, Howard Ervin , Gate City, Va.; son and daughter-in-law, David and Deborah Ervin , Gate City, Va.; grandson, Calvin W. Williams Jr., Kingsport; great-granddaughter, Cassandra (Cassie) Williams, Kingsport; sisters, Shirley J. Lawson, Virginia K. Grizzle and Carolyn S. Frazier, all of Gate City, Va., and Kathy Ann Sexton, Yuma community; brothers, James Edward Darnell, Charles Fred Darnell, Hubert Dean Darnell, all of Gate City, Va., and Earl Monroe Darnell, Yuma community; and several nieces and nephews.

GATE CITY, Va. - Harry "Ray" Gilmer Ervin, 64, entered into rest on Saturday (Aug. 19, 2000) at his residence.

Mr. Ervin was born in Scott County, Va. on Feb. 17, 1936. He was of the Baptist faith.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Mae Musick Ervin, 1990; and his father, Lorn Lee Ervin, 1991.

Surviving are his wife, Peggy Lane Ervin, Gate City; sons and daughters-in-law, Steve and Jeanette Ervin, Kingsport, Jeff and Joyce Ervin, Lynchburg, Va.; son, Joshua Lee Ervin, of the home; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Lucille and Wrightly Rhoton, Patsy and Jack Carter, both of Gate City; three grandchildren, Todd Ervin, Michael Ervin and Nicole Ervin; one great-granddaughter; three nieces, one nephew and many friends.

GATE CITY, Va. - Maloy "Howard" Ervin, 71, of Route 1, Manville community, passed away Thursday (Dec. 2, 2004) at his residence.

He was born in Scott County on Nov. 17, 1933 and was the son of the late Wright and Monnie Musick Ervin. Mr. Ervin was of the Baptist faith.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Georgie Mae Darnell Ervin in June 1999; stepmother, Fannie Finch Ervin; sister, Ruth Qualls; and brother, Don Ervin.

Surviving are son and daughter-in-law, David and Debbie Casteel Ervin, Gate City, Va.; grandson and wife, Calvin and Amber Williams, Gate City, Va.; great-grandchildren, Karsyn, Tanner, and Cassie Williams; sisters and brothers-in-law, Wanda Edwards, Shirley and Jim Fields, Lorene and James Carter all of Gate City, Va; brother and sister-in-law, Bobby and Hazel Ervin, Gate City, Va.; special friends, Shirley Lawson, Charlie Ervin, Jack Carter, and Virginia Grizzle, all of Gate City, Va.; several nieces and nephews.

James M. Estep

GATE CITY, Va. — (Loving Father, Grandfather, and Friend), James M. Estep, 95, entered into rest with the Lord on Sunday afternoon (Jan. 13, 2008).

He was born in Scott County, Va. on Nov. 13, 1912.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Callie Poston Estep Christian and Henry Estep; his loving wife; Nettie Hammonds Estep; infant son, James Henry Estep; granddaughter, Trina Georgina Gibson; and great grandson, Dustin Estepp; sisters, Vesta Williams, July Tipton, Ester Speers and Gladys Darnell.

J.M. is survived by his children, Nora Wallace, Johnny and Dora Estepp, Lorine Harless, Virginia and Bill Davenport, Sue Gibson, Phyllis and Carlos Gibson, Terry and Leonard Davenport, Jackie Gillenwater and friend, Mike Ellis, Randy and Martha Estepp; two brothers, Ben Christian and Everet (Chris) Christian; one sister, Clayla Grogan.

He is also survived by 43 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; 18 great-great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Gate City Funeral Home and other times at the residence.

Services will be at 8 p.m. in the Gene Falin Memorial Chapel of the funeral home with Rev. Wrightly Salling and Rev. G.W. White officiating.

Music will be provided by family and friends.

Military gravesides services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Holston View Cemetery with military graveside rites conducted by the American Legion Post Hammond Post #265 and Gate City Post #3. The family will meet at 10:15 a.m. at the funeral home to go in procession to the cemetery.

Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

Doris Rachel (McDavid) Falin

GATE CITY, Va. — Doris Rachel McDavid Falin, 81, Nottingham community, entered into eternal rest Wednesday (Nov. 26, 2008) at Lonesome Pine Hospital after an extended illness.
She was born on Nov. 29, 1926 in Scott County, Va. to the late John Ingle and Leona McDavid.
She was preceded in death by a precious son, Glenn Falin; sisters, Elsie Herron and Mary Sue Kilbourne; three brothers, John L. McDavid and C.A. McDavid and Lewis L. McDavid and one half brother, Ira McDavid.
Doris was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was a wonderful friend to all who knew her.
Survivors include her husband of 63 years, Claude C. Falin, Gate City, Va.; a daughter and son-in-law, Teresa Stephenson and husband, Craig, Weber City, Va.; son and daughter-in-law, Larry Falin and wife, Midge, Gate City, Va.; one brother, Warren "Shawn" McDavid, Big Stone Gap, Va.; two granddaughters, Cindy Francisco and husband, Matthew and Rachel Olinger and fiancé, Danny Beasley; two great-grandchildren, Isabelle and Atticus Francisco; along with several nieces and nephews.

WEBER CITY, Va. — Pauline A. Fawbush, 79, passed away Thursday morning (Oct. 30, 2008) at Brian Center.

She was born in Scott County, Va., on Jan. 14, 1929, and was the daughter of the late Enoch Arrington and Maudie Bledsoe Arrington. She was a homemaker and was a member of Ida Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence Fawbush; sisters, Reba Pierson, Evelyn Bledsoe and Mabel Arrington; brother, Elmer Arrington; and an infant brother.

Funeral services will be conducted in the funeral home chapel at 7 p.m. Saturday with the Rev. Paul Blessing and the Rev. Richard Harris officiating.

Music will be provided by Salleys Chapel Quartet.

Graveside services will be Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Hensley Cemetery at Speers Ferry community. The family will meet at 12:15 p.m. at the funeral home to go in procession to the cemetery.

Alexander "Alex" Fields

KINGSPORT _ Alexander (Alex) Fields, 78, 1904 Diana Road, died peacefully in his sleep at his home Friday (May 26, 2000).

Born in Rogersville, he lived in Kingsport for many years and served with the U.S. Army during World War II. He was employed as an electrician with Eastman for 42 years.

Mr. Fields attended Walker's Fork Baptist Church and was also a member of Charles DeWitt Byrd Post No. 3382, VFW.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Ruth Hood Fields; and four brothers, Ralph Fields, Clifford Fields, Paul Fields and Cleo Fields.

Surviving are his wife, Loretta Skelton Fields, Kingsport; daughter, Jennifer (Judy) Baker, Kingsport; son, Greg Fields and wife, Mary Anne, Greeneville; stepdaughter, Judy Tunnell, Church Hill; and stepson, Johnny Skelton, Church Hill. Other survivors include six grandchildren, Lisa Long, Steffany Winegar, Charlotte Hite, Shane Fields, Luke Fields and Charlsie Fields; two stepgrandchildren, Tammy Flannagan and Angie Sewell; as well as eight great-grandchildren. Also surviving are sister, Beatrice McClain, Rogersville and two brothers, Jack Fields, Phoenix, Ariz., and Tide Fields, Rogersville.

Graveside services will be conducted at 3 p.m. today at East Lawn Memorial Park, with military rites conducted by the American Legion Hammond Post No. 3.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Walker's Fork Baptist Church building fund, 6441 Lone Star Road, Kingsport, Tenn. 37660.

Nannie Ruth Robinson Fields

DANTE, Va. — Nannie Ruth Fields, 83, died Monday (Nov. 3, 2008) at Russell County Medical Center, Lebanon, Va.

She was born in Nickelsville, Va., and was the daughter of the late McCoy and Maggie Hawkins Robinson Maxfield. She was of the Baptist faith.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John C. Fields; one sister, Betty Greer; and two brothers, Harold Robinson and Robert "Boozer" Robinson.

She is survived by four daughters, Wanda "Frog" Osborne and husband, Larry of Dante, Va., Debra "Butch" Jordan of Castlewood, Va., Teresa "Tiny" Mays and husband, Ronald of Castlewood, Va., and Rita Bradley and husband, Bill of Castlewood, Va.; two sons, Larry "Snake" Fields of Dante, Va. and Tim "Beaver" Fields and special friend, Nancy Honaker of Gray; four sisters, Doris Hall and Glenna Jones, both of Dante, Va., Judy Porter and husband, Harold of Castlewood, Va., and Joyce Greer of Castlewood, Va.; one brother, Eugene Maxfield and wife, Diane of Castlewood, Va.; 11 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

GATE CITY, Va. — Samuel David Fields, 61, went to be with the Lord Nov. 8, 2008 at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center.
Mr. Fields was born in Scott County, VA. on Aug. 3, 1947 to the late Thurman Fields, Sr. and Lydia Bowser Fields. Mr. Fields was previously employed at Kingsport Foundry.
Including his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Johnny Fields; sisters, Beulah Rollins, Evelyn Rose, Betty Fields and Ruth May Fields; one brother, Thurman Fields, Jr.
Survivors include a daughter, Brenda Fields; sons, Anthony Fields, Michael Fields, all of Kingsport, Pastor Scott Fields and wife, Pam of Gate City, Va., Greg and wife, Mary Alice Fields, Kingsport and Daniel Fields of Gate City, Va.; sisters, Mary Calton of Kingsport and Bobby Lampkins of Lebanon, Va.; brother, Carl Fields of Kingsport; 12 grandchildren; three greatgrandchildren; along with several nieces and nephews.

Grace (Derting) Fleenor

KINGSPORT - Grace Derting Fleenor, 91, died Tuesday (Nov. 28, 2000) at Hillside Manor.

She was born in Scott County, Va., and was the daughter of the late Walker and Peggy Derting, and moved to Bristol in 1984. She was the widow of W.M. "Dub" Fleenor and was a member of Beech Grove Primitive Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Maxie Reynolds.

Surviving are a daughter, Peggy Jenkins, Bluff City; two sons, Edsel Fleenor, Kingsport and Dan Fleenor, Hiltons, Va.; three grandchildren, Donna Stine, Dan Fleenor Jr., and Todd Pannell; three great-grandchildren, Dan Donald Fleenor III, Daniel Fleenor and Anthony Chase Pannell; two brothers, W.O. "Bud" Derting, Hiltons, Va., and Calvin Derting, Blountville.

Committal service and burial will be conducted at 11 a.m. today in the Fleenor Family Cemetery in Hiltons, Va.

Isaac Fletcher, 67, died unexpectedly at his home in Rye Cove Monday.

His survivors include his wife Mrs. Nannie Fletcher of Rye Cove; two sons Ken and Charlie Fletcher, both of Rye Cove; and two daughters; Mrs. Clara Lark, Fort Blackmore and Mrs. Myrtle Carter of Stanleytown.

Funeral services will be conducted by Huff Funeral Home and are to be held at the Stanleytown school Wednesday at 1:00 p. m. with the Rev. Stanley Boatwright officiating.

Burial will be in the Stanleytown Cemetery.

Beverly (Egan) Foster

ATLANTA, Ga. - Beverly Egan Foster, 67, died on Thursday (Sept. 22, 2005) at Nursecare of Buckhead, after a long and courageous struggle with Huntington's disease.

She was born in Kingsport and lived in Atlanta, Ga., most of her life. She was a former employee of Tennessee Eastman Company and an executive secretary at Union Carbide.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Bernice Taylor Egan and Fred Wayne Egan of Kingsport.

She is survived by her two children, Susan Taylor Foster Wright of Atlanta, and Carter Egan Foster of New York; her granddaughter, Ashley Taylor Wright, of Atlanta; her aunt, Ina Egan Parr of Asheville, N.C.; her cousins, Berkley Underwood of Concord, N.C., and Duane and Brian Egan of Kingsport; and numerous other relatives.

A memorial service will be held in the chapel of First Presbyterian Church of Atlanta, 1328 Peachtree St. NE, on Thursday at 11 a.m.

A reception for friends and family will follow the service.

Obituary from Kingsport Times-News for descendants of Scott Co Ancestors

DUFFIELD, Va. — Janet Anita Arrington Franklin, 50, of the Rye Cove community, went to be with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ quietly on Monday (Oct. 6, 2008) at her residence after a courageously fought battle with cancer.

Janet was born on Feb. 7, 1958 and had resided in the Duffield area all of her life. She graduated from Rye Cove High School in 1976. She married the love of her life, William (Bill) Franklin in 1979.

Janet worked at N.I. Industries, Mead Paper and Exide. She attended Thomas Village Baptist Church.

Janet was a faithful woman of God and was sure to spread the Lord’s light wherever she went. She loved cooking and entertaining friends and family. She enjoyed canning with her mother and sister, working in her flowers and taking walks with her dogs.

Her family was always her first priority. Janet was also an avid supporter of Rye Cove High School. She gave much of her time helping with the athletic Boosters Club. She had a passion for traveling with her husband and children and loved to be able to see God’s country. She was a woman of generosity and kindness, providing for others before herself. She was self-taught and self-made. She was a woman of independence, never waiting on anyone to do a job she could do herself.

She was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Echol Berry; paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. William Arrington; brother, Ernie Arrington; mother and father-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. William Franklin; and brother-in-law, Phillip Dishner.

She is survived by her loving and devoted husband of 29 years, Bill; two children who were the light of her life, daughter, Kelly Franklin Hood and husband, Jake and son, John Franklin; parents, Mr. Carson and Mrs. Virgie Berry Arrington of Duffield; sister, Carolyn Arrington Dishner of Duffield; sisters-in-law, Barbara Hass and Pat Ball, both of Rye Cove, Va.; seven nieces, Miranda Arrington Medlin of Kingsport, Crystal Arrington of Kingsport, Marla Nickles Schaaf of Bristol, Tenn., Dianna Dishner of Duffield, Rebecca Hass of Pennington Gap, Deborah Jernigan and Amy Erwin; four nephews, Jason Arrington of Brandon, Fla., James Hass of Duffield, Chris Ball of Duffield and Aaron Hass of Duffield; and a great-nephew, Kyler Medlin of Kingsport.

Funeral services will follow at 7 p.m. in the church with the Rev. Gary Edwards and Rev. Gary Hood officiating.

Music will be provided by the Thomas Village Baptist Church Choir.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the Mitchell-Franklin Family Cemetery in Duffield. Family and friends will meet at the funeral home at 10 a.m. to go in procession.

Creed & Willie Frazier

Thousands Attend Frazier Funeral

Victims of Shooting Affray are Buried in Same Grave Near Home of Creed Frazier; Confessed Slayer in Jail.

Attended by a throng estimated variously at between two to three thousand persons, testifying to the popularity of the two men and the interest that has been aroused over the killings, final rites for Creed and Willie Frazier, father and son, who met death at the hands of John Barnett, three miles west of Speers Ferry last Tuesday afternoon , were held Thursday afternoon at the home of Creed Frazier, near Daniel Boone Yard about four miles west of here. In separate coffins the body of the two men were lowered into the same grave on a hillside several hundred yards from the Frazier home.

The crowd at the funeral was considered the largest to ever attend a funeral in this section. Nearly 1,000 automobiles, forming a line approximately two miles long on either side of the road in the vicinity of the home. Many of the residents of the surrounding community came afoot. There were people throughout Scott, Lee and Wise Counties, Va., and Sullivan County Tenn.

In charge of the services were Rev. Jas Gilley of Bulls Gap, Tenn., Rev. J. B. Craft, of Gate City, Rev. C. L. Palmer and Rev. Horton.

The two caskets in which reposed the bodies of the two men were placed on the veranda of the Frazier home while the immense throng passed by and took final views of the victims of Barnett’s gun. Approximately and hour was required for the long line to pass by and still there were some who did not view the remains.

At the close of the services, the caskets were carried to the grave on the hill where they were interred.

Both caskets were blanked with a profusion of floral offerings, the final tributes of friends of the dead men.

Creed Frazier was 48 years of age. From 1920 to 1924, sheriff of Scott County, he had established a reputation as a fearless officer and respectable citizen. He leaves a widow and three sons, as follows: John Henry Frazier, 24 years of age, Roy Frazier, 21, Howard Frazier, 16, also six brothers and three sisters as follows: George M. Frazier, police sergeant at Kingsport; Mahon, Henry, James, John and Milo Frazier, Mrs. M. P. Carter, Mrs. Charles Sloan and Mrs. Clint Craft, all of this section.

Will Frazier was 26 years of age. He leaves a widow and five children, the eldest of which is six years.

Hill, Va. -- Funeral services for Andrew J. Freeman, who died suddenly of a heart attack at the home of Morgan Carter in Gate City Sunday, will be held Tuesday, 2:00 p. m. at Rivermont here. The Reverend A. J. Boatwright will officiate. Burial will follow in the Pendleton Cemetery.

DUFFIELD, Va. - Mrs. Gracie Ann Fritz, 88, died Monday evening (Nov. 27, 2000) at Ridgecrest Manor after an illness.

DUFFIELD, Va. - Leonard J. Fritz, 73, died early Saturday morning (June 19, 2004) at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center after a lengthy illness.

Born in Scott County, he was a son of the late Will and Gracie Lane Fritz and was a retired farmer.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a stepdaughter, Linda Carter; brothers, William, Robert and Nelson Fritz; sisters, Panzie and Hazel.

Gate City - Ray Fugate, 80, of Gate City, died Wednesday evening at HVCH after a lingering illness.

He was a retired rural mail carrier and attended the First Baptist Church of Gate City.

Survivors include his wife, Faye Fugate, Gate City; one son, Jim Ray Fugate, Gate City; three sisters, Miss Grace Fugate, Miss Elizabeth Fugate and Mrs. Robert (Lyde) Crawford, all of Kingsport; two brothers, C. H. Fugate, Greene Castle, Pa. and Slemp Fugate, Kingsport.
