Addie (Pridemore) Johnson Mrs.
Addie Pridemore Johnson, widow of the late C. C. Johnson, formerly of
Gate City, died at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Hubert A. Quillin, 125
East Sevier Street, at 11:30 a.m. Thursday. Mrs.
Johnson was the daughter of the late Captain Hiram D. Pridemore and
Susan Slemp Pridemore. She was a niece of the late General Aurburn L.
Pridemore of Jonesville, Va., and former Congressman Campbell C. Slemp,
Big Stone Gap, Va. Surviving
are two daughters, Mrs. Hubert A. Quillin and Mrs. J. O. Nidermaier; one
son, Charles F. Johnson, of Purchase, Va.; two sisters, Mrs. J. P.
Trent, Sr., of Farmerville, Va., and Mrs. W. J. Draper, of Big Stone
Gap, Va.; one brother, H. C. Pridemore, of 1009 Watauga Street; six
grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Funeral
services will be at the Walnut Street Methodist Church, Gate City, Va.,
Saturday at 2 p.m. with the Rev. French Taylor, pastor, officiating
assisted by the Rev. E. E. Wiley, pastor of the Broad Street Methodist
Church of Kingsport. The
body will remain at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Hubert A. Quillin until the
hour of service. Born in Scott County, Va., he served with the U.S. Army during World War II and lived in Kingsport until 1965. He was employed with the Kingsport Press for several years. Mr. Johnson lived in Maryland for several years, where he worked with Holiday-Tyler Printing Co. He attended Holston View United Methodist Church. A brother, Curtis Johnson and two sisters, Rita Baldwin and Phyllis McConnell preceded him in death. Surviving are his wife, Trula S. Johnson , Kingsport; two daughters and a son-in-law, Karen and Fred Easterling, Debbie Taylor, all of Frederick, Md.; four grandchildren, Kelly M. Oland, Keith T. Easterling, Steven L. Easterling and Kristy L. Taylor; one great-granddaughter, Breanna Taylor Oland; two sisters, Edna Pratt and Mary Davis, both of Kingsport; four brothers, Clyde Johnson , Church Hill, Ross Johnson , Kingsport, J.F. John David Johnson, Clearwater, Fla.; three sisters, Mrs. C. E.
Gillenwater, Meadowville, Va., Mrs. Lucille A. Hubble, Gate City, Va.,

He was the son of the late Olin Paul and Lillie Frazier Johnson. He was a native of Sullivan County and had lived in this area his entire life. He was a member of St. Luke United Methodist Church. He was owner and operator of Speedway Motors & Body Shop for 30 years. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Harold T. "Slick'' Johnson, Olin Paul Johnson Jr. and David S. Johnson. Surviving are his wife, Mary Hammond Johnson; daughter, Jennifer Johnson, Gray; foster daughter, Tracie Thomas, Johnson City; sister, Esther Brown (Bill), Fayetteville, Ga.; brother, J.B. "Cotton'' Johnson, Howard Johnson (Dean), Kenneth R. Johnson (Carol) and Joe V. Johnson (Brenda), all of Kingsport; and several nieces, nephews and great-nieces and nephews. Candice Elaine (Osborne) Johnson BLACKWATER, Va. — Candice Elaine Osborne Johnson, 28, departed this world Friday (March 6, 2009) in Kentucky as a result of a automobile accident. She was a member of Clear Springs Primitive Baptist Church in Ohio. She was mother of the late Kaden Boyd Johnson and was also preceded in death by her beloved uncle, Fred Robinette, on March 23, 2006. Johnson, 88, died on Friday, July 15, 2005 at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center following a lengthy illness. He was born in Clinchport, Va., and lived in Weber City, Va., Kingsport, Rockville, Md., and Mount Carmel. While in Kingsport, he was employed by Tennessee Eastman Company and the Kingsport Press, Inc. He retired from Faucet Publications in Rockville, Md. Mr. Johnson was a U.S. Navy veteran having served in a non-combat role during World War II. He was a member of the American Legion Post No. 3 and First Broad Street United Methodist Church. An enthusiastic baseball fan, he coached Connie Mack League youth baseball for several years in the early 1960's. He was an avid golfer and played regularly for 40 years. He was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Sylva McDavid Johnson; and his parents, Arthur L. and Eliza Johnson. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Eureta Baldwin and Phyllis McConnell; and brothers, Curtis Johnson, J.F. Johnson and Authur L. Johnson, Jr. Surviving are his sons and daughters-in-law, D. He was born on Aug. 31, 1920 in Blackwater, Va., and was the son of the late J. Emmett and Virgie Lawson Johnson. He was an Army veteran of World War II and was a retired employee of J.P. Stevens. He was a member and deacon of Friendship Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife, Edna Tyler Johnson of Whitmire; and a number of nieces and nephews. Kingsport Times-News Colonel Dawes Johnson BLACKWATER, Va. - Colonel Dawes Johnson was born on Feb. 3, 1929 and went home to be with Jesus Sunday (Nov. 2, 2003) at Ridgecrest Manor in Duffield, Va., at the age of 74 years, 8 months and 30 days. He was a lifelong resident of Blackwater and was a retired employee of the Robinette Store and Funeral Home where he was treated more like family than an employee for many years. He served in the U.S. Air Force for four years. He was saved and joined the Willis Chapel Church, then later moved his membership to Flower Gap Baptist Church where he remained a member for almost 40 years. He was a charter member of the Blackwater Men's Christian Fellowship. He would be the first to admit that he had made a lot of mistakes in his life and would encourage anyone not to follow the same paths of heartaches, but during his illness, he spoke of "about being ready to go to Heaven." Thank God His grace is sufficient to lead his lost lambs home when we go astray. He was preceded in death by his parents, Marion and Alwildia Hill Johnson; a son, Randy Johnson; four brothers, Melvin, Curtis, Coy and M.G. Johnson. Va. - Debbie (Ramey) Vanzant Johnson, 49, of Route 1, went to be with
the Lord Monday morning (April 3, 2006) as the result of injuries
sustained in a motor vehicle accident. She
was born Aug. 16, 1956, in Sullivan County and was of the Baptist faith.
She was employed in the housekeeping department of Indian Path Medical
Center. She
was a loving daughter, mother, grandmother and sister who will be sadly
missed by all. She
was preceded in death by her father, Ervin Ramey; and her husband, Gary
Vanzant. Ilene was born Feb. 15, 1934 and was a graduate of Shoemaker High School in 1951. She worked for the Scott County School System at Weber City Elementary School in the cafeteria. She participated with Mountain Empire Older Citizens. She was born on March 11, 1920, in Fairview, Va., to the late L. D. and Estella Horton Tyler. She was married to the late Coy C. Johnson. Mrs. Johnson retired from the J.P. Stevens Company and was a charter member of Friendship Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by one sister, Pauline Tyler Brock; and three brothers, Edgar Tyler, Robert (Bob) Tyler and Audney Tyler. Times-News Herman Lee Johnson SURGOINSVILLE - Herman Lee Johnson , 77, of 176 Dickerson Lane in Surgoinsville, went to be with Jesus early Thursday morning (July 7, 2005) at Bristol Hospice House following a courageous battle with lung cancer. He was a lifelong resident of Surgoinsville. Mr. Johnson was a veteran of World War II serving in the U.S. Army. He retired from Kingsport Mead Paper in 1989 with over 421/2 years of service. He belonged to the Clay Masonic Lodge #386 and had served as a Hawkins Co. Industrial Board member. Herman loved farming and to hunt deer and turkey. He especially loved his special cat, Shop - O. Mr. Herman Lee Johnson was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He was preceded in death by his son, Kevin Hoyt "Teny" Johnson in 1974; his parents, Mans and Irene Hickman Johnson ; his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Bill and Annie Dickerson; his brothers, Herbert Johnson and Drew Johnson ; his sister-in-law, Mary Johnson and his brothers-in-law, John Barton and Ace Dickerson. Times-News Jerry W. Johnson KINGSPORT - Jerry W. Johnson, 61, of Kingsport, went home to be with the Lord at 5:40 p.m. Friday (Jan. 20, 2006) at Indian Path Medical Center. Born in Kingsport on Aug. 1, 1944, a son of the late Dock E. and Erma Williams Johnson, he had resided in this area his entire life. Jerry married Betty Ann Browning on Aug. 4, 1970. He received two Purple Hearts while serving in the U.S. Army in Vietnam and was a member of the VFW and the DAV. Jerry retired in 1999 from Eastman Chemical Company following 30 years of service. He was a member of the Bloomingdale Ruritan Club. Jerry faithfully attended Good Shepherd Baptist Church. He will be remembered as a loving husband, father, brother and friend. City, Va. -- John Hopkins Johnson, 51, died at the Veterans' Facility in
Johnson City, Tenn., following a heart attack on Monday [1/10/1944] at 8
p.m. He had made his home
here for the past three years and was in declining health for several
months. He was a member of
the Baptist denomination. Mr.
Johnson was a native of Russell County, Va., and was the son of the late
James S. and Sarah Castle Johnson.
During World War I he served in the Thirty-Eighth Infantry of the
U.S. Regular Army and was overseas about 18 months. He
was a past commander of the Dewey Guy Post of the American Legion at
Middlesboro, Ky., where he made his home for 20 years before moving to
Gate City. Both while at
Middlesboro and here Mr. Johnson was widely known as a traveling
salesman. He was also quite
prominent in American Legion activities in Kentucky. Surviving
are his widow, Mrs. Audrey Pierson Johnson; two sons, Tommie and J. D.
Johnson; two daughters, Mrs. O. J. Reed, Jr., and Miss Mary Jane
Johnson, all of Gate City; and two sisters, Mrs. W. E. Bevins of
Jenkins, Ky., and Miss Myrtle Johnson of Gate City. Funeral
services will be conducted at the home in West Gate City Wednesday at 2
p.m. (EWT), with the Rev. C. J. Hawkins officiating.
Burial will be in Holston View Cemetery.

Martha (Bellamy) Johnson KINGSPORT — Martha B. Johnson passed away Thursday (April 30, 2009). Martha was a lifelong resident of Kingsport. She attended the public schools and was a graduate of Dobyns-Bennett High School, the University of Tennessee Junior College in Martin Tennessee and the University of Tennessee at Knoxville receiving a Bachelor of Science in Education. However, before she could pursue a career in teaching she joined Tennessee Eastman Company and was assigned to the analytical laboratory of the research laboratory where she was employed for several years. She resigned from Eastman in 1960 to become a full-time homemaker and mother. Martha loved books. Her personal library numbers more than a thousand hard back volumes and hundreds of paperbacks. For many years, she handled the memorials presented to the library of the First Baptist Church where she was a member of the Esther Sunday School Class. She also delivered books to the homebound for the Kingsport Public Library. An avid reader, books were one of her most relaxing and rewarding pastimes. She never lost her interest in education and was an active participant in the classes offered by the Kingsport Institute for Continued Learning and, at one time, served as president of that organization. Martha, in every respect, was a beautiful lady. She was preceded in death by her parents, A. L. (Pete) and Draxie Bellamy. She is survived by her husband, W. Lee Johnson; a son, David of Colfax, N.C.; and a daughter, Ellen of Kingsport. A private internment service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Oak Hill Memorial Park. was born in Swannanoa, North Carolina on August 24, 1928. She loved to
share her fond childhood memories of growing up in the Mill village
where she made many lifelong friendships. After marrying in 1952, she
moved to Scott County, VA, where she and her husband, H.T. Johnson began
there family. In later years they moved to Church Hill, TN. She attended
and was a member of Holston View United Methodist Church and was a
member of the “ladies” Sunday School class. She truly loved her
family and many friends. She is
preceded in death by her parents, James W. and Tommie L. Isley, and two

Nellie lived in Kingsport most all her life, but moved to Las Vegas in 2001. She was a graduate of Dobyns-Bennett High School and had worked at Eastman Chemical Company prior to going into banking. She retired from AmSouth Bank where she had worked for many years and was a longtime member of First Baptist Church. Nellie and her husband loved to travel, and they made many trips all over the world. They lived a rich and full life and will be missed. Preceding her in death were her husband, Claude in 1999; a daughter, Leslie Hillier; a sister, Ruth Gilliam; a brother, John Wesley Smith; and parents, Arthur and Gladys Smith. Thelma Sue "Susie" (Dickerson) Johnson SURGOINSVILLE — Thelma Sue (Susie) Johnson, 79, of Surgoinsville, passed over to Jesus’ arms at 9:10 p.m. Friday (Feb. 20, 2009) with all her family and friends by her side. Mrs. Johnson was saved on Aug. 18, 1974, and rededicated her life to Jesus on Dec. 3, 2007. She worked at Old Lyon’s Hospital in Rogersville, the Kingsport Laundry, and drove buses #9 and #48 for the Hawkins County School System and retired as a school bus driver in 1996 after 22 years of service. She loved to sew, crochet and travel. After retiring, she traveled to 42 of the 50 states in the United States. She visited Australia, Alaska, Canada, New Zealand and Hawaii and enjoyed going with her daughter, every Labor Day weekend, to the Hillsville, Va., flea market. She attended Fudge’s Chapel United Methodist Church. She was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother and loved all her kids. She was dearly loved by all who knew her and will be missed by her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She will miss seeing her granddaughter, Annie Russell, the first person in the family to graduate from college, this coming May. She was very proud of Annie deciding to become a school teacher. - Mr. Thomas Bruce Johnson Sr., 68, beloved husband, brother, father,
and granddad, entered into glory and eternal rest Tuesday (June 29,
2004). He died as he lived, laughing and sharing stories about his
family with someone he loved. He
loved his family deeply, protected each of them fiercely, and devoted
himself to all of them completely. He was happiest when surrounded by
family and friends who loved him -- and he was blessed with many. He was
the rock-solid foundation upon which we all leaned. He believed that
there is strength in family, power in prayer, and that there's no place
like home. Our
hearts are heavy and our grief cuts deeply, but we give thanks to have
been blessed with the love of this gentle man. We take comfort in
knowing that someday we will see him again -- in the presence of our
Lord. Mr.
Johnson was born in Bell County, Ky., on Oct. 16, 1935, a son of the
late John Hopkins and Audrey Pierson Johnson. He was
a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, serving proudly during the Korean
Conflict. In
addition to his parents, Mr. Johnson was preceded in death by his
sister, Sara Reed; infant brothers, Bobby and Troy Johnson; and a

Ancestors. CHURCH HILL - W. Clay Johnson, 86, went home to be with the Lord Tuesday evening (May 22, 2001) at his residence. He was born in Hancock County (Stoney Point), but had lived in Church Hill for the past 55 years. He had served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He had served 50 years as a member of the Masonic Lodge. He was past master of the Clay Masonic Lodge No. 688. He was a York Rite mason, Scottish Rite mason. He was also a Gideon. Mr. Johnson had also served as one of the first alderman for the City of Church Hill. He was retired from Tennessee Eastman, where he worked for over 44 years in the Fiber and Maintenance Division. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Church Hill, where he served as deacon, Sunday school teacher and trustee of the church. She was a licensed practical nurse at Holston Valley Community Hospital for 19 years prior to her illness and was the charge nurse of Wilcox Hall at the time of its opening and served in that capacity for several years. Ivan was born June 14, 1933, the third of six children, to Robert S. and Lovely M. Templeton Jones. He was raised in East Carters Valley and proudly served his country in the United States Army. He married Nora Matlock on Dec. 22, 1959. Ivan retired from AFG (Blue Ridge Plant) in June 1995 after more than 39 years of service. Life was an adventure to Ivan. Not a day went by that he did not live to its full potential. He loved to laugh. Travel, videography and sports were just some of his many hobbies. He loved children, and if there was a small child in the room, he or she would be Ivan’s buddy within minutes. He spent many hours with his nieces and nephews in their younger years, and they will each miss him greatly. He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Charles Edward Jones. "Cotton" Jones KINGSPORT — Doyle E. "Cotton" Jones, 69, passed away Sunday evening (Nov. 11, 2007) surrounded by family at his home following an extended illness. He was born in Pineola, N.C. on July 19, 1938 and was the son of the late M.H. (Marshal Henry) and Velma Key Jones. He spent his early years in Knoxville, Tenn., where he played football while attending Knoxville Gibbs High School. In his later teenage years the family moved to Kingsport where he spent the rest of his life. A racing enthusiast, he spent his time in the 60’s working as a "funny car" mechanic, for IHRA at the local drag strips and in his later years looked forward to NASCAR races. Cotton also loved, win or lose the Tennessee Volunteer and Gate City Blue Devil football programs where he watched his grandsons play. He worked for his dad building many of Kingsport’s bridges and roads also in his early years. A jack of all trades, he was also a carpenter, welder, electrician and a heavy equipment operator at coal mines in Virginia and West Virginia. He was preceded in death by his brother, Tommy Jones; and a half-sister Mary Lynn Hulin. Minnie (Smith) Jones Minnie "Nana" Jones, age 89, of Bristol, TN passed away at home on Wednesday, August 17, 2011 following a short illness. Mrs. Jones was a great wife, daughter, mother, sister, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, cousin, and friend. She was known as "Nana" to all that knew her. She was married to Robert E. Jones for 62 years and they lived and raised their daughters in the Carter’s Valley section of Kingsport. Nana was a Christian, read her Bible daily, and loved the Lord greatly. She spent her life showing Christian love to her family and those she came into contact with. She was a Sunday school teacher, Willing Workers president, and scout leader. She was a member of The Morrison City Mission for many years and most recently attended Steel Creek Missionary Baptist Church in Bristol, TN. Nana cared for many people inviting them into her home and sharing meals with them. She was known for her fried apple pies, red velvet cake, and almost everything else she cooked. She will be greatly missed but she did long to see her Lord and her husband, "Bob". She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Etta Smith; husband, Robert E. Before his illness, he was an evangelist for over 50 years, ministering in Scott County, Va., Hawkins, and Sullivan Counties. In his early ministry he walked to Bellamy Town and other churches. Only in his later years did he know the luxury of an automobile. Rev. Jones is survived by his wife, Nannie M. Jones, Gate City, Va.; two daughters and sons-in-law, Mrs. Nancy (Berl) Houseright, Kingsport, and Mrs. Charlotte (Billy) Bellamy, Gate City, Va.; one son and daughter-in-law, James and Patsy Carrico Jones, Gate City, Va.; three brothers, Kyle Jones, Gate City, Va., Robert Jones, Kingsport, and Banner Jones, Weber City, Va.; seven grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; and several nieces and nephews. Calling hours will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Gate City Funeral Home and other times at the residence in the Red Hill Community of Gate City, Va. Services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday in the Gene Falin Memorial Chapel of the funeral home with the Rev. Mac Sanders and the Rev. Jimmy Combs officiating. Music will be provided by the Upward Way Quartet. Burial will be in the Hammond Family Cemetery, Copper Ridge section of Scott County, following the service. Pallbearers will be James Jones, Steve Jones, Bill Smith, Danny Spivey, Kyle Jones Jr.; Christopher Hammonds, Jack France and Don Flanary. Tipton Jordan, 72, Kingsport, died at home Sunday, January 8, 2012,
after a battle with lung cancer. She was a homemaker who enjoyed making
quilts, housekeeping and meeting new people. Shirley was a devoted
Jehovah's Witness and a member of the Woodland Heights Congregation. She
was preceded in death by her parents, Kelly Tipton and Lillie Kinkead
Tipton; sister, Beulah Kinkead; brothers, Edward (Dock) Kinkead, Charles
Faye Tipton, Fred Leonard Tipton and Junior Lee Tipton. Shirley
is survived by her husband of over 50 years, John Jordan; daughters,
Teresa and husband, Jerry Begley, and Brenda Jordan; granddaughter,
Brianne Begley and husband Richie Wyckoff; grandsons, Andrew Begley,
Adam Jordan and Jordan Tate; sisters, Myrtle Ramey and Rhonda (Bo) Hall
; brothers, James Kelly Tipton, Willie Tipton; and many nieces and
nephews. The
family will receive friends on Thursday, January 12, 2012 from 5-7:00 pm

Kingsport, went to his eternal rest on Saturday (Jan. 3, 2009) at

Lane, a Union soldier, who moved from Greene Co, TN to Scott Co (Hiltons area) before 1890 and was there in the 1900 census. His son and June’s grandfather was Richard Isaac Layne who lived in Scott Co.. Difficult family to document) KINGSPORT - June Joyner, 73, went to her eternal rest on Sunday (Feb. 13, 2006) at Holston Valley Hospital after a lengthy illness. She was a member of Pleasant View Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, and one sister. Surviving are her husband, Don; son, Lewis; daughters, Barbara and Brenda; four brothers; one sister; and one grandchild, Daniel Joyner. Kingsport Times-News Leroy Joyner Sr. KINGSPORT — Leroy Joyner Sr., 79, passed away on Saturday (Oct. 11, 2008) at the Wexford House in Kingsport. He was born on May 4, 1929 in Scott County, Va. He was raised in the Daniel Boone area of Gate City. He was a veteran of the United States Army, having served in Germany during World War II. He returned to Gate City after his military service. He married Charlotte Harley on May 10, 1950. The couple lived in Kingsport, where they raised their 14 children. He was a retired brick mason, who through the years earned a reputation for his quality craftsmanship, a craft that he passed along to his nine sons. He and his sons assisted in building the first Habitat for Humanity house in Kingsport. After retiring he enjoyed fishing, woodworking and especially spending time with his granddaughter, Tara Leigh, assisting her with therapeutic horseback riding. He was a member of Way of Life Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his mother, Susie Rebecca Joyner on Oct. 11, 1993; his daughters-in-law, Alberta Joyner and Lisa Joyner; son-in-law, Sammy Stokes; and great-granddaughter, Emma Grace Joyner. He is survived by his wife, Charlotte; daughters, Carolyn Stokes, Mrs. Roger (Ruth) Clendenin, Mrs. Charles (Teresa) Thompson, Mrs. Jimmy (Sherry) Gilliam and Mrs. Wilburn (Judy) Gibson; sons, Leroy "Butch" Joyner, Jr., Jerry and wife, Donna, Steve and wife, Anita, Rick, Tony and wife, Pam, David and wife, Valerie, Mark and wife, LaShell, Rob and Jeff Joyner; sisters, Faye Gilliam and Nancy Carter; brother, Ed Joyner; 28 grandchildren; and 26 great-grandchildren; along with many nieces, nephews and friends. He is also survived by his Wexford House family that includes the staff, residents and their families. He was affectionately known as "Old Blue Eyes" and enjoyed sitting in the lobby drinking coffee with many of them. His life was made richer because of them. The family will receive friends on Tuesday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Way of Life Baptist Church, 319 Salvation Way in Kingsport. She was preceded in death by her maternal great-grandparents, Doc and Leona Clemons and Raymond and Bea Hamilton. Survivors in addition to the parents include two sisters, Pressley Justice and Cassidy Justice; one brother, Jared Qualls; paternal grandparents, Donald Justice and Gladys Justice; maternal grandparents, Larry and Betty Hamilton and Larry and Opal Hagood; special aunt, Lisa Grindstaff; two cousins, Bruce Estep and Ricky Estep; uncle, Billy Justice.
