Addie (Pridemore) Johnson

Mrs. Addie Pridemore Johnson, widow of the late C. C. Johnson, formerly of Gate City, died at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Hubert A. Quillin, 125 East Sevier Street, at 11:30 a.m. Thursday.

Mrs. Johnson was the daughter of the late Captain Hiram D. Pridemore and Susan Slemp Pridemore. She was a niece of the late General Aurburn L. Pridemore of Jonesville, Va., and former Congressman Campbell C. Slemp, Big Stone Gap, Va.

Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Hubert A. Quillin and Mrs. J. O. Nidermaier; one son, Charles F. Johnson, of Purchase, Va.; two sisters, Mrs. J. P. Trent, Sr., of Farmerville, Va., and Mrs. W. J. Draper, of Big Stone Gap, Va.; one brother, H. C. Pridemore, of 1009 Watauga Street; six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at the Walnut Street Methodist Church, Gate City, Va., Saturday at 2 p.m. with the Rev. French Taylor, pastor, officiating assisted by the Rev. E. E. Wiley, pastor of the Broad Street Methodist Church of Kingsport.

The body will remain at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Hubert A. Quillin until the hour of service.

Arthur Lee Johnson Jr.

KINGSPORT - Arthur Lee Johnson Jr., 75, died at 12:45 a.m. Friday (June 11, 1999) at Holston Valley Medical Center.

Born in Scott County, Va., he served with the U.S. Army during World War II and lived in Kingsport until 1965. He was employed with the Kingsport Press for several years. Mr. Johnson lived in Maryland for several years, where he worked with Holiday-Tyler Printing Co. He attended Holston View United Methodist Church.

A brother, Curtis Johnson and two sisters, Rita Baldwin and Phyllis McConnell preceded him in death.

Surviving are his wife, Trula S. Johnson , Kingsport; two daughters and a son-in-law, Karen and Fred Easterling, Debbie Taylor, all of Frederick, Md.; four grandchildren, Kelly M. Oland, Keith T. Easterling, Steven L. Easterling and Kristy L. Taylor; one great-granddaughter, Breanna Taylor Oland; two sisters, Edna Pratt and Mary Davis, both of Kingsport; four brothers, Clyde Johnson , Church Hill, Ross Johnson , Kingsport, J.F. Johnson , Newport News, Va., and H.T. Johnson , Church Hill.

Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. today at Holston View United Methodist Church, Weber City, Va., with the Rev. Richard Howard officiating.

Interment will be in Holston View Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to Holston View United Methodist Church, Weber City, Va. 24290.

Audrey (Pierson) Johnson

GATE CITY, Va. — Mrs. Audrey Pierson Johnson, 78, of Gate City, Va. died at her residence early Friday morning [9/12/1975] following a brief illness.

A lifelong resident of Scott County, she was a member of the Gate City United Methodist Church.

Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Jake McArthur, Gate City, Va., and Mrs. O. J. Reed, Jr., Kingsport; two sons, Thomas B. Johnson, Kingsport, and John David Johnson, Clearwater, Fla.; three sisters, Mrs. C. E. Gillenwater, Meadowville, Va., Mrs. Lucille A. Hubble, Gate City, Va., and Mrs. G. L. King, Weber City, Va.; one brother, Hugh Kyle Pierson, New Smyrna Beach, Fla.: eight grandchildren: and six great-grandchildren.

Gate City Funeral Home is in charge.

Bill Gene "Red'' Johnson

GRAY - Bill G. "Red'' Johnson, 58, died Friday (Oct. 19, 2001) at Holston Valley Medical Center.

He was the son of the late Olin Paul and Lillie Frazier Johnson. He was a native of Sullivan County and had lived in this area his entire life. He was a member of St. Luke United Methodist Church.

He was owner and operator of Speedway Motors & Body Shop for 30 years.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Harold T. "Slick'' Johnson, Olin Paul Johnson Jr. and David S. Johnson.

Surviving are his wife, Mary Hammond Johnson; daughter, Jennifer Johnson, Gray; foster daughter, Tracie Thomas, Johnson City; sister, Esther Brown (Bill), Fayetteville, Ga.; brother, J.B. "Cotton'' Johnson, Howard Johnson (Dean), Kenneth R. Johnson (Carol) and Joe V. Johnson (Brenda), all of Kingsport; and several nieces, nephews and great-nieces and nephews.

Calling hours are from 4 to 6 p.m. today at St. Luke United Methodist Church. The family will also be receiving friends at the home anytime.

Memorial services will be conducted at 6 p.m. today at the church with the Rev. Mike Teague and the Rev. Wayne Baker officiating.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Luke United Methodist Church.

Calvin C. Johnson

KINGSPORT - Calvin C. Johnson passed away Tuesday (April 9, 2002) at Wexford House.

He was born in Scott County, Va., on March 13, 1924 and lived most of his life in Kingsport. He retired from Frank's Food.

Mr. Johnson was of the Methodist faith.

He was preceded in death by his father, G.M. Johnson Sr.; mother, Helen Ketron Johnson; daughter, Chris Rose; sister, Pauline Ketron; three brothers, Lawrence, Donald and O.M. Johnson.

Surviving are his loving wife of 52 years, June Parks Johnson; daughter, Judy and husband Tim King of Northwood, Ohio; son, Chuck and wife Connie Johnson of Kingsport; six granddaughters, Kelley, Lori, Shannon, Lena, Krystle and Tiffany; five great-grandchildren; two brothers, G.M. Johnson Jr. and wife Edna, Denver and wife Helen; three sisters-in-law, Doranna Johnson, Sue Ella Bright and Marie McCray.

Calling hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Oak Hill Funeral Home.

Clara D. “Pat” (Whittemore) Johnson

PEORIA, Ill – Mrs. Clara D. “Pat” Johnson, 60, Chillicothe, Ill., died at 4:55 p.m. Thursday ( May 2, 1991 ) at her residence.

Born in Kingsport , she had been employed at Caterpillar in Peoria , Ill. , for eight years.

She was preceded in death by her father, Fred Whittemore, and one brother.

Surviving are her husband, Isaac H. Johnson, Chillicothe; one son, Gordon P. Johnson, Anaheim, Calif.; one daughter, Mrs. Craig (Vicki) Vogel, Woodridge, Ill.; four grandchildren; her mother, Goldie D. Whittemore, Kingsport; one sister, Mrs. Don (Imogene) Myers, Kingsport; four brothers, R. C. Whittemore, Jim Whittemore, Paul Whittemore and Rand Whittemore, all of Kingsport.

Calling hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Wilton Mortuary, Peoria , Ill.

Services will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Monday at Wilton Mortuary with the Rev. David Swain officiating.

Candice Elaine (Osborne) Johnson

BLACKWATER, Va. — Candice Elaine Osborne Johnson, 28, departed this world Friday (March 6, 2009) in Kentucky as a result of a automobile accident.

She was a member of Clear Springs Primitive Baptist Church in Ohio.

She was mother of the late Kaden Boyd Johnson and was also preceded in death by her beloved uncle, Fred Robinette, on March 23, 2006.

Candice is survived by sons, Christian Johnson and Logan Bruner; mother, Donna Robinette and father, Boyd Osborne; sisters, Angela Helen Rannells and Emma Lee Kiser; brother, Triston Robinette; stepmother, Brenda Osborne; stepfather, Kevin Kiser; father, Jeff Burgan; grandfather, Joe Robinette; grandmother, Emma Jean Robinette; Uncle Kyle and Uncle Parmer; Aunt Naomi Adkins; Uncle Elder Jason Robinette; Aunt Joanne; Uncle Mike Longacre; and a host of cousins.

The family will receive friends 6 to 8 p.m. today at Robinette Funeral Home in Blackwater, Va.

Refreshments will be served at the Blackwater Fire Hall before and after the viewing.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday in the funeral home chapel with Elder Harmon Willis, Elder Greg Hill and Elder Joe Pitzer officiating.

A graveside service will follow at the Robinette Cemetery, Flag Pond, with Elder Roger Vanhoose and Elder David Vanhoose officiating.

Clyde Bascom Johnson

KINGSPORT - Clyde B. Johnson, 88, died on Friday, July 15, 2005 at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center following a lengthy illness.

He was born in Clinchport, Va., and lived in Weber City, Va., Kingsport, Rockville, Md., and Mount Carmel. While in Kingsport, he was employed by Tennessee Eastman Company and the Kingsport Press, Inc. He retired from Faucet Publications in Rockville, Md.

Mr. Johnson was a U.S. Navy veteran having served in a non-combat role during World War II. He was a member of the American Legion Post No. 3 and First Broad Street United Methodist Church.

An enthusiastic baseball fan, he coached Connie Mack League youth baseball for several years in the early 1960's. He was an avid golfer and played regularly for 40 years.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Sylva McDavid Johnson; and his parents, Arthur L. and Eliza Johnson. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Eureta Baldwin and Phyllis McConnell; and brothers, Curtis Johnson, J.F. Johnson and Authur L. Johnson, Jr.

Surviving are his sons and daughters-in-law, D. Lynn and Barbara Johnson, Kingsport, and Phil M. and Marilu Johnson, Ind.; four grandchildren, Beth Johnson, Centreville, Va., Brooke Johnson Gentry, Atlanta, Ga., Emily Johnson Lenihan, Ind. and Brian Johnson, Atlanta, Ga.; and great-granddaughter, Bailey Gentry, Atlanta, Ga. He is also survived by two sisters, Edna Pratt and Mary Davis; and two brothers, Ross Johnson and Hirma Thomas (H.T.) Johnson, all of Kingsport.

Family and friends wishing to view may do so 30 minutes prior to services Sunday at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Homes, Kingsport.

Services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home with Rev. Jack P. Weikel officiating. Friends will be received at the funeral home following the service.

Entombment services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Monday at Oak Hill Mausoleum.

The family wishes to thank the Church Hill Health Care employees for their loving care and concern for Mr. Johnson for more than eight years.

Coy C. Johnson

WHITMIRE, S.C. — Coy C. Johnson, 87, of 1606 Emory St., Whitmire, S.C., died Tuesday (Feb. 26, 2008) at his residence.

He was born on Aug. 31, 1920 in Blackwater, Va., and was the son of the late J. Emmett and Virgie Lawson Johnson. He was an Army veteran of World War II and was a retired employee of J.P. Stevens.

He was a member and deacon of Friendship Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Edna Tyler Johnson of Whitmire; and a number of nieces and nephews.

The family will be at his residence and will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Friendship Baptist Church.

Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Friday at the church by the Rev. Brice Castle and Rev. Horace Weathers.

Interment will be in the Whitmire Cemetery with military honors.

Colonel Dawes Johnson

BLACKWATER, Va. - Colonel Dawes Johnson was born on Feb. 3, 1929 and went home to be with Jesus Sunday (Nov. 2, 2003) at Ridgecrest Manor in Duffield, Va., at the age of 74 years, 8 months and 30 days.

He was a lifelong resident of Blackwater and was a retired employee of the Robinette Store and Funeral Home where he was treated more like family than an employee for many years. He served in the U.S. Air Force for four years.

He was saved and joined the Willis Chapel Church, then later moved his membership to Flower Gap Baptist Church where he remained a member for almost 40 years. He was a charter member of the Blackwater Men's Christian Fellowship.

He would be the first to admit that he had made a lot of mistakes in his life and would encourage anyone not to follow the same paths of heartaches, but during his illness, he spoke of "about being ready to go to Heaven." Thank God His grace is sufficient to lead his lost lambs home when we go astray.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Marion and Alwildia Hill Johnson; a son, Randy Johnson; four brothers, Melvin, Curtis, Coy and M.G. Johnson.

Survivors include three sisters, Laura Sullivan, Maxine Belcher and Yvonne Johnson; one brother, A.J. Johnson; a host of nieces, nephews and friends.

Calling hours will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Robinette Funeral Home, Blackwater, Va.

Services will be conducted at 8 p.m. today in the funeral home with Elder Walter Willis and Elder Gordon Justice officiating.

Music will be provided by the Flower Gap Singers.

Committal graveside services will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday in the Oak Hill Cemetery, Kingsport.

Debbie (Ramey) Vanzant Johnson

HILTONS, Va. - Debbie (Ramey) Vanzant Johnson, 49, of Route 1, went to be with the Lord Monday morning (April 3, 2006) as the result of injuries sustained in a motor vehicle accident.

She was born Aug. 16, 1956, in Sullivan County and was of the Baptist faith. She was employed in the housekeeping department of Indian Path Medical Center.

She was a loving daughter, mother, grandmother and sister who will be sadly missed by all.

She was preceded in death by her father, Ervin Ramey; and her husband, Gary Vanzant.

Dorothy Ilene (Williams) Johnson

WEBER CITY, Va. - Dorothy (Ilene) Johnson, 72, passed away Thursday (Sept. 21, 2006) at Holston Valley Medical Center.

Ilene was born Feb. 15, 1934 and was a graduate of Shoemaker High School in 1951. She worked for the Scott County School System at Weber City Elementary School in the cafeteria. She participated with Mountain Empire Older Citizens.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Monroe and Elma Williams; son, Tommy Lynn Johnson; infant sister, Judith Ann Williams; and one brother, Hansel Williams.

Surviving are her husband of 55 years, Russell K. "Tommy" Johnson; three daughters, Sue Fletcher and husband Tim, Nickelsville, Va., Christy Johnson, Weber City, Va., and Mitzi Owens and husband Phil, Hiltons, Va.; three grandchildren, Tyler Fletcher, Samuel and Emily Owens; two sisters, Frances "Frank" Sluss and husband David, Church Hill, and twin sister, Jean Kaylor, Church Hill; two sisters-in-law, Mildred Rasnick, Snowflake, and Erma Bray, Kingsport; brother and sister-in-law, Rudolph and Bertie Johnson, Surgoinsville; special aunt and uncle, Ewell and June Hammonds, Kingsport; special friend and caregiver, Robin Sexton; several nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends.

Edna (Tyler) Johnson

WHITMIRE, S.C. — Edna Tyler Johnson, 88, of 1606 Emory St., Whitmire, died Tuesday (Feb. 17, 2009) at the Newberry County Memorial Hospital.

She was born on March 11, 1920, in Fairview, Va., to the late L. D. and Estella Horton Tyler. She was married to the late Coy C. Johnson.

Mrs. Johnson retired from the J.P. Stevens Company and was a charter member of Friendship Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by one sister, Pauline Tyler Brock; and three brothers, Edgar Tyler, Robert (Bob) Tyler and Audney Tyler.

She is survived by her sister, Cleo England of Williamston, S.C.; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Saturday at Friendship Baptist Church by the Rev. Ray Belue and the Rev. Brice Castle officiating.

The body will be placed in the church at 10 a.m. Saturday for viewing.

The family will receive friends and relatives at the church from 1 to 2 p.m. and again at the cemetery following the interment service.

Interment will be in Whitmire Cemetery.

Erma (Williams) Johnson

KINGSPORT - Erma Williams Johnson, 85, went to be with the Lord Monday (April 15, 2002) in Holston Valley Medical Center after a period of declining health.

Erma was born August 18, 1916 in Scott County, Va., a daughter of the late Will and Bertha Fritz Williams. She was married to the late Dock E. Johnson, who passed away August 2, 1986.

She was a loving mother.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by two sons, Jimmy and Howard Johnson; sister, Gladys Harper; and brother, John Williams.

Survivors include her daughters, Peggy McCory and Linda Owens, both of South Carolina; sons, Charles, Richard, Jerry and Joseph Allen Johnson, all of Kingsport, and Fred Johnson of South Carolina; brothers, Homer, Williams of Florida, R.C. Williams of Pennsylvania, Clarence and Don Williams, both of Kingsport; 15 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Calling hours will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the East Lawn Funeral Home and anytime at the residence.

Services will be conducted at 8 p.m. Thursday in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Wrightly Salling and the Rev. Jack Sturgill officiating.

George Augustus "G.A." Johnson

FT. BLACKMORE, Va. - George Augustus (G.A.) Johnson, 66, died Thursday (June 15, 2000) due to a tractor accident.

He was born in Scott County, Va. on July 13, 1933 and was a lifelong resident of Ft. Blackmore, Va. He was a graduate of Dungannon High School. He loved farming and was employed by the United States Postal Service for 40 years, having served as Postmaster of Ft. Blackmore, Va. since 1967. He was a veteran of the United States Army.

Golden Mitchell Johnson Jr.

KINGSPORT — Golden M. Johnson Jr., 86, passed away Sunday (Dec. 14, 2008) at Indian Path Medical Center after an extended illness.
He was born Jan. 2, 1922, to Golden M. Johnson Sr. and Helen Ketron Johnson. He retired from Johnson-Hilliard, Inc. and also owned a construction company. Golden was a person who never shied away from hard work.
He was a combat veteran of World War II having served as infantryman in the U.S. Army.
He fought in numerous campaigns across Europe including The Battle of the Bulge. Golden was proud of speaking to General Patton several times. He was a member of Kingsport Masonic Temple.
Preceding him in death were his first wife, Ruth Mullins Johnson; his son, James Leon Johnson; and his second wife, Lucille Jackson Johnson.
Surviving are his three daughters, Donna Mildred Zarlengo and husband, Don of Struthers, Ohio, Phyllis A. Morrell of Boardman, Ohio, Lucy Brickey and husband, Will of Tampa, Fla.; four sons, Mitchell Johnson and wife, Jeretta, Randy Johnson, Ronnie Johnson, Jason Johnson and wife, Lisa, all of Kingsport; 18 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and one brother, Denver Johnson of Kingsport.
The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Homes, Kingsport.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Hermon United Methodist Church with Rev. Shannon Powers, Rev. Herman Lee Johnson

SURGOINSVILLE - Herman Lee Johnson , 77, of 176 Dickerson Lane in Surgoinsville, went to be with Jesus early Thursday morning (July 7, 2005) at Bristol Hospice House following a courageous battle with lung cancer.

He was a lifelong resident of Surgoinsville. Mr. Johnson was a veteran of World War II serving in the U.S. Army. He retired from Kingsport Mead Paper in 1989 with over 421/2 years of service. He belonged to the Clay Masonic Lodge #386 and had served as a Hawkins Co. Industrial Board member. Herman loved farming and to hunt deer and turkey. He especially loved his special cat, Shop - O.

Mr. Herman Lee Johnson was a loving husband, father and grandfather.

He was preceded in death by his son, Kevin Hoyt "Teny" Johnson in 1974; his parents, Mans and Irene Hickman Johnson ; his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Bill and Annie Dickerson; his brothers, Herbert Johnson and Drew Johnson ; his sister-in-law, Mary Johnson and his brothers-in-law, John Barton and Ace Dickerson.

Herman Johnson is survived by his loving wife, who would have been married for 52 years on July 18th, Thelma Susie (Dickerson) Johnson of the home; his three sons, Dickie Johnson and wife, Louise, Jeff Johnson and wife, Melissa, both of Surgoinsville, Danny Evans and wife Shelia of Church Hill; his daughter, Vanessa ( Johnson ) Russell and husband, Clifford of Surgoinsville; nine grandchildren, Nicole Johnson Roberts and husband Michael, Kelly Johnson , Lisa Johnson , Aaron Russell, Annie Russell, Tyler Johnson , Toby Johnson , Megan Johnson and Dusty Evans; he was expecting his first great-grandchild in January; a daughter-in-law, Angela Kindle; a brother, Jim Johnson of Church Hill; five sister-in-laws, Mamie Barton, Beulah Dickerson, Marie Johnson , Bunny Johnson and Bernice Housewright; along with several nieces and nephews.

Isaac H. Johnson, 88, 880 Summersville Road, Kingsport, died at 3:30 p.m. Saturday ( Aug. 10, 1991 ) at his residence after a long illness.

He was a member of the Kendricks Creek United Methodist Church , and a member of the Kingsport Life Saving Crew.  He was retired from the Tennessee Eastman Company, Tenite Dept.

He was the son of the late Hessie Carr and Isabelle Tomlinson Johnson.

Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Sylvia Lane Johnson, Kingsport; two daughters, Mrs. Nina Blevins, Peoria, Ill., and Mrs. Mary Arnold, East Peoria, Ill.; one son, Isaac H. Johnson, Chillicothe, Ill.; six grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and one sister, Mrs. Helen Gibbons, Jackson, Miss.; several nieces and nephews.

DUFFIELD, Va. — Jeffrey "JJ" Johnson, Sr., 49, passed away Wednesday (March 26, 2008) at his residence.

He was born in Baltimore, Md. on Nov. 20, 1958. He had previously been employed as a truck driver for Norton Greenhouse. Mr. Johnson attended Weber City Church of God.

He was preceded in death by his maternal and paternal grandparents; and his mother-in-law.

Surviving are his wife, Karen Hall Johnson, of the home; daughters, Rebecca Scalf and husband, Joshua, Weber City, Va., and Jennifer Brown and husband, Dennis, Glen Arm, Md.; son, Jeffrey "JD" Johnson, Jr., of the home; parents, James E. and Mary Wells Johnson, Kingsport; grandchildren, Jeannette Brown and Priscilla Brown of Glen Arm, Md., Cody Scalf, Weber City, Va.; brothers, James Randy Johnson and wife, Susan, Aberdean, Md., and Gary E. Jerry W. Johnson

KINGSPORT - Jerry W. Johnson, 61, of Kingsport, went home to be with the Lord at 5:40 p.m. Friday (Jan. 20, 2006) at Indian Path Medical Center.

Born in Kingsport on Aug. 1, 1944, a son of the late Dock E. and Erma Williams Johnson, he had resided in this area his entire life. Jerry married Betty Ann Browning on Aug. 4, 1970.

He received two Purple Hearts while serving in the U.S. Army in Vietnam and was a member of the VFW and the DAV.

Jerry retired in 1999 from Eastman Chemical Company following 30 years of service.

He was a member of the Bloomingdale Ruritan Club. Jerry faithfully attended Good Shepherd Baptist Church.

He will be remembered as a loving husband, father, brother and friend.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to the Good Samaritans who were at the Ketron Track who rendered help and assistance in his time of need.

In addition to his parents, Jerry was preceded in death by two brothers, Edward Johnson and Jimmy Johnson.

He is survived by his devoted wife of 35 years, Betty Ann Browning Johnson of the home; a son, Matthew Jerry Johnson of Kingsport; two sisters, Peggy McCrory and husband Farrell, and Linda Owens and husband L.D., all of Anderson, S.C.; four brothers, Charles Johnson and wife, Flora of Kingsport, Fred Johnson and wife, Priscilla of Mount Carmel, Richard Johnson and wife, Ginger of Kingsport, and Joseph Allen Johnson and wife, Cathy of Blountville; several nieces and nephews; special friends, the Leach Family and friends and special friends at Hardee's.

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - John F. Johnson, 75, formerly of Weber City, Va., died Monday (Jan. 22, 2001) at Riverside Regional Medical Center in Newport News, Va.

He was a Navy veteran of World War II and an Army veteran of the Korean War.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur and Eliza Johnson; sisters, Rita Baldwin and Phyllis McConnell; brothers, Curtis and Authur L. Jr.

John Hopkins Johnson

Gate City, Va. -- John Hopkins Johnson, 51, died at the Veterans' Facility in Johnson City, Tenn., following a heart attack on Monday [1/10/1944] at 8 p.m.  He had made his home here for the past three years and was in declining health for several months.  He was a member of the Baptist denomination.

Mr. Johnson was a native of Russell County, Va., and was the son of the late James S. and Sarah Castle Johnson.  During World War I he served in the Thirty-Eighth Infantry of the U.S. Regular Army and was overseas about 18 months.

He was a past commander of the Dewey Guy Post of the American Legion at Middlesboro, Ky., where he made his home for 20 years before moving to Gate City.  Both while at Middlesboro and here Mr. Johnson was widely known as a traveling salesman.  He was also quite prominent in American Legion activities in Kentucky.

Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Audrey Pierson Johnson; two sons, Tommie and J. D. Johnson; two daughters, Mrs. O. J. Reed, Jr., and Miss Mary Jane Johnson, all of Gate City; and two sisters, Mrs. W. E. Bevins of Jenkins, Ky., and Miss Myrtle Johnson of Gate City.

Funeral services will be conducted at the home in West Gate City Wednesday at 2 p.m. (EWT), with the Rev. C. J. Hawkins officiating.  Burial will be in Holston View Cemetery.  Services at the grave will be conducted by the Gate City Post of the American Legion.

MOUNT CARMEL — Joseph Johnson, 29, originally from Mount Carmel, passed away Monday from injuries sustained from an automobile accident.

Joe, a resident of Knoxville, Tenn., was an active participant in the local performance arts community including the Salome Cabaret, and the revival of the Rocky Horror Picture Show at the Fairbanks. He was the manager of HateSickLive and an avid supporter of the local music scene as well as a spoken word performer.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Joseph Homer Cox and Inez Jean Cox; paternal grandparents, Elmer and Susie Johnson.

Kenneth Carson Johnson, 30, Route 11, Kingsport, died at 4:45 a.m. Wednesday [ 12/5/1963 ] at Holston Valley Community Hospital after a lingering illness.

He was an employee of Tennessee Eastman Company and was a member of the Fordtown Baptist. Church.

Mrs. Lillie Arnold Johnson, 74, 2209 Oasis Lane, died at 5 p.m. Thursday [11/8/1973] at her home after a long illness.

Born in Lee County, Va., she had lived in Kingsport for 60 years. She was a member of the Reservoir Road Baptist Church.

Marcella F. (Darnell) Johnson

Marcella D. Johnson, 81, of Roanoke, passed away Tuesday, November 28, 2006. She was born in Scott County , Virginia and was the daughter of the late Denny F. Darnell and Dora M. Starnes Darnell. Her brother, Sam Darnell also preceded her in death. Marcella graduated from the Jefferson School of Nursing as Valedictorian and spent her life as a nurse at Catawba Hospital and retired from the V.A. Medical Center in Salem . Surviving are a daughter, Teresa J. Johnson of Catawba; a son, Steven M. Johnson and his wife, Robin of Richmond; two brothers, Randall Darnell of Gate City, Sidney Darnell of Kingsport, Tennessee; sister, Joan Darnell Honeycutt of Roanoke; several nieces; a nephew; and a close friend, Nancy Shumate. Marcella dearly loved the outdoors and her granddogs, Winston, Gracie, Grizzly, and Jax. A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, December 1, 2006 at Oakey's North Chapel with the Rev. Martha (Bellamy) Johnson

KINGSPORT — Martha B. Johnson passed away Thursday (April 30, 2009).

Martha was a lifelong resident of Kingsport. She attended the public schools and was a graduate of Dobyns-Bennett High School, the University of Tennessee Junior College in Martin Tennessee and the University of Tennessee at Knoxville receiving a Bachelor of Science in Education.

However, before she could pursue a career in teaching she joined Tennessee Eastman Company and was assigned to the analytical laboratory of the research laboratory where she was employed for several years. She resigned from Eastman in 1960 to become a full-time homemaker and mother.

Martha loved books. Her personal library numbers more than a thousand hard back volumes and hundreds of paperbacks. For many years, she handled the memorials presented to the library of the First Baptist Church where she was a member of the Esther Sunday School Class. She also delivered books to the homebound for the Kingsport Public Library. An avid reader, books were one of her most relaxing and rewarding pastimes. She never lost her interest in education and was an active participant in the classes offered by the Kingsport Institute for Continued Learning and, at one time, served as president of that organization. Martha, in every respect, was a beautiful lady.

She was preceded in death by her parents, A. L. (Pete) and Draxie Bellamy.

She is survived by her husband, W. Lee Johnson; a son, David of Colfax, N.C.; and a daughter, Ellen of Kingsport.  A private internment service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Oak Hill Memorial Park.

A memorial service will follow at the First Baptist Church, Kingsport at 2 p.m. with Dr. Marvin Cameron and Dr. Ron Davis officiating.

The family will meet friends immediately after the service in the church parlor.

The family would like to thank the staff of Baysmont Health Center for the wonderful care and attention provided Martha during her illness.

She was born in Scott County, Va. (Speers Ferry) and came to Kingsport in 1942. She was a homemaker. Mrs. Johnson was a member of the Fairview Chapter No. 80, Order of the Eastern Star.

She was a member of First Baptist Church of Church Hill where she loved the people so much especially the Young at Heart Group. Mary loved to garden and sew.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 57 years in 2001, W. Clay Johnson; a son, Michael Johnson; her parents, Robert E. and Ida Palmer Hawkins; sisters, Nell Hawkins and Frances Hawkins; a step-grandaughter, Angie Pitts.

Mary H. Johnson is survived by her daughter, Dixie Gilliam (Kingsport); her sons, William Clay (Bill) Johnson, Jr. (Church Hill), Robert K. (Bob) Johnson and his wife, Debby (Jackson, Miss.); her grandchildren, Heather Young and husband, Bill, Jon Gilliam, Rebekah Gilliam, Clay Johnson and Nicholas Johnson; a step-grandson, Jeff Pitts and wife, Amber; step-granddaughter, Summer Cleek; a great-granddaughter, Sara Young; her step great-granddaughter, Malison Young; a sister-in-law, Kate Jarvis; her special friends, Dinah Lawson, Peggy Larkin and Laura Salling (all of Church Hill); along with several special nieces and nephews.

A visitation will be held on from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. today at Carter-Trent Funeral Home of Church Hill.

A funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m. today in the funeral home chapel with Pastor Gary Gerhardt officiating.

A graveside service will follow the funeral at Oak Hill Cemetery on Friday with Bill Johnson, Bob Johnson, Jon Gilliam Linc Jarvis, Press Trent, Joe Eaton and Ralph Trent serving as pallbearers.

Honorary pallbearers will be Jack Jarvis, Steve Barrett and Maynard Hawkins.

Mary Esther (Hammond) Johnson

GRAY — Mary Hammond Johnson, 68, of Gray, passed away Wednesday (Dec. 31, 2008) at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center.

Originally a native of Gate City, Va., Mrs. Johnson had resided in Gray for the past 40 years. She was born Oct. 4, 1940, to the late Albert Harvey Hammond and Lillie Mable Ramey Hammond. She was retired from Holston Valley Medical Center.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Johnson was preceded in death by her husband, Bill "Red" Johnson.

Survivors include two daughters, Jennifer Johnson (Gray), and Gina Kilgore (Indianapolis, Ind.); three sisters, Eula Pendleton and husband Olin (Kingsport), Daisy Glenn and husband Troy (Nickelsville, Va.), Mrs. Ned Sutherland (Kingsport); two brothers, Albert Jackson Hammond and wife Sandra (Gate City), and Roy Hammond (Weber City); two grandchildren, Lillie Harper (Gray), and Quentin Kilgore (Indianapolis, Ind.).

Mrs. Johnson’s family will receive friends on Sunday (Jan. 4, 2009) from 2 to 4 p.m. at St. Luke’s United Methodist Church (Kingsport).

A memorial service will be conducted following the visitation. Rev. Steve Burkhart and Rev. April Milligan will be officiating the services for Mrs. Johnson.

Meredith (Isley) Johnson

CHURCH HILL -  Meredith Isley Johnson, 83, passed away peacefully on Wednesday (January 11, 2012).

Meredith was born in Swannanoa, North Carolina on August 24, 1928. She loved to share her fond childhood memories of growing up in the Mill village where she made many lifelong friendships. After marrying in 1952, she moved to Scott County, VA, where she and her husband, H.T. Johnson began there family. In later years they moved to Church Hill, TN. She attended and was a member of Holston View United Methodist Church and was a member of the “ladies” Sunday School class. She truly loved her family and many friends.

She is preceded in death by her parents, James W. and Tommie L. Isley, and two brothers, Jim Isley and Stan Isley.

Meredith is survived by her beloved and devoted husband of 60 years, H.T. Johnson and by three daughters and sons-in-law, Gail Leonard and husband, Alex of Clarksville, TN, Kay Gibson and husband, Pete of Jeffersonville, IN, and Cecilia Bowen and husband, Jason of Kingsport, TN, five grandchildren, four great grandchildren, and a very special friend, Kylene Stapleton.

KINGSPORT - Nancy J. Owens Johnson, 78, of 1225 E. Sevier Ave., passed away Sunday (Aug. 1, 2004) at Brookhaven Manor Health Care Center.

She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother, who "doted" on her grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Grayton Owens and Maxie May Darnell Owens; four brothers, Carter, Charles, Canary and Echol Owens; and two sisters, Gladys Owens and Fay King.

Surviving are her husband, Andrew J. Johnson of the home; a son, Ronald Wayne Johnson and wife, Wanda of Kingsport; three grandchildren, Christina Johnson, Julie Gilliam and husband, Jerry, and Miranda Manning and husband, Patrick; a great-grandson, Bryson Gilliam; one sister, Novella Amos of Baileyton; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Nellie Vivian (Smith) Johnson

KINGSPORT - Nellie Vivian Johnson, born in Kingsport in 1923 to Arthur and Gladys Smith, died Friday (Feb. 23, 2007), in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Nellie lived in Kingsport most all her life, but moved to Las Vegas in 2001. She was a graduate of Dobyns-Bennett High School and had worked at Eastman Chemical Company prior to going into banking.

She retired from AmSouth Bank where she had worked for many years and was a longtime member of First Baptist Church. Nellie and her husband loved to travel, and they made many trips all over the world. They lived a rich and full life and will be missed.

Preceding her in death were her husband, Claude in 1999; a daughter, Leslie Hillier; a sister, Ruth Gilliam; a brother, John Wesley Smith; and parents, Arthur and Gladys Smith.

Surviving are her son, Scott Johnson, who lives in Las Vegas with his wife, Margaret; and their two children, Tyler and Anna; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Mildred and Buster Rutledge and Mabel Jennings, all of Kingsport; a brother, A.M. Smith Jr., Kingsport; and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends Saturday from 11 a.m. to 12 noon at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Homes, Kingsport.

Services will be conducted at 12 noon at the funeral home with Dr. Ron Davis officiating.

Pansy (Gillenwater) Johnson

KINGSPORT — Pansy Gillenwater Johnson, age 82, of Kingsport, passed away Friday (Jan. 16, 2009) at Wexford House.

The daughter of Logan and Nancy Gillenwater, she grew up in Scott County, Va., and graduated from Dungannon High School. She left the next day for Washington, D.C., where she worked for Chesapeake & Potomac Telephone Co. until her marriage to S. O. Johnson, Jr. They lived in St. Paul, Va., and later moved with their son, David, to Kingsport.

Pansy was an active member of Colonial Heights Presbyterian Church, where she was involved with the "Trashy Ladies" fundraising group, Habitat Newsletter, and cookbook committees. She also served as a church librarian and secretary/treasurer of the Sunday School in past years. She worked in the office at Anderson Ford for many years, retiring in 1988.

She was preceded in death by her husband, S. O. Johnson, Jr.; brothers, Ross Gillenwater, Lee Gillenwater, and Kyle Gillenwater; and sister Charlie Mae Osborne.

She is survived by a son, David Johnson and wife Nancy, of Kingsport; and grandchildren Jennifer and Logan Johnson; sister Gladys Stapleton, Chesapeake, Va., Patsy Sawyer, Clintwood, Va. and Barbara Collins, Kingsport; brothers, Bill Gillenwater, Coeburn, Va., and Jack Gillenwater, Kingsport; and many nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends on Sunday from 1 to 2 p.m. at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Home, Kingsport.

MOUNT CARMEL - Priscilla F. Johnson, 67, of Mount Carmel went home to meet the Lord on Monday (July 16, 2007) at Wellmont Hospice House in Bristol, Tenn.

She was born May 5, 1940 in Dante, Va. the daughter of the late Charles and Jossie (Ring) Flanary.

Priscilla was a loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother who loved spending time with her family. Previously she was active at Vereness Baptist Church in Anderson, S.C. and recently attended Oak Grove Baptist Church in Mount Carmel.

Survivors include her loving husband of 45 years, Fred Johnson; two sons, Warren Johnson and his wife, Rhonda, and Mark Johnson and his wife, Dina; five grandchildren, Christopher, Justin, Christan, Hagan and Brooke Johnson; one brother Leon Flanary and his wife, Patty; one sister Susan Flanary; and two nephews, Krey and Kevin Flanary.

Visitation will be held on Thursday from 5 to 7 p.m. at East Lawn Funeral Home.

Services will be on Thursday at 7 p.m. in East Lawn Funeral Home Chapel.

Richard A. “Dick” Johnson

LITTLE SWITZERLAND, N.C. — Richard A. Johnson, 76, was born in Abingdon, Va. on March 15, 1932 and went to be with the Lord on Aug. 14, 2008 at St. Joseph Mission Hospital in Asheville, N.C.

He was a graduate of Shoemaker High School in Gate City, Va., a veteran of the Korean Conflict and was owner/operator of Blue Ridge Gem Mines in Little Switzerland, N.C.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Nancy Shell Johnson; his parents, Thomas A. Johnson and Mary E. Johnson Compton; and his sister, Joanne J. Flanary.

He is survived by his daughters, Teresa Lanstra and husband, Jim of Hendersonville, N.C., Connie Overbay and husband, Michael of Ovilla, Tex.; three granddaughters; one grandson and two great-grandchildren; his brother, William (Bill) J. Johnson and wife, Lotis of Kingsport; a sister, Mary J. Bateman and husband, Stanley of Gate City, Va.; and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service, a celebration of life, will be held at the Gate City United Methodist Church in Gate City , Va. , on Aug. 16, 2008 at 3 p.m. with the Rev. Dale Wyrick and the Rev. Steve Brown officiating.

A private burial will be held at Holston View Cemetery in Weber City following the memorial service.

DUFFIELD, Va. - Rosie Bell Lawson Johnson , 78, entered into rest on Thursday (March 30, 2000) at Holston Valley Medical Center after an extended illness.

She was born April 12, 1921 in Scott County, Va. She was a daughter of the late John Wesley and Sarah Bowen Lawson.

Including her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Robert P. Johnson in 1989; two sisters, Mae Hall and Reba Barnett; five brothers, Bill, Echol, Worley, Frank and Emmett Lawson. She was a homemaker and of the Baptist faith.

Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Robert (Rosa) Rhoton, Clinchport, Va., Mrs. James (Teresa) Waddell, Union Bridge, Md., and Ms. Betty Mack, Kingsport; one sister, Callie Pannell, Kingsport; three grandchildren, Loretta Cobb, Elizabeth Lyons and Robert Mack; two great-grandchildren, C.J. Hamilton and Joseph Mack; two step grandchildren, Lenny Rhoton, Linda Gotts; two step great-grandchildren, Josh and Chris Lyons; special friend, Carolyn Ball and son, David; and several nieces and nephews.

MT. CARMEL -- Sylva McDavid Johnson, 79, died Thursday (May 7, 1998) at her home.

A native of Scott County, Va., she lived in Kingsport, Rockville, Md., and Mt. Carmel. While in Kingsport, she was employed by the Kingsport Recreation Department and retired from Vitro, Inc. in Rockville, Md.

She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and First Broad Street United Methodist Church.

She was the daughter of the late Robert Lawrence and Brownie McDavid.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Ralph McDavid.

Surviving are her husband, Clyde B. Johnson, Mt. Carmel; two sons and daughters-in-law, D. Lynn and Barbara Johnson, Herndon, Va., and Phil M. and Marilu Johnson, Huntsville, Ala.; and four grandchildren, Beth Johnson, Greenville, S.C., Brooke Johnson, Knoxville, Emily Johnson and Brian Johnson, Huntsville, Ala.

She was employed by Kingston Center , Duffield , Va.

Thelma Sue "Susie" (Dickerson) Johnson

SURGOINSVILLE — Thelma Sue (Susie) Johnson, 79, of Surgoinsville, passed over to Jesus’ arms at 9:10 p.m. Friday (Feb. 20, 2009) with all her family and friends by her side.

Mrs. Johnson was saved on Aug. 18, 1974, and rededicated her life to Jesus on Dec. 3, 2007.

She worked at Old Lyon’s Hospital in Rogersville, the Kingsport Laundry, and drove buses #9 and #48 for the Hawkins County School System and retired as a school bus driver in 1996 after 22 years of service.

She loved to sew, crochet and travel. After retiring, she traveled to 42 of the 50 states in the United States. She visited Australia, Alaska, Canada, New Zealand and Hawaii and enjoyed going with her daughter, every Labor Day weekend, to the Hillsville, Va., flea market.

She attended Fudge’s Chapel United Methodist Church.

She was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother and loved all her kids. She was dearly loved by all who knew her and will be missed by her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She will miss seeing her granddaughter, Annie Russell, the first person in the family to graduate from college, this coming May. She was very proud of Annie deciding to become a school teacher.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, Herman Johnson in July 2005; son, Kevin Hoyt (Teny) Johnson in June 1974; her mother and father, Bill and Annie Dunham Dickerson; brother, Acie Dickerson; sister, Mamie (Sis) Barton; her father-in-law and mother-in-law, Mans and Irene Johnson; brothers-in-law, Herbert, Drew and Jim Johnson and John Barton; nephew, Jackie Barton; stepson, Danny Evans and her best friend and traveling buddy, Betty Henderson.

Surviving are her son, Dickie Johnson and wife, Louise; daughter, Vanessa Russell and husband, Clifford; and son, Jeff Johnson and wife, Melissa, all of Surgoinsville; grandchildren, Nicole Roberts, Aaron and Annie Russell, Tyler and Toby Johnson, Kelly and Lisa Johnson, Megan Johnson and Morgan Shaffer; and stepgrandson, Dusty Evans; great-grandchildren, Maxwell Derrick, Natalie, Russell and Audrey Case and Azarah Roberts; special daughters-in-law, Angie Johnson and Shelia Evans; sister-in-law, Beulah (Sit) Dickerson. Mrs. Johnson was expecting her sixth great-grandchild this coming August.

Thomas Bruce Johnson Sr.

KINGSPORT - Mr. Thomas Bruce Johnson Sr., 68, beloved husband, brother, father, and granddad, entered into glory and eternal rest Tuesday (June 29, 2004). He died as he lived, laughing and sharing stories about his family with someone he loved.

He loved his family deeply, protected each of them fiercely, and devoted himself to all of them completely. He was happiest when surrounded by family and friends who loved him -- and he was blessed with many.

He was the rock-solid foundation upon which we all leaned. He believed that there is strength in family, power in prayer, and that there's no place like home.

Our hearts are heavy and our grief cuts deeply, but we give thanks to have been blessed with the love of this gentle man. We take comfort in knowing that someday we will see him again -- in the presence of our Lord.

Mr. Johnson was born in Bell County, Ky., on Oct. 16, 1935, a son of the late John Hopkins and Audrey Pierson Johnson.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, serving proudly during the Korean Conflict.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Johnson was preceded in death by his sister, Sara Reed; infant brothers, Bobby and Troy Johnson; and a great-niece, Karen McArthur.

Surviving are his wife, Nancy Moen Johnson, Kingsport; daughters and sons-in-law, Terry and Mickey Joe Osborne, Gate City, Va., Pamela and Joel Jones, Gate City, Va.; a son, Thomas B. CHURCH HILL - W. Clay Johnson, 86, went home to be with the Lord Tuesday evening (May 22, 2001) at his residence.

He was born in Hancock County (Stoney Point), but had lived in Church Hill for the past 55 years. He had served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

He had served 50 years as a member of the Masonic Lodge. He was past master of the Clay Masonic Lodge No. 688. He was a York Rite mason, Scottish Rite mason. He was also a Gideon.

Mr. Johnson had also served as one of the first alderman for the City of Church Hill. He was retired from Tennessee Eastman, where he worked for over 44 years in the Fiber and Maintenance Division.

He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Church Hill, where he served as deacon, Sunday school teacher and trustee of the church.

He was preceded in death by his son, Michael Johnson; his parents, Ephriam F. and Minnie Jarvis Johnson; three half sisters, Ellen Martin, Leafy Cook and Bessie Burton; two half brothers, Alp Johnson and Cass Trent; along with two dear friends, Harrison Taylor and James (Jim) Lawson.

Surviving are his loving wife of 57 years, Mary Ellen (Hawkins) Johnson, of the home; one daughter, Dixie Gilliam, Kingsport; two sons, William Clay (Bill) Johnson Jr., Church Hill and Robert K. (Bob) Johnson and his wife, Debby, Jackson, Miss.; five grandchildren, Heather Gilliam, Jon Gilliam, Rebekah Gilliam, Clay Johnson and Nicholas Johnson; one sister, Mrs. Kate Jarvis, Mount Carmel; along with several nieces and nephews.

A military graveside service will be conducted at 10 a.m. today at Oak Hill Cemetery by Church Hill VFW Post No. 9754.

Pallbearers will be John Gilliam, Jack Jarvis, Press Trent, Ralph Trent, Raymond Burton, Linc Jarvis, Steve Barrett and James Quillen.

Honorary pallbearers will be Clay Johnson, Nicholas Johnson, Hugh Johnson, Dr. Michael Bogan, Dr. T.H. Roberson, Dr. Joe Smiddy, Rodney Lane and Maurice Williams.

Terry Lee Johnston

Terry Lee Johnston, age 54, of Kingsport passed away on Wednesday, November 09, 2011 at Wellmont Hospice House of Bristol.

Terry loved Nascar, U.T. Football, gardening and fishing. He was a sweet and very well liked person. He attended Lynn View High School. He was employed by Quebecor for over thirty years and also worked for Exide and Eastman Chemical.

Terry is preceded in death by his father, Tommy Johnston; and his grandparents, Hugh Kyle and Gertrude Wolfe.

He is survived by his wife, Patricia Johnston; son, Troy Johnston of Kingsport; mother, Barbara Johnston of Kingsport; and the love of his life, his granddaughter, Kaylynn Johnston of Kingsport; three sisters, Dawn Way and husband Jack of Indiana, Pamela Johnston of Kingsport and Cheryl Williams and husband Gary of Kingsport; brother, Michael Johnston of North Carolina, and several nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, November 12, 2011 from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM in the J. Wayne Hamilton Memorial Chapel of Oak Hill Funeral Home. Funeral services will follow.

Annie "Vula" (Hale) Jones

KINGSPORT — Annie "Vula" Hale Jones, 89, of Kingsport, went to be with the Lord on Saturday (Feb. 28, 2009) at Brookhaven Manor in Kingsport.

She was born in Dickenson County, Va. and lived in Kingsport since she was 9 year old. She worked as a young girl for her sister in Owens Beauty Shop, one of the first shops in Kingsport. In her youth she attended the Salvation Army Church and later attended the Church of the Lord Jesus Christ on West View Park, for a number of years. She has now been a member of Apostolic Lighthouse for over 50 years.

"Vula" is preceded in death by her husband, Clarence Jones; son, John Thomas Jones; her parents, William D. and Mary Dingus Hale; four sisters, Trina Owens, Nannie Hale, Myra McCoy and Nell Collins; four brothers, Dennis Hale, Edwin Hale, Erwin Hale and Victor Hale; and a great-grandson, Preston McMillan.

Survivors include her three daughters, Anna Ruth Boggs and husband, John of Kingsport, Romelda McMillan of Kingsport and Rose Southerland and husband, Charles of Blountville; son, E. Allen Jones and wife, Sue of Hiltons, Va.; daughter-in-law, Shirley Jones of Kingsport; 16 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at the Apostolic Lighthouse Church, 145 Shipp Springs Road, Kingsport.

Bertha Lou (Head) Jones

CLINCHPORT -- Bertha Lou Head Jones, 88, Route. 2, departed this life Sunday afternoon (June 11, 2000) at Indian Path Medical Center.

She was a native of Scott County, a homemaker and a member of Grit Hill Methodist Church.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Betty Lou Jones; parents, General and Martha Benton Head; three brothers and one sister.

Surviving are her husband, Jessee Lee Jones, Clinchport, Va.; two nieces and two nephews.

Calling hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Scott County Funeral Home.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Garry Hood officiating.

Bette S. (Derrick) Jones

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. — Mrs. Bette S. Jones, 77, died Friday ( July 17, 2009 ) of COPD.

Born in Kingsport on Aug. 25, 1931 , she came to Winter Haven in 1972. She was of the Baptist faith and served as a youth minister.

She worked at Winter Haven Hospital in the ICU back in the 1970s. She was also a nurse for Dr. Arthuro Perez.

Mrs. Jones was preceded in death by her husband, Garland C. Jones; daughter, Angelon Jones; parents, Virgil and Genetta Derrick; and brother, Jack E. Derrick.

She is survived by two sons, Rory L. Jones and Landon S. Jones; brother, Wayne Derrick; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren.

Memorial services will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Steele’s Family Funeral Services, Winter Haven , Fla.

KINGSPORT — Beulah (Boobie) M. Jones, 76, of Kingsport, passed away at her home unexpectedly on Monday (Oct. 6, 2008.

She enjoyed working outside, reading and flowers, but her greatest joy was spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was of the Christian faith. She worked at Tennessee Eastman for 33 years. She worked in the Yarn Plant and retired from the guard force, leaving many good friends and co-workers.

She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Osta Murphy; her husband, Lester A Jones, in 1995; brother, Eugene Murphy; sister, Inez Hobbs; and nephew, William Murphy.

She is survived by her son, David Jones and wife, Debbie of Kingsport; daughter, Glenda Baines of Kingsport; four grandchildren, Mark Williams and wife, Sharon of Gate City, Va., Beth Lane and husband, Freddie of Church Hill, Jason D. Jones and wife, Buffy of Weber City, Va., Jennifer Wilkerson and husband, Jason of Mount Carmel; nine great-grandchildren, Kayla McClure and husband, Josh, Amber Weatherly, Allison Lawson, Hunter Lawson, Alyssa Williams, Ashley Jones, Austin Jones, Mercedes Fink and Joshua Wilkerson; brother, John Murphy, Jr. of Kingsport; 26 nieces, nephews and cousins that live in various parts of the country.

Visitation will be held on Thursday from 5 to 7 p.m. in the J. Wayne Hamilton Memorial Chapel of Oak Hill Funeral Home.

Beulah (Roach) Jones

Mrs. Beulah R. Jones of 318 West Ravine Rd. died at 2 p.m. Saturday [11/3/1973] at Memorial Hospital in Johnson City after a brief illness.

Born in Scott County, Va., she had lived in Kingsport since 1925. She was a licensed practical nurse at Holston Valley Community Hospital for 19 years prior to her illness and was the charge nurse of Wilcox Hall at the time of its opening and served in that capacity for several years.

She was a member of the Tennessee Licensed Practical Nurses' Association and was past president of the Kingsport area association.

She was a member of Lynn Garden Baptist Church.

Survivors include a son, Hal Jones of Kingsport; sisters Mrs. Nora Miller of Johnson City and Mrs. Maggie Bishop, Kingsport; brothers Blaine and Robert Bishop, both of Kingsport; Charles Roach, Jonesboro, and William Roach, Clinchport, Va.; and two grandchildren.

Bobby "Ivan" Jones

CHURCH HILL — Bobby "Ivan" Jones, 75, Church Hill, went to be with the Lord Tuesday (July 29, 2008) at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center after a brief illness.

Ivan was born June 14, 1933, the third of six children, to Robert S. and Lovely M. Templeton Jones. He was raised in East Carters Valley and proudly served his country in the United States Army. He married Nora Matlock on Dec. 22, 1959. Ivan retired from AFG (Blue Ridge Plant) in June 1995 after more than 39 years of service.

Life was an adventure to Ivan. Not a day went by that he did not live to its full potential. He loved to laugh. Travel, videography and sports were just some of his many hobbies. He loved children, and if there was a small child in the room, he or she would be Ivan’s buddy within minutes. He spent many hours with his nieces and nephews in their younger years, and they will each miss him greatly.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Charles Edward Jones.

Surviving are his loving wife of nearly 49 years, Nora Matlock Jones of Church Hill; two brothers, Harold S. (Sam) Jones and wife, Jean and Elmer L. (Doc) Jones and wife, Wanda; two sisters, Nancy Wilson and Shirley Carter, all of Kingsport; a sister-in-law, Wilma Jones of Kingsport; and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends any time at the home and from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Homes, Kingsport.

Funeral services will follow at 8 p.m. today at the funeral home with Rev. Mark A. Roberts officiating.

Graveside services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at Holston View Cemetery.

KINGSPORT — Carl E. Jones, 91, passed away Thursday (Feb. 12, 2009) at Indian Path Medical Center.

He was born on July 26, 1917 in Scott County, Va. Mr. Jones was retired from Eastman Chemical Company after 37 years of service. He was a lifelong member of Cowan's Branch Church and had attended Willow Chapel Baptist Church for many years.

He was a very loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and great-great-grandfather.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Cynthia Jones (2-27-01); one grandchild, Charles Daniel Jones; two great-granchildren, Tucker Jones and Tiffany Jones; parents, Benjamin and Addie Grimm Jones; sisters, Leota Marie Hobbs andFrancis Rector; brothers, Benjamin H. KINGSPORT - Charles Edward "Dude" Jones, 74, went to be with the Lord after a battle with lung cancer Saturday (May 31, 2003) at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center.

He was born in Scott County, Va., (East Carters Valley Road) and lived in the Kingsport area most of his life.

He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict in the 354th Engineer Construction Battalion, which was wiped out in World War II. This was the first time it was re-established. He was a mail clerk in Germany. He was awarded the United Nations Service Medal, Korean Service Medal, Combat Infantry Badge, Leadership Officer Badge Certification. He attended officer training school.

He worked for Kingsport Press Corp. for over 39 years. He retired from M & M Food Market due to illness.

He was a member of Temple Baptist Church, member of the Auditorum Bible class, and drove the church bus for several years.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert S. Jones and Lovely Templeton Jones.

ANDERSON, S.C. — Charles Everett Jones, 87, passed away Jan. 23, 2009.

He was born in Gate City, Va., the son of Andrew Jackson and Gertrude Latture Jones. Mr. Jones was a member of Whitefield Baptist Church of Anderson, S.C. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army in World War II and was recognized for his contribution to the Manhattan Project at Los Alamos, N.M. Mr. Jones retired from Eastman Kodak’s Research Division in Kingsport after 42 years of service.

He was predeceased by his brother, Claude S. Jones, and his twin sister, Sylvia Jones Castle.

Mr. Jones is survived by his wife of 63 years, Marilyn Webb Jones; and two daughters, Barbara Jones Cook and husband, Jerry (Skip) of Kingsport and Sandra Jones Taylor and husband, Randy of Lexington, S.C.; three sons, Stephen Andrew Jones and wife, Pat and Kenneth Eugene Jones and wife, Connie of Kingsport and John Randall Jones of Anderson, S.C.; one sister, Dana Jones Culbertson, of Kingsport; 10 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

RYE COVE. Va. (Spl.) - Mrs. Charmle B. Jones, 48, wife of C. V. Jones, of Rye Cove, died at her home at 12:30 p.m. Friday [ June 15, 1951 .] She had lived in this community all her life. Her father was the late Jimmie Peters and her mother was Laura Tipton Peters.

She was a member of the Primitive Baptist Church of Rye Cove.

Survivors, besides her husband, include: three daughters, Mrs. Elmer Rhoton of Big Stone Gap, Mrs. Darrell Harding of Flint, Mich., and Anna Mae Jones of Clinchport; two sisters, Mrs. William Kern of Kingsport, Tenn. and Mrs. Pat Kern of Flint, Mich.; two half-brothers, Conley Spivcy of Clinchport and Grover Spivey of Flint, Mich.; three grandchildren.

Corna Tennessee (Spivey) Jones

Corna Tennessee Jones, 87, 318 Sewanee Ave., died in Holston Valley Community Hospital Thursday morning [6/7/1973.]

She was born in Hawkins County but had made her home in the Grit Hill community of Scott County before moving to Kingsport. She attended the Grit Hill church.

Survivors are her sons, Jesse, Clinchport, and Everett Jones, Church Hill; three grandchildren, three great-grandchildren; sister, Mrs. Mattie Renfroe, Harriman; brother, Hop Spivey, Harriman.

Scott County Funeral Home Weber City, is in charge of arrangements.

Curtis Nelson Jones

KINGSPORT - Curtis Jones , 82, of 190 Eastern Star Road, died Friday ( Oct. 8, 1999 ) at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center . He was born in Rye Cove, Va. , but had resided in Kingsport most of his life.

He was a son of the late Bogg and Alice Jones Rhoton. Mr. Jones retired in 1981 from General Shale Products Corporation after 36 years of service. He was a veteran of World War II having served in the U.S. Army Airborne Division. He was a member of the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Mr. Jones attended Temple Baptist Church , and was a United Commercial Traveler.

Doyle E. "Cotton" Jones

KINGSPORT — Doyle E. "Cotton" Jones, 69, passed away Sunday evening (Nov. 11, 2007) surrounded by family at his home following an extended illness.

He was born in Pineola, N.C. on July 19, 1938 and was the son of the late M.H. (Marshal Henry) and Velma Key Jones.

He spent his early years in Knoxville, Tenn., where he played football while attending Knoxville Gibbs High School. In his later teenage years the family moved to Kingsport where he spent the rest of his life.

A racing enthusiast, he spent his time in the 60’s working as a "funny car" mechanic, for IHRA at the local drag strips and in his later years looked forward to NASCAR races. Cotton also loved, win or lose the Tennessee Volunteer and Gate City Blue Devil football programs where he watched his grandsons play.

He worked for his dad building many of Kingsport’s bridges and roads also in his early years. A jack of all trades, he was also a carpenter, welder, electrician and a heavy equipment operator at coal mines in Virginia and West Virginia.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Tommy Jones; and a half-sister Mary Lynn Hulin.

He is survived by his daughters, Vikki Jones Roberts and husband, Allan "Cotton", Elizabeth "Bitsy" Humphreys and husband, Doug, all of Gate City, Va.; six grandchildren, BreeAnn Roberts Smith and husband, Rusty of Church Hill, Aaron Roberts and wife, Lindsay of Gate City, Va., Ashley Humphreys Hill and husband, Kevin of Kingsport, Hunter Roberts of Gate City, Va., Will and Luke Humphreys, both of Jefferson City; three great-grandchildren, Allan Cole Smith, Hayden Elizabeth Smith and Elizabeth Caroline Hill; one brother, Jimmy Jones and wife, Shirley of Knoxville, Tenn.; and several nieces and nephews also survive.

The funeral will follow at 7 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Jeff DeBoard and Dr. Rob Jones officiating.

CLINCHPORT, Va. - Edna Mae Jones, 71, died Friday evening (Aug. 29, 2003) at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center after a lengthy illness.

Born in Scott County, Va., she was a daughter of the late Charlie and Nannie Russell Frazier, and was a homemaker.

Surviving are her husband, J.D. Jones of Clinchport; sons, Charles Jones of Gate City, Va., Johnny Jones, Thomas Jones and Gene Jones, all of Clinchport; daughters, Joann Stanley of Gate City, Va., Aleta Minton and Barbara Mendenhall, both of Duffield, Va.; sisters, Mary Neeley of Clinchport and Ruby Russell of Stickleyville, Va.; 10 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

GATE CITY, Va. - Elmer (Skip) C. Jones Jr., 47, of Route 4, passed away Monday (Nov. 11, 2002) at Johnson City Medical Center.

He was born in Kingsport on May 23, 1955. He was a graduate of Gate City High School and a member of the 1970 Gate City High School State Championship football team.

He was previously employed by Begley Coal and Construction as a heavy equipment operator.

Mr. Jones was of the Methodist faith.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Margaret Kathleen Jones.

Born in Washington County, Tenn., he was a farmer and a member of the Grit Hill United Methodist Church.

He was the son of the late Enoch and Cornnie Spivey Jones.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Bertha Lou Head Jones; and two brothers, Everett Jones and Carl Jones.

Hutchinson - Juanita Pauline Jones, 87, passed away Nov. 15, 2010, at Hospice House, Hutchinson.
She was born Dec. 27, 1922, in Downs, the daughter of Edward and Cordelia Quillin Miller. She was a homemaker. On June 4, 1943, she married Merle H. Jones at Santa Barbara, California. He passed away in 1990.
Survivors include her five sons, Bob (Kathy) Jones of Inman, Jesse (Roberta) Jones of Tahlequah, Okla., Johnny (Susan) Jones of Hutchinson, Howard Jones of McPherson, Lainey Jones of McPherson, one daughter, Virginia Bohonik of McPherson, 13 grandchildren, and eight great grandchildren.

Born Dec. 21, 1919 in Jonesville, Va., Mrs. Jones was a homemaker and loved working in her flowers. She was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother.

Mellie ( Shelton ) Jones

KINGSPORT - Mellie Shelton Jones, age 75, died Wednesday ( Feb. 19, 2003 ) at Johnson City Medical Center after a brief illness.

Mellie was a native of Scott County, Va. , and was the daughter of James S. and Melvina (Hartgrove) Shelton and her loving guardians, Dan and Lucinda Haynes.

She resided in Kingsport most of her life and worked 30 years in the oral surgery practice of Dr. Edwin Smith. Mellie was a member of Calvary Baptist Church of Kingsport and also attended Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church of Johnson City .

Mellie was preceded in death by her parents, guardians and sisters, Mary Lou Culbertson, Ruth Housewright and Nell Taylor and recently by her uncle, Charlie Shelton.

Merle Henry Jones

McPHERSON - Merle Henry Jones, 70, McPherson, died Thursday, July 26, 1990, at Hutchinson Hospital.

Mr. Jones was born June 7, 1920, at Edwardsport, Ind., and had been a McPherson resident since 1959, moving from Indianapolis. He was a retired truck driver. He was an Army veteran of World War II and a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 2715, McPherson.

Survivors include his wife, Juanita of the home; five sons, Robert M. of Inman, Jesse D. of Tahlequah, Okla., Johnny W. of Hutchinson, Howard K. of Overland Park and Lainey of McPherson; a daughter, Virginia Bohonik of McPherson; and 11 grandchildren.

The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Ball and Son Funeral Home, McPherson, Pastor Bill Fowler officiating. Burial will be in the McPherson Cemetery with military rites by the VFW Post No. 2715.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

SUNBRIGHT, Va., May 4 - Mrs. Micca Bledsoe Jones, 57, died at St. Mary's Hospital in Norton at 3:20 a.m. Wednesday after a lingering illness.

Funeral services will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at Birch Union Church at Blackwater with the Rev. Lester Smith, the Rev. Dale Duncan, the Rev. Bryan Moore in charge. Burial will be in Bloomer Cemetery .

Minnie (Smith) Jones

Minnie "Nana" Jones, age 89, of Bristol, TN passed away at home on Wednesday, August 17, 2011 following a short illness.

Mrs. Jones was a great wife, daughter, mother, sister, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, cousin, and friend. She was known as "Nana" to all that knew her. She was married to Robert E. Jones for 62 years and they lived and raised their daughters in the Carter’s Valley section of Kingsport.

Nana was a Christian, read her Bible daily, and loved the Lord greatly. She spent her life showing Christian love to her family and those she came into contact with. She was a Sunday school teacher, Willing Workers president, and scout leader. She was a member of The Morrison City Mission for many years and most recently attended Steel Creek Missionary Baptist Church in Bristol, TN. Nana cared for many people inviting them into her home and sharing meals with them. She was known for her fried apple pies, red velvet cake, and almost everything else she cooked.

She will be greatly missed but she did long to see her Lord and her husband, "Bob".

She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Etta Smith; husband, Robert E. Jones; sister, Evelyn Powers; and two brothers, James Smith and John Smith, Jr.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Shirley and Gary Addington, daughter and son-in-law, Debby and Jim Carter; grandson and granddaughter-in-law, Greg and Becky Addington; grandson and granddaughter-in-law, Brian and Donna Addington, granddaughter and grandson-in-law, Danielle and Marc Proctor; grandson and granddaughter-in-law, Justin and Shannon Carter, great-grandsons, Collin Addington, Caleb Addington, Tommy Rigney, Ian Addington, Hunter Proctor, Logan Proctor, Carter Proctor, and Derrick Carter; great-granddaughter, Jenny Kate Carter; sister-in-law, Zola Smith several nieces, nephews and cousins. Nana also had many dear friends in the tri-cities area.

The family wishes to thank the staff of Wellmont Bristol Hospital and Wellmont Home Hospice and her sitters (Barbara, Becky, Ada and Scarlett), for all they did for Nana and the family.

Visitation will be held on from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM at Morrison City Mission. Funeral services will follow with Reverend Steve Lyons and Reverend Clay Austin officiating.

Graveside will be held on Saturday, August 20, 2011 at 10:00 AM in Oak Hill Memorial Park.

KINGSPORT - Paul Edward Jones, 86, passed away Saturday (Dec. 20, 2003) at Sunbridge Hillside Manor.

He was born on April 20, 1917 to Riley David and Virginia Fletcher Jones. He lived most of his life in Kingsport and was self-employed as a master plumber for over 56 years.

Mr. Jones was preceded in death by his father and mother, Riley and Virginia Jones; two brothers, John and Wilson Jones; three sisters, Irene Jones, Zetta Watson and Elva Kite; his grandson, David Jones; and daughter-in-law, Bebe Jones.

Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Anna Lee Coates Jones; one daughter, Judith A. Carter and husband Gary Carter of Kingsport; four sons, Paul W. Jones and wife Diane of Blountville, Van E. Jones and wife Vickie of Gray, Thomas W. Jones of Milledgeville, Ga., and Allen R. Jones and Donna of Kingsport; nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and two step-grandchildren.

Calling hours are from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Oak Hill Funeral Home.

A military committal service will be conducted by the Color Guard of Hammond Post #3 and #265 of Gate City at 10 a.m. Tuesday. The Rev. Don Nations will be officiating the committal service.

WEBER CITY, Va. - Garland Banner Jones, 82, died Friday (Nov. 29, 2002) at Holston Valley Medical Center.

Born on Sept. 16, 1920 in Scott County, Va., he was a carpenter and a veteran of the U.S. Army.

Banner was a member of Weber City Church of God, Weber City, Va.

He was the son of the late James Beverly Jones and Nancy Elizabeth Hale Jones.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Fannie Carter and Florence Smith; five brothers, Lloyd, Lester, Ed, Leonard and William Jones.

Surviving are his wife, Chrisell "Chris'' Jones, Richmond, Va.; daughter, Elizabeth Justine Barden, Richmond, Va.; two stepdaughters, Christine Hicks and Alice Salsbury, both of Shelby, Ohio; three stepsons, Robert Martin and Burnis Martin, both of Shelby, Ohio, and Gerald Edward Barden, Gray; 16 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; two brothers, Robert Ell Jones, Kingsport, and Kyle Talmadge Jones, Gate City, Va.; a special niece, Nancy Houseright and her son, Christopher; and several other nieces and nephews.

Hester Lee (Broome) Jones

KINGSPORT — Hester Lee Broome Jones, 95, Kingsport, went home to be with her Lord on Wednesday (March 18, 2009) after several years of declining health.

She was born Sept. 30, 1913, in Blacksburg, S.C. After moving to Kingsport in the late 1930s, she met and married Wilson Jones. Hester was a loving wife, mother and caregiver. She had a love for sewing and baking. She was a longtime member of Calvary Baptist Church.

Preceding her in death were her father, Horace Broome; mother and stepfather, Bertha and Joseph Morrow; husband, Wilson Jones; sisters, Clara Daniels, Irene Blakely, Virginia Sparks; and brothers, Robert Broome, Ralph Broome and Charles Morrow.

Surviving are one daughter, Jackie Gilbert and husband, Harold; one son, David Jones; two grandsons, Blaine and Michael Gilbert; two great-grandchildren, Kaleb Gilbert and Kloe Gilbert; one brother, Paul Morrow and wife, Virginia; and several nieces and nephews.

The family would like to extend special thanks to the staff of Holston Manor and Cindy with Amedisys Hospice.

Receiving of family and friends will be Friday from 10:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Homes, Kingsport.

Jerry Wayne Jones

KINGSPORT - Jerry Wayne Jones, 49, Kingsport, went home to be with Jesus after a courageous battle with cancer on Saturday (July 10, 2004). He was attending Sullivan Baptist Church. He was surrounded by his loving family.

Born in Virginia, Aug. 7, 1954, he grew up in Rye Cove and lived his adult life in Kingsport. He was a member of the Kingsport Masonic Lodge #688, Knoxville Scottish Rite, Bloomingdale Ruritan and National Fluid Power Society. He loved his work, pheasant hunting in Nebraska with his friends, golf and, most of all, collecting antique clocks. He loved to travel and show his wife and children the beauty of the other parts of the United States.

He was employed by Motion Industries of Kingsport as branch manager.

Jerry was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Annie Babb Jones; five brothers, Willard, J.V., Guy, Dewey, and Larry Jones; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Mildred and Creed Frazier; and special nephew, Bradley Stallard.

He is survived by his wife of 31 years, Glenda Frazier Jones; daughter, Ashley Jones, and son, Andrew Jones, both of the home; sister and brother-in-law, Mrs. Kenneth Flanary (Peggy Jones) of Gate City; brothers and sisters-in-law, Harold and Helen Jones of Church Hill, and Ted and Margie Jones of Rogersville; sisters-in-law, Geraldine Jones and Jane Bishop, both of Gate City; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Debbie and Jeff Smith, Timmy and Lisa Frazier of Gate City, Terry and Connie Frazier, Rev. Jackie and Linda Frazier of Clinchport, Shirley and Rev. Gene Stallard of Fort Blackmore, Lucille and Roger Estepp, Nancy and Dewey Lawson of Gate City, and Eddie and Sue Frazier of Kileen, Tex.; and several very special family friends, nieces and nephews.

Everyone Jerry met became a friend because of his outgoing personality and compassion.

GATE CITY, Va. — Kyle Talmadge (T.J.) Jones Sr., 83, Gate City, Va., entered into rest Nov. 8, 2008 at St. Mary's Jefferson Memorial Hospital in Jefferson, Tenn.
Mr. Jones was born in Scott County, Va. Feb. 2, 1925 to the late James Beverly Jones and Nancy Elizabeth Hale Jones.
He served in the U.S. Navy during War World II, and was of the Christian faith. He loved his horses, his dogs, cats and various other pets. Mr. Jones was self employed repairman and enjoyed talking on his C.B. Radio and his C.B. buddies knew him as T.J.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Fannie Carter and Florence Smith; seven brothers, Lloyd, Ed, William, Lester, Banner, Leonard and Robert Jones.

KINGSPORT - James "Doc" Jones Jr., 64, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday (April 25, 2006) at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center due to complications with diabetes.

He was a life long resident of Kingsport and was a member of Sunrise Baptist Church.

Mr. Jones retired from Willamette following 32 years of service.

He was preceded in death by his son, Randy Jones; and parents, Mitchell and Evelyn Jones.

GATE CITY, Va. - Loyd M. Jones, 89, went home to be with the Lord, his wife and sons, on Friday(Nov. 10, 2000) at Ridgecrest Manor Nursing Home.

Mr. Jones was born in Scott County, Va. on Dec. 6, 1910, a son of the late James B. and Nancy Hale Jones.

In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his wife, Rhoda Bellamy Jones; two sons, Coy and Don Jones (former manager of Gate City Funeral Home); two sisters, Fannie Carter and Florence Smith; and three brothers, Ed, Leonard, and Lester Jones.

Surviving are four brothers, Robert Jones, Kingsport, Garland Banner Jones, Weber City, Va., Kyle T. Jones and the Rev. William Jones, both of Gate City; three grandchildren, Mark A. Jones and Rebecca S. Bottorf, both of Kingsport, and Regina Ellsworth, Murfreesboro, Tenn.; one great-granddaughter, Julianne Johnson; a very special niece, Colleen Fields; and several nieces and nephews.

DUFFIELD, Va. — Lucille (Susie) Jones of Duffield, Va., was born on May 17, 1937, in Scott County, Va., passed away on April 1, 2009, at her home at the age of 71.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Emmet and Lydia Frazier Jones; and two brothers, Willie Lee Jones and Claude Junior Jones.

Susie Jones is survived by her brother, James H. (Sam) Jones and wife, Marie; her nephews, James L. Jones and wife, Tara, David D. Jones and wife, Penny; nieces, Kristie D. Quillen and husband, Joe (all of Duffield, Va.), Brenda M. Stanley and husband, Tommy (Gate City, Va.); four great-nephews, Trever Lawrence, Tyler Lawrence, Jacob Jones and Joshua Jones; six great-nieces, Jennifer Hensley, Brandy Stanley, Courtny Stanley, Kristin Jones, Hailey Quillen and Samantha Jones; a great-great-nephew, Gabriel Hensley; a great-great-niece, Ashley Hensley; along with several cousins.

Ralph Heaton Jones

GATE CITY, Va. - Ralph H. Jones, 79, passed away Saturday (Jan. 15, 2005), with his family by his side, at Indian Path Medical Center after a lingering illness.

Born April 26, 1925, he was a resident of the East Carters Valley community since the age of six. He worked as a plumber for Brooks Plumbing and Heating for 38 years, before retiring in 1987.

From building a river rock fireplace, baking a cake, to delicate wood carvings, he was a man of many talents; always busy and willing to try anything.

The last six months of his life, he occupied his time by sewing; making a quilt, aprons and pot holders to give as gifts to his health care providers and friends.

Mr. Jones was of the Baptist faith.

He served in the U.S. Army, a veteran of World War II as an aviation engineer in the Pacific Theater.

He was preceded in death by parents, Benjamin H. Jones Sr. and Addie Grimm Jones; brother, B.H. Jones Jr.; sister, Leota Hobbs.

Surviving are his wife of 56 years, Vonda Miller Jones; daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and Walt Szadziewicz, Knoxville, Judy and Bobby Bright, Yuma, Va.; granddaughters, Myra Bright and fiancé Mike Trump, Mount Carmel, Leah Bright Rhodes and husband Michael, Yuma, Va.; grandson, Shane Richards and wife Brenda, Tulsa, Okla.; sisters, Mildred Newland and Francis Rector, Kingsport; brother, Carl Jones, Gate City, Va.; many nieces and nephews.

Raymond W. Jones

GRAY - Raymond "Pap' Jones, 78, 227 Oak Grove Road, died Thursday (Dec. 18, 1997) at the James H. Quillen V.A. Medical Center after an extended illness.

A native of Pumpkin Valley in Hancock County, Mr. Jones had lived in Gray since 1958. He served in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers during World War II in the Pacific Theatre and was employed by Pet Dairy Inc. for more than 40 years. Mr. Jones was a former member and Sunday school superintendent of Meadowview Presbyterian Church, Bristol, and was a former member of Princeton Presbyterian Church, Johnson City.

He was the son of the late Mason L. and Etta Mae Deskins Jones.

He was preceded in death by a brother.

Surviving are his wife, Mary Rose Jones ; a daughter and son-in-law, Trula Sherry Forbes and Sonny Forbes, Kingsport; three stepsons, Tony, James and Jack Tipton, all of Erwin; a stepdaughter, Tammy Tipton, Johnson City; a granddaughter and grandson-in-law, Heather and Thomas Love, Gray; two grandsons and granddaughters-in-law, David and Tracy Forbes, Gray, and Travis and Nikki Forbes, Telford; six step grandchildren; two great-grandsons, Ethan and Caleb Forbes; a great-granddaughter, Abbie Forbes; four sisters, Irene Gilley and Pauline Crews, both of Kingsport, Wanda Bea Templeton, Kingston, and Marie Lawson, Nashville; and several nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday at the U.S. National Cemetery at Mountain Home with Pastor Mike Carter officiating. Family and friends will meet at the cemetery.

KINGSPORT - Bob Jones, 84, went to be with the Lord Tuesday morning (Jan. 28, 2003).

Bob was a friend to many and a devoted husband, father and Pap.

He was born in Scott County, Va., the son of the late Bev and Nancy Hale Jones. He was retired from Holston Defense.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by Florence Smith, Fannie Carter, Ed Jones, Leonard Jones, Lester Jones, Lloyd Jones, William Jones and Banner Jones.

Surviving are his precious wife and sweetheart of 62 years, Minnie L. (Smith) Jones; two daughters and sons-in-law, Shirley and Gary Addington, Bristol, Tenn., and Debby and Jim Carter, Chapin, S.C.; grandchildren, Greg Addington and wife Becky, Brian Addington and wife Donna, Danielle Proctor and husband Marc and Justin Carter; great-grandchildren, Colin and Caleb Addington, Hunter and Logan Proctor, Ian Addington and Tommy Rigney.

GATE CITY, Va. - Rosa Vermillion Jones, one of the 12 children of the late Rev. John W. and Sarah McDavid Vermillion, crossed over the river to join her beloved husband, Omar W. Jones (1981), her son, Rhea W. Jones Sr. (1997) and her daughter-in-law, Dana Nickels Jones (1981).

She was 104 years old and the oldest living member of Nottingham United Methodist Church.

Surviving are one granddaughter and husband, Sheila J. and Kelly C. Newton; one grandson and wife, Rhea W. and Margaret Jones Jr.; one great-granddaughter and family, Brenna N. and Anthony Robinson and children, Ashly and Sydni; one great-grandson, Scott Newton, all of Route 4, Gate City, Va.; one sister, Audie Quillen Caddy, California; several special nieces and nephews.

KINGSPORT — Rosie E. Jones, 77, of Kingsport, went home to be with the Lord at 5:45 p.m. Wednesday (Feb. 13, 2008) at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center following a brief illness.

Born in Washington County , Va. , she was the daughter of the late Hugh and Annie Cross Hutchins. She had resided in this area her entire life.

Rosie retired from Modern Bakery and was a member of Andrew Memorial Baptist Church .

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Edward Jones in 1995; one daughter, Dorothy Jean Lane in 2000; and by several brothers and sisters.

Survivors include one son, Thomas Wayne Jones and wife, Virginia Ruth of Kingsport; two grandchildren, Tammy Trent and husband, Wayne of Kingsport and Adam Wayne Jones of Rogersville; two great-grandchildren, Nikki and Justin Trent; two brothers, Bobby Gene Hutchins and John Hutchins, both of Kingsport; a special niece, Gail Way and husband, Bill; and several other nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. today at East Lawn Funeral Home.

Rufus Lee Jones

KINGSPORT - Rufus Lee Jones, 78, Brentwood Drive, went to be with the Lord Saturday afternoon (Nov. 19, 2005) after a brief illness.

He was born Sept. 8, 1927 in Scott County, Va., and was the son of the late Reece and Cena Russell Jones. He lived most of his life (46 years) in Kingsport. He was a member of the Morrison Chapel United Methodist Church. He retired from the Tennessee Eastman Corp. (Kodak) after 42 years of service. He was an avid farmer and a life-time member of the Kingsport Farmers Market.

The family stated he was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and will be missed.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Conley and Ernest Jones; and two sisters, Kate Kendrick and Dana Ruth Jones.

Surviving are his wife of 53 years, Ruth Winegar Jones, of the home; one daughter, Mitzi Gilliam and husband Tim of Church Hill; one son, Allen Jones and wife Sharon of Mount Carmel; four grandchildren, Matthew Gilliam and wife Amber, Jeremy Jones, Aimee Bland and husband Darrell and Tomara Groot and husband Tom; two great-grandchildren, Morgan and Seth Bland; four sisters, Ruby Quillen of Kingsport, Lynda Jones of Church Hill, Della Estep and husband Robert of Kingsport and Louella Jones of Glade Springs, Va.; one brother, James Jones and wife Elaine of Ryegate, Vt.; several nieces, nephews and many friends also survive.

SURGOINSVILLE - William Clinton Jones, 70, of 127 Caney Valley Loop, passed away Wednesday (April 11, 2007) at Wellmont Holston Valley Hospital and Medical Center following a brief illness.

Mr. Jones was a native of Yuma, Va., but had spent most of his life in Hawkins County. He was a retired employee of AFG Industries and was of the Baptist Faith. He was a member of the Eagles Post # 3141 and the United Steelworkers Union (SOAR).

He was preceded in death by his wife, Marjorie Williams Jones; his parents, Albert and Mary Belle Wolfe Jones; half brothers, Paul Jones and Victor Jones; half sister, Alice Tittsworth.

He is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Kathy L. and John Greene, Rogersville; one son, Terry Clinton Jones, Surgoinsville; step-son, William "Butch" Lee and wife, Brigette, Kingsport: two grandchildren, Abby Mae Lee and Sophia Grace Lee; two sisters and brother-in-law, Frances Taylor, Gate City; Mary Elizabeth and Jimmy Haynes, Gate City; very special friend, Pauline Huddleston; several neices and nephews.

Church Hill — William "Bill" Jones, 80, of Church Hill, formerly of Rogersville, died Friday, (Feb. 22, 2008) at his residence following an extended illness.

He was a member of Morrisette Chapel and was a retired engineer with the U.S. Army after 33 years of service. Mr. Jones was a veteran of World War II and the Korean War having served in the U.S. Navy.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Conley and Maude McClellan Jones; sisters, Lillian Ruth Frazier and Betty Lou Williams; niece, Mindy Harrison; mother-in-law, Dora G. Hensley; sisters-in-law, Gerry Hensley and Burita Hensley; brothers-in-law, Ed Frazier, Gene Hensley, Clay Hensley, Jr. and Max Hensley.

He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 41 years, Alberta Hensley Jones; daughter, Rhonda Denise Greear and husband, Darrell of Church Hill; son, Roger K. Jones of Wartsburg; sisters-in-law, Bea Stallings and husband, Houston, Betty Perry and husband, Neal, both of Knoxville, Carolyn Larkins and husband, Jerry of Gray, June Hensley and Ruby Hensley, both of Kingsport; brother-in-law, Joe Hensley and wife, Carolyn of Mt. Vonda Mae (Miller) Jones

GATE CITY, Va. - Vonda M. Jones, 73, passed away Monday evening (Jan. 31, 2005) with her family by her side at Indian Path Medical Center after a lingering illness.

She was born in Scott County, Va., on Sept. 1, 1931 and was the daughter of the late K.J. Miller and Bertha Lee Flanary Miller. She had been a resident of East Carters Valley area since the age of six. She was a homemaker and a nurse at heart, spending alot of time helping and caring for others. She was known for her love and generosity. As a child she began singing with her daddy and sisters, and in later years enjoyed listening to gospel music.

Mrs. Jones was of the Baptist faith.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Ralph H. Jones (Jan. 15, 2005); infant twin brother of three months of age, Vilder Ray Miller.

Surviving are her daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and Walt Szadziewicz, Knoxville, Judy and Bobby Bright, Gate City, Va., (Yuma community); granddaughters, Myra Bright and fiancé Mike Trump, Mount Carmel, Leah Bright Rhodes and husband Michael, Yuma community; grandson, Shane Richards and wife Brenda, Tulsa, Okla.; sisters, Rose Brooks and Sue Luethke, Kingsport; several nieces and nephews.

Rev. William Henderson Jones

GATE CITY, Va. - Rev. William Henderson Jones, 84, of Route 6, entered into rest Saturday evening (Jan. 13, 2001) at his residence after an extended illness.

Rev. Jones was born March 5, 1916 in Scott County, Va., a son of the late James Beverly and Nancy Hale Jones.

In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by two sisters, Fannie Carter and Florence Smith; four brothers, Leonard, Edward, Lester and Lloyd Jones; two grandsons, David and Billy Randal Bellamy.

Before his illness, he was an evangelist for over 50 years, ministering in Scott County, Va., Hawkins, and Sullivan Counties. In his early ministry he walked to Bellamy Town and other churches. Only in his later years did he know the luxury of an automobile.

Rev. Jones is survived by his wife, Nannie M. Jones, Gate City, Va.; two daughters and sons-in-law, Mrs. Nancy (Berl) Houseright, Kingsport, and Mrs. Charlotte (Billy) Bellamy, Gate City, Va.; one son and daughter-in-law, James and Patsy Carrico Jones, Gate City, Va.; three brothers, Kyle Jones, Gate City, Va., Robert Jones, Kingsport, and Banner Jones, Weber City, Va.; seven grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; and several nieces and nephews.

Calling hours will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Gate City Funeral Home and other times at the residence in the Red Hill Community of Gate City, Va.

Shirley (Tipton) Jordan

Shirley Tipton Jordan, 72, Kingsport, died at home Sunday, January 8, 2012, after a battle with lung cancer. She was a homemaker who enjoyed making quilts, housekeeping and meeting new people. Shirley was a devoted Jehovah's Witness and a member of the Woodland Heights Congregation.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Kelly Tipton and Lillie Kinkead Tipton; sister, Beulah Kinkead; brothers, Edward (Dock) Kinkead, Charles Faye Tipton, Fred Leonard Tipton and Junior Lee Tipton.

Shirley is survived by her husband of over 50 years, John Jordan; daughters, Teresa and husband, Jerry Begley, and Brenda Jordan; granddaughter, Brianne Begley and husband Richie Wyckoff; grandsons, Andrew Begley, Adam Jordan and Jordan Tate; sisters, Myrtle Ramey and Rhonda (Bo) Hall ; brothers, James Kelly Tipton, Willie Tipton; and many nieces and nephews.

KINGSPORT — Donald Roy Joyner, 79, of Kingsport, went to his eternal rest on Saturday (Jan. 3, 2009) at Holston Manor Nursing Home.
Donald Joyner was born in Kingsport on Sept. 23, 1929. He worked for Eastman Kodak for 35 years and was a member of Pleasant View Baptist Church. Donald served in the Army at Fort Belvior, Va. He was an avid numismatic and genealogist.
His wife, June Faye Joyner; and his parents, Lewis Quillen and Iva Mae Botts Joyner, preceded him in death. Donald and June were married for 54 loving years.
Surviving are his daughters, Brenda
Moore and her husband, Quinton of Georgia and Barbara Joyner and her husband, Roland Levy of Florida; and his son, Lewis and his wife, Leslie and his grandson, Daniel of New Hampshire.

Leroy Joyner Sr.

KINGSPORT — Leroy Joyner Sr., 79, passed away on Saturday (Oct. 11, 2008) at the Wexford House in Kingsport.

He was born on May 4, 1929 in Scott County, Va. He was raised in the Daniel Boone area of Gate City.

He was a veteran of the United States Army, having served in Germany during World War II.

He returned to Gate City after his military service. He married Charlotte Harley on May 10, 1950. The couple lived in Kingsport, where they raised their 14 children.

He was a retired brick mason, who through the years earned a reputation for his quality craftsmanship, a craft that he passed along to his nine sons. He and his sons assisted in building the first Habitat for Humanity house in Kingsport.

After retiring he enjoyed fishing, woodworking and especially spending time with his granddaughter, Tara Leigh, assisting her with therapeutic horseback riding.

He was a member of Way of Life Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Susie Rebecca Joyner on Oct. 11, 1993; his daughters-in-law, Alberta Joyner and Lisa Joyner; son-in-law, Sammy Stokes; and great-granddaughter, Emma Grace Joyner.

He is survived by his wife, Charlotte; daughters, Carolyn Stokes, Mrs. Roger (Ruth) Clendenin, Mrs. Charles (Teresa) Thompson, Mrs. Jimmy (Sherry) Gilliam and Mrs. Wilburn (Judy) Gibson; sons, Leroy "Butch" Joyner, Jr., Jerry and wife, Donna, Steve and wife, Anita, Rick, Tony and wife, Pam, David and wife, Valerie, Mark and wife, LaShell, Rob and Jeff Joyner; sisters, Faye Gilliam and Nancy Carter; brother, Ed Joyner; 28 grandchildren; and 26 great-grandchildren; along with many nieces, nephews and friends.

He is also survived by his Wexford House family that includes the staff, residents and their families. He was affectionately known as "Old Blue Eyes" and enjoyed sitting in the lobby drinking coffee with many of them. His life was made richer because of them.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Way of Life Baptist Church, 319 Salvation Way in Kingsport.

Funeral services will follow the visitation at 7 p.m. Services will be conducted by Pastor Johnny Gibson and Rev. Mike Owens.

Music will be provided by Nell Clamon, Gail Taylor and his granddaughter, Ariel Gilliam.

Military graveside services with be conducted on Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the Mountain Home Veterans Cemetery in Johnson City.

In a step toward enriching the lives of other residents, the family requests that in lieu of flowers, that contributions are made to the Wexford House Activity Department Bus Fund, 2421 John B. Dennis Hwy, Kingsport, Tenn. 37660.

Emily Denise Justice

KINGSPORT - Emily Denise Justice, infant daughter of Chad Justice and Angela Hamilton, went to be with Jesus Thursday (May 12, 2005) at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center.

She was preceded in death by her maternal great-grandparents, Doc and Leona Clemons and Raymond and Bea Hamilton.

Survivors in addition to the parents include two sisters, Pressley Justice and Cassidy Justice; one brother, Jared Qualls; paternal grandparents, Donald Justice and Gladys Justice; maternal grandparents, Larry and Betty Hamilton and Larry and Opal Hagood; special aunt, Lisa Grindstaff; two cousins, Bruce Estep and Ricky Estep; uncle, Billy Justice.

The family extends a special thank you to the doctors and staff of Holston Valley Specialty OB/GYN, and the staff of Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center Labor and Delivery, and to those who called, stopped by or said a prayer in support of the family in their time of need.

A graveside service will be conducted at 4 p.m. today in East Lawn Memorial Park. The Rev. Billy Ray Courtney will officiate.
