Clinchport Memories By James B. FugateClinchport in the late '20's and '30's was difficult for most people coping with the effects of the depression. People spread their money as far and as best as they could. But there were fun times too, times when people would gather at the mouth of Stock Creek to swim, kids played baseball and roundball.I can remember when there were "Jockey Days" each Saturday. Enormous crowds would gather on the banks of the Clinch River from Clinchport and the surrounding area to swap horses and mules. The day would be spent racing horses, swapping stories, drinking "moonshine," swapping knives, and generally having a good time. People usually came to town on Saturdays to take care of business. They would bring their produce and other goods to town to barter at the general stores for needed items. They might go to Kelly Carter and Jim Bray's Produce House and sell their chickens, eggs, walnut kernels or turkeys for cash. Or they might go Neely's General Store or J.M. Bowling's General Store. At Bowling's they sold everything from caskets to hardware to groceries.
