From:Swann Reid Can someone please tell me the approximate location of the Salem Turnpike of 1889. My ancestor, John Crouse, owned 42 1/2 acres on it near the corporation limits. It sold in 1889 for $15,600 to a Mr. John Epps. This seems like a large amount of money for that amount of land. The letter to my gggrandmother about the sale of her father's property indicated that at the sale there was a large attendance, including representatives of several syndicates and the bidding was conducted with considerable spirit. Does anyone know whether a railroad or something may have been planned there at that time?
