About Richmond County
Richmond County was formed in 1692 from (Old) Rappahannock County. It was named either for Richmond borough in Surrey, England, or the late-seventeenth-century duke of Richmond. It is not to be confused with the city of Richmond, which is in Henrico County.
The county seat of Richmond County is Warsaw, which has a zip code of 22572. In 1955, Warsaw had a population of 435. Researchers are fortunate to find this very old, eastern Virginia county, unlike many similarly situated counties, has had little in the way of record loss.
To contact the Richmond County Courthouse, write to PO Box 956, Warsaw VA 22572, or phone (804) 333-3781.

Note: If you are seeking information about the City of Richmond, please visit the site for Henrico County. Also, Richmond County (Along with Essex) is part of what used to be the extinct (Old) Rappahannock County from the 17th century.

Post a Query or Join a Mailing List
Two resources at Rootsweb that will greatly facilitate your genealogical research are the Message Board and the Mailing List.
The Message Board is a good place for posting a note that a large number of people might see and respond to over a long period of time. The Mailing List, however, is an e-mail list for genealogical
research in the area. It is for more in-depth discussions and longer posts than you might see on the Message Board, and it is a method of assuring that a dedicated group of list members will be sure
to receive your note as an e-mail message. It then provides a platform for the exchange of ideas, information and comments, all by e-mail. The Mailing List is spam and virus-free, because all posts
are filtered through Rootsweb servers.
If you use web based mail, both the Message Board and the Mailing List can be accessed on the WWW through your web browser, but the Mailing List needs only your e-mail program. The Mailing List
operates in two forms, the Mail mode, and the Digest mode.
Please feel free to search or enter a query for your lines on the Message Board or join the Mailing List, using the boxes below.
Regarding Questions You Might Have .....
The author of this web site, who resides in Gold Canyon, Arizona, regrets that due to other commitments, he is unable to respond to unsolicited questions pertaining to your research in
this county. He will gladly answer any questions about the site itself, but recommends the query board and mailing list below for all other information you might be seeking.

Thanks to RootsWeb for providing space for this project.

Richmond County's Neighbors in the VAGenWeb Community
It is often helpful to search for answers in adjoining counties.
About the USGenWeb Project
In March and April, 1996, a group of genealogists organized the Kentucky
Comprehensive Genealogy Database Project. The idea was to provide a single entry point for all counties in Kentucky, where collected databases would be stored. In addition, the databases would be
indexed and cross-linked, so that even if an individual were found in more than one county, they could be located in the index.
At the same time, volunteers were found who were willing to coordinate the collection of databases and generally oversee the contents of the web page. Required elements of a county page included
offering queries and lookups.
This project became known as KyGenWeb.
Within just a few months, most of the Kentucky counties had a volunteer coordinator, and it was decided to expand the project to include Virginia and the other states... and USGenWeb was
born, and a short time later WorldGenWeb.
Today, over eight years later, it is easier than ever to research your family while sitting at your computer at home.
This site is always under construction, and we hope to keep it in good shape. It is optimized for Microsoft Internet Explorer, so please let
us know if something doesn't work in your browser.
Please help make it attractive and useful to researchers with an interest in Richmond County by sending transcriptions, photos, information, books or resources you would be willing to share,
either here or via email with other Richmond County researchers. If you have any such information to share, please contact Ralph Jones, the coordinator for this county web site. Your support is
appreciated and VITAL!
We hope you enjoy your visit and find something you are looking for.
