OLD PORTLOCK FAMILY CEMETERY
Located in Portlock, a town in Norfolk Co. Portlock was annexed to South Norfolk in
1951, and South Norfolk was merged with the City of Chesepeake in 1963. It is located
on the Southern Branch of the Elizabeth River, directly across from St. Julian Naval
Depot. The offramp from 464 is Freeman Ave. From the intersection of Freeman Ave.
(going East from the freeway) is Franklin St. One block North on Franklin, East side of
the street, is an old 2 story house, not in very good repair and with old outbuildings and
“stuff” scattered around behind it. This home was originally built by Tapley Portlock,
now owned by Simpsons. The home does not face the street, but faces South, back in off
of Franklin. Next door on the North side of this property is a nice brick house facing
West on Franklin.
Behind the brick house and behind the 2 story, in the corner formed by that L is the
graveyard. There is a gate on the Southwest corner of the graveyard, but that only gets
you into about 1/3 of it, with a strong picket fence around that. The rest of it is fenced
with a wire fence, and the only way we could find our way into that was to walk all the
way around to the East end of the old house, through the junk, and find a break in the
fence on the North side of the graveyard.
This cemetery contains PORTLOCK, WILLIAMSON, GIBSON and a couple of
BUTTstones. Willliamson, Portlock and Butt are related, but the Gibsons bought the
property from Tapley Portlock, or one of his descendants. Time did not permit a
transcription from all the graves, but here are the ones we did get:
