Written as a narrative poem, Dearest of Captains traces the life of Sally Louisa Tompkins in three parts: Poplar Grove (1833-1849); The War (1861-1865); and Richmond (1865-1916). Often called the "Florence Nightingale of the Confederacy", Tompkins, the only woman to be commissioned an officer in either the Army of the Confederacy or the Union Army, is a heroine of the Civil War.
