BEALE, BREWER - I am seeking information on Robert & Holland Brewer Beale of Isle of Wight Co., VA said to be the parents of Jordan Beale of Potecasi, Northampton, Co., NC. Robert & Holland Brewer Beale of Isle of Wight Co., VA, were married in Southampton Co. [possibly Franklin, VA], on Oct. 29, 1789 per minister's return. Their son[?], Jordan Beale, was born in VA January 10, 1797, and died at his home place in Potecasi, NC on December 22, 1857. He married Rachel [?] about 1818. They had the following children; Angelina b Jan 20, 1820; Eveline, Emily & Emma b 1822; Mary Ann b 1824; Eliza b 1825; Willis M. b 1826; Elizabeth Cornelia b 1831; Ferdinand Cortez b 1836; & Harriet b 1840. Jordan Beale married Eliza Martin Copeland Mar 1842. Their children were Robert I.; Dallas M.; and John Randolph Beale. Jordan Beale's grandson, & son of John Randolph Beale, J. Jordan Beale of Raleigh, NC, wrote in a letter that his grandfather was one of three brothers from England. Willis Beale is thought to be Jordan's older brother & head of household in Northampton County, NC in the 1810 Census. I am also trying to confirm that John Beale was a third brother who was living in Northampton with Willis and Jordan in 1810. We also think that Robert Beale of Isle of Wight County, VA had two brothers, William & Burwell Beale, but have been unable to confirm this. The early land records in Northampton Co., NC show transactions for John, William, Burwell, Robert, Jordan & Willis Beale (Beal, Beel). Any help would be greatly appreciated. DAUGHERTY, GAY - Seeking information to help me further my research on the GAY and DAUGHERTY families who originated from Isle of Wight, Virginia. Some of the sons and daughters of these two families migrated to North Carolina in the 1750s. My most conclusive evidence of Isle of Wight, Va links is a couple of deeds from Samuel Daugherty to Isham Gay for land situated in Edgecombe County,North Carolina. The first deed appears to be a dowry gift from Samuel Daugherty when Isham married Samuel's daughter, Mary Daughtery in 1753. Samuel also deeded lands in Edgecombe and Franklin Counties, N.Carolina to his sons, Joseph and John Daugherty.... all of these deeds are filed in Isle of Wight...Samuel Daugherty's home. I have to assume that Isham Gay was also from Isle of Wight and moved to the Carolina territory after he married. Both Joseph & John Daugherty were named administrators on Isham Gay's estate in 1791. Joseph Daugherty was also named guardian of Isham's two orphaned sons, Eaton and Kinchen Gay (Joseph's sister, Mary D. GAY was still alive and well living along the Tar River in Edgecombe County with her sons). It is interesting that Isham & Mary Gay's neighbors in Edgecombe County, along the Tar River, were Taylors, Proctors, Joyners, Edwards and Sharpes....all Virginia families, as well. (and who are also intermarried into my Gay clan to such a level of complexity that I can't really tell what the relationships are anymore!!) If any of these names sound familiar, I'd love to hear from you!

ATKINSON, LUPO, LUPER, BELL - Researching Lupo, Luper family and allied names, one of which is Atkinson. I have learned that the Atkinson family of 1790 Robeson County NC had come from South- ampton County, VA, where Samuel Atkinson died about 1785, leaving sons Isham, Jesse, and Samuel and wife Martha. Then I found in Deed Book 9 p 542 for Isle of Wight that Samuel Atkinson and wife Martha "of Southampton County" sell land in IOW, "being land willed by William Pope to his two daughters Mary Pope and Ann Pope." Not clear to me how Samuel and Martha got the land, would like to hear from anyone who has researched the Atkinson family. James Lupo died abt 1790 in IOW Co and had three sons, James, Laban and William. Son James married Anne Atkinson, the daughter of Benjamin Atkinson, and they went to Edgecombe Co, NC. Son Laban was in Robeson Co NC by 1800. Laban's son, William, witnessed a will for Mary Bell in 1804, her sons were Joseph, William and John Atkinson--my working hypothesis is that Mary was the widow of Isham Atkinson and also the widow of John Bell. Having a solid connection to the Isle of Wight Atkinsons may help us discover what happened to both Lupos and Atkinsons after they left Robeson Co.

LIGHTFOOT, SIMMS, PIERCE, WILSON - I would like to find out more about Thomas Lightfoot, son of Henry Lightfoot (d. 1754) who was Clerk of Court for Isle of Wight, 1710-1729. Did he marry Sarah Jordan and Honor Pierce. Honor was married to a Lightfoot and I always assumed that it was Thomas. Honor remarried to John Simms by 1754 and they moved to Brunswick Co., VA. I think that two of Thomas' sons may have been Capt. John Lightfoot (c. 1751-1823, Stewart Co., TN) who initially migrated to Montgomey Co., NC. He named sons Thomas, Henry, Wilson, James, and John. The Wilson surname perhaps came from the fact that Honor Pierce Lightfoot had three Wilson half-brothers. The other son, perhaps by Sarah Jordan, may have been Capt. Henry Lightfoot of Moore and Chatham Co., NC. He died c. 1789 leaving sons Henry and Bartholomew. I know that it is not enough to go on, but the naming customs of these families point directly at the Isle of Wight Lightfoots.

CANADY/CANADA, EVANS, STOKES - It was suggested to me by someone who is researching the Dixon family in Isle of Wight Co. that there were Canady's there. I never thought of them as coming from Isle of Wight, but perhaps she's right. I am specifically looking for Caleb CANADY, born in 1770-73, supposedly in Virginia, but I have never been able to find him there. In fact, I don't have any written record of him until he shows up on the 1813 Putnam Co., GA Tax List. His name could be spelled any number of ways, and it seems that the spelling kept changing. It could have been spelled CANADA, CANADAY, CANNADY, CANNADAY, even KENADY or KENNEDY. Caleb married Mary "Polly" EVANS also born in Virginia in 1780, the daughter of William EVANS and Wilmuth EVANS, possibly the daughter of a Richard STOKES of Lunenberg Co., VA. If anyone has any information on any of these people, I would appreciate your help. Thanks very much.
