RAIFORD - The roots of the American branches of the Raiford family tree can be traced fairly accurately and in quite a bit of detail to the immigrant, Philip Raiford, who lived most of his life and died in Isle of Wight County, Virginia. Land grants, indentures, and other documents have been located for this Philip Raiford bearing dated from 1679 unitl the probation of this will in 1724. After many years of reserarch, the author (William Russell Raiford) has concluded that this Philip was the only bearer of the Raiford name to migrate to the American mainland, and that it is highly probable that the entire Raiford clan in America can trace its ancestry to him. ROUNCIFULL, ROUNSAVELL, ROUNSEVELL - I have been searching for some time now for the original immigrant of my family in the United States. I have proven my line back to Connecticut in 1680, however can get no further than that in New England.

Interestly enough a person of the same surname reportedly came to the Isle of Wight in Virginia some forty years earlier--howevere I have never been able to prove that this person landed in or ever lived in Virginia. Both "Early Virginia Immigrants" by Greer, and "Cavaliers and Pioneers" by Nugent report that a Henry Rouncifull was transported to Virginia as part of headright grant to Justinian Cooper of 1050 acres; first is Warrosquyoake in 1636, then the Isle of Wight in 1637. However I have never been able to find a Henry or anyone else by the surname in Virginia during the seventeenth century. Justinian Cooper is there however-I have a published copy of his will. The real spelling of the surname should be Rounsevell or Rounsavell, something similar to that.
