I am from Henry County, TN, allegedly named for Patrick Henry in 1821 because a sister of his settled there, but we are unable to find names of his sisters either before or after their marriages. Do you have information on them? We suspect McCampbell or Manley may have been the married name, if the legend is true, and that she may have migrated through NC to TN.Most of this western Tennessee county was Revolutionary War veterans land grants to NC soldiers. mcgeheelt@wofford.edu Larry T. Cross, Joseph I show a Jacob Crosswith father Joseph in my line (Joseph Jr. is Jacob's brother), and traced them back to Hanover County. However my info on Joseph shows he was born in 1747 Loudon Co.,VA d: Jan 15, 1842 Buncombe Co.,NC. But the VA Library archives show what appears to be the same Joseph as dying in 1797, a year that he supposedly married Sarah Ann Cogdell. Jacob b. 1792 d. ? so if his father married her she wasn't his mother. Any of you that could help clarify this Cross line will be appreciated. I do not have a copy of the will and info from the VA archives yet, and I'm sure it will help. Bobby Cross Jr. Polk County TN bobby@wingnet.net Bobby Cross 26 Jun 1999

Need help in bringing these possible brothers together, other than circumstantial evidence. Any other researchers out there working on these lines?
Hancock, John 174? Virginia, Capt. Historical Reg. Of Virginians in the Rev., soldiers, sailors and marines, 1775-1783. Ed. By John H. Gwathmey. Richmond, Va. 1938. (13, 872p.):344
This John is believed to have been (Capt.) John Hancock b 1753; m 1774 VA to Nancy Ann Graves when they lived in Louisa Co., VA. Later they removed to Woodford, Fayette, & Franklin Cos., KY and finally to Butler Co., OH. John is believed on circumstantial evidence to have been the s/o Benjamin & Mary (Beadles) Hancock of Hanover Co., VA. It appears John never collected a pension based on his Revolutionary War Service. Seeking confirmation of his ancestry and siblings. Austin HANCOCK, s/o Benjamin & Mary (BEADLES) HANCOCK, served in the Revolutionary War and appears to have received a pension for his services. Austin lived his entire life in Louisa Co., VA. He is believed (on circumstantial evidence) to have been a brother of the above (Capt.) John Hancock & a brother of the Joseph Hancock mentioned in his pension abstract. I am seeking assistance to find Thomas W. Gooch's family in Virginia 1750 -1820, in Hanover, Louisa or Albemarle counties. In addition to posting a Query I seek professional and/or voluntary research assistance. Refer to the attached:
Thomas W. died in 1862 in Pope Co., AR. The search of records in Arkansas and Pope Co. show no record of Thomas W., but many records were destroyed in this area during the Civil War. Searching for Thomas W.'s parents have produced nothing to date. At least two NC families had sons by the name of Thomas but there is sufficient information to conclude neither was Thomas W. of Orange Co., NC. They are: Thomas the son of Daniel Gooch of Granville Co. and Nancy Sneed. Thomas the son of Rowland Gooch of Granville Co. who married Jemima Hester in 1803. There were no Thomases in Orange Co., NC censuses in 1810 or 1820.

There were Thomasís in VA that could be the Thomas W. of NC, or his father, including the following:
Thomas W. Albemarle Co., VA in 1810, 1820 & 1830 Censuses, but not 1840! Thomas of Louisa Co., VA in 1820 & 1830 Censuses but not 1840! Thomas, one of 12 children of William Gooch of Hanover, VA (1739-1802) and Frances Rice (1740-1816) of Caswell, NC; they were married in 1762. This Thomas would have married at age 37, fathered Thomas L. at 71?
Query: Where did Thomas W. of Orange Co., NC come from and who were his parents?
If you have information about the Gooch families of VA please contact me.

Hanover Co., VA:
Can anyone help fill out the following information and how far back the two families(Crenshaw and Guill) go together. I think knowing the movements of the related families might help me search for Guills - especially problem people like Lee Alexander or my personnal favorite the appearing and dissapearing Walter and John.

So I'll start with the Crenshaw family:
1. Nicholas Crenshaw married Mary Carr in Hanover Co. VA in 1754.
2. William Crenshaw married Sarah Baker in Louisa Co., VA in 1783 I
believe they later lived in Lunenburg and in Halifax Counties.
3. Martha Crenshaw married Joseph T. Guill in Halifax Co. in 1855

I am seeking information on the ancestry of a family of Wests which probably resided in the portion of Hanover County that eventually became Louisa County, VA. Specifically, I am researching the lines of William West (1752-1842), who was probably a native of the Hanover/Louisa area, his brother, James West (1756-1811) of the same approximate area, and Amos West (1766-1819), who was born in Green Springs, Louisa County, VA. Other siblings include Leonard West (1760-1842) of Granville County, NC, Richard West (1764) supposedly from Louisa County, VA, and Agness West (1762-1842) of the VA/NC border. Amos' father, whose name is presently unknown, was a wealthy Virginia planter and merchant. His grandmother was an English lady of noble descent. The only singular piece of information relating to these parents is that they died early deaths, and their children were reared by a maiden aunt, Miss Lucy Fike, of Orange County, NC. She is supposedly the daughter of John Thomas and Elizabeth Fike of Hanover County, VA. Does anyone have any knowledge of these families? I would greatly appreciate any information and would gladly expound upon what is written here for those interested. bmwest@usit.net Ben West 18 Jan 1999

There is a marriage record for Nathaniel Anthony and Nancy Keen at Louisa County, Virginia 22 October 1789, p. 47. I have been told that Nathaniel Anthony and a Miss Farmer were Elizabeth's parents--no documentation was given.  Does anyone know the children of Nathaniel and Nancy and/or the children of Nathaniel and Miss Farmer?  Does anyone have a record of Elizabeth Price Anthony in their Anthony records?

I am also interested in Price as her middle name. This family is noted for using a mother's or grandmother's maiden name as the first two names of a new daughter. I feel that there is an Elizabeth Price in her ancestry. Can anyone identify her parents and grandparents? Family oral history is that the family came from Hanover Co., VA. It may have been both the Anthony and Diggs families who came from that area or only one. The Diggs' family was in Louisa Co. for the birth of John and maybe for his father,Thomas. normad@intrex.net Norma Diggs 18 Jan 1999

Looking for information on Elisha Meredith (b. 1721, d. 1726) of Snow Hill, Hanover County, VA.  He married Elizabeth Cocke of Malvern Hill in Hanover.   Am also interested in Elisha Meredith's father, Samuel Meredith (b. 1689 at Liberty Hall, New Kent Co.), as well as Elisha's son, Pleasant Meredith (b. 1761, married to Ann Lee in 1793).   Thank you!  Anne Meredith (Cordle) Hamlett.   689 Fowlkes Road, Victoria, VA  23974, woodpark@msinets.com Anne Hamletts 18 Jan 1999

My 3rd great-grandfather was John Ford Sr., b. 1762 in Albermarle County, Va. He married Elizabeth England in April 1785 and they move to Eastern Tenn. by 1801/02. His parents were supposedly living Hanover Co., VA. at one time; also some of his siblings, names unknown, may have remained in the Hanover County area. Some names of men who may be his father were Timothy W. Ford , Tandy (Lewis) Ford , Bartlett, William, and John Ford , but nothing else to go on. John Ford Sr. received a Rev. War pension for his service. Will share any data I have. gfordellman@tyler.net   Glynda Ellman 18 Jan 1999
