James William & Savilla (Nethers) Bowen
This photo is of my 2g-grandparents, James William Bowen & Savilla Nethers. James was b. 28 May 1858 in Culpeper Co., VA at
the Bowen homestead near Gibson Mill. He married Savilla Nethers on 10 June 1891 in Culpeper Co. James d. 29 April 1918 in
Brandy Stn., Culpeper Co., VA. James' parents were George Walker Bowen & Rebecca
Everhart Crigler. Savilla Nethers was the daughter of Arnold Nethers (the miller of Nethers, Rappahannock Co., VA) and Ellen Huffman. Savilla's great-grandfather, John
Lewis Gottfield Neutre became known as Godfrey Nethers in Culpeper Co.
James was the Principal at Brandy Station School and he attended the Univ. of VA in 1887-8 and received a certificate for
teaching. He was also a merchant in brandy according to his obituary. He belonged to the local Masonic Temple and was a
Baptist. Notes I have that are uncited as to source indicate he was Welsh and descended from Quakers.
