CLOTH OF GOLD Several centuries ago the French and English kings met in conference in France, in a town near where the front line trenches were held during the great war. Two thrones were erected in a large field and a cloth of gold spread from one throne to another. Royalty was honored. A cloth of gold is spread on what was No Mans Land. It is formed by thousands and thousands of dandelions----clustered---the pall of the fallen heroes. Under each mound of ailen clay in the old churchyard, in the village burial ground, in the cemeteries just behind the lines each wooden cross white against the sky, marks the grave of a hero. Their bodies have crumbled, have returned to the dust from which they sprang, but their sprit rides upon the winds. They too, have heard the message of Easter. Their souls have rein, glorious, immortal.

UTAH IS PROUD. Utah will keep green the memory of her sons fallen in France. The gold service star hangs in the windows of more than 700 homes in the state. To more than 700 homes Governor Simon Bamberger, as the chief executive of the state, has sent messages of condolence upon an irreparable loss. Utah is not grieving over her fallen sons. Their deaths were glorious ones and their sacrifice was not in vain. Autocracy has been crushed and civilization lives. Their deeds long will be remembered. Utah is proud of her fallen heroes. In order that the deeds of heroic Utahns of the world war may be read with pride by future generations, Utah is perpetuating them in the form of a history. This history, which will contain the service record of each of the 23,000 men of Utah called to the colors, is being prepared by Arch M. Thurman, secretary of the sate council of defense and state war historian, and Mrs. Mary Gilmer Rankin. Service records of more than 10,000 men have been indexed and filed preparatory to being written into history. Of the more than 700 Utah soldiers who are listed as casualties, the names of 535 have been gathered by Mr. Thurman
