The Rigby Family

First Generation
1. ___ Rigby was born in England. 

He had the following children:
   2 F i. Jane Rigby was born in England. Jane married ___ Hartwell
   3 F ii. Kate Rigby was born in England. 

"Kate and Esther Rigby must have remained in England. I never met them," Anne Treacy-McGill, 20 Jan 2000.

   4 F iii. Esther Rigby was born in England. 
+ 5 M iv. William Rigby was born in 1864.
+ 6 F v. Mary Ann Rigby .
   7 F vi. Sister Hedwig Rigby was born in England. 

Sister Hedwig was one of the first in the Little Sisters Of Poor religious order. She died in an earthquake in Italy. She was found next to her bed saying morning prayers.

 

Second Generation
5. William Rigby (___) was born in 1864 in England. He died in RI. William married Rose Anne Hanrahan in Pawtucket, RI. Rose was born in 1860 in Ireland. She died in RI in 1937. 

William was a convert to Roman Catholicism. Both of his parents were born in England. He entered US in 1885.
He and his family live at 42 Grotto Avenue, Pawtucket, RI at time of 1910 US Census
Both of Rose Ann's parents were born in Ireland. Rose might have been born in Lancashire, England or Warwick, Kent, England. Rose entered US in 1887..

William and Rose had the following children:
   8 F i. Elizabeth Rigby was born in 1888 in Pawtucket, RI. 
+ 9 M ii. William Rigby was born in 1890. 
+ 10 F iii. Rose Rigby was born on 8 Oct 1893. She died in Dec 1981. 
+ 11 F iv. Mary Rigby was born in 1896. 
+ 12 F v. Anna Rigby was born in 1899. 
   13 F vi. Jane Rigby was born in 1901 in Pawtucket, RI. 

Jane and sibling Ellen were twins.

   14 F vii. Ellen Rigby was born in 1901 in Pawtucket, RI. Ellen was married.
+ 15 F viii. Margaret Rigby was born on 1 Feb 1904. She died on 16 Sep 1975. 
   16 M ix. Edward Rigby was born in 1907 in Pawtucket, RI. Edward married and lived in North Carolina.
   17 M x. John Rigby was born in Pawtucket, RI. 

 

6. Mary Ann Rigby (___) was born in England. Mary married Harold Whittaker

Harold's children were said to have been " super smart." He was a convert to the Roman Catholic Faith.

Harold and Mary had the following children:
   18 F i. Ada Whittaker was born in Pawtucket, RI. Ada died at age twenty-one from a kidney infection.
   19 F ii. Sister M Alicia Whittaker RSM was born in 1909 in Pawtucket, RI. She died on 26 Oct 1996 in Cumberland, RI. She was buried in Resurrection Cemetery, Cumberland, RI.

Baptized Elizabeth H Whittaker she entered Sisters of Mercy on 14 Aug 1927. She taught in the Providence Diocese. She was the principal of St Anthony School in West Warwick and St Patrick School in Cumberland, RI. She retired in 1982.

   20 M iii. Ralph Whittaker was born in Pawtucket, RI. He died in 1998. 
   21 F iv. Nora Whittaker was born in Pawtucket, RI. 

When Elizabeth Whittaker entered the convent, her sister Nora invited Rose O'Gara to take her bed. Rose gladly accepted the invitation and lived with them for 10 - 15 years. Rose was charged little or no board ($10/month ). Rose later went to care for some aunts and then had her own apartment. Nora died from a brain tumor.

   22 F v. Mary Whittaker was born in Pawtucket, RI. Mary died at age forty-one. Mary married Oscar Cote

Oscar was an accountant for Shartenberg's Department Store in Pawtucket, RI.

 



Third Generation
9. William Rigby (William, ___) was born in 1890 in Pawtucket, RI. 

William died in a fire. William Rigby's first wife died at a young age. She left a daughter Mary Ann. He then married a girl in the Ozarks. The second wife raised his daughter Mary Ann. The second wife converted to Roman Catholicism long after William (Bill) deserted the family and left for California. The daughter Mary Ann married and gave birth to fourteen children. One, with the surname of Carter, is  an instructor at the Navy War College, Newport, RI. William also had a son. 

William had the following children:
     23 F i. Mary Ann Rigby was born in OH. 

 

10. Rose Rigby (William, ___) was born on 8 Oct 1893 in Pawtucket, RI. She died in Dec 1981 in East Providence, RI. Rose married Stephen Ryan. Stephen died in East Providence, RI. 

Rose had diabetes as an older woman. Her 50th wedding anniversary was in the 70s in East Providence and was attended by a large number of young relatives including children and grandchildren. Stephen died of Parkinson's Disease in the 1970s. 

Stephen and Rose had the following children:
+ 24 M i. Stephen Ryan was born in 1922. 
+ 25 F ii. Frances Ryan was born in 1925. She died in 1983. 
   26 M iii. Joseph Ryan was born in 1925. 

Frances and Joseph were twins. Joseph had several children. One was a boy. 

 

11. Mary Rigby (William, ___) was born in 1896 in Pawtucket, RI. Mary married James Mahoney

They had the following children:
   27 F i. M. Ursula Mahoney was born in 1923. 
   28 F ii. Eileen Mahoney was born in 1925. 

 

12. Anna Rigby (William, ___) was born in 1899 in Pawtucket, RI. Anna married Clement Rooney

They had the following children:
   29 M i. John Rooney .
   30 M ii. James Rooney .
   31 M iii. Ted Rooney .

Edward "Ted" is an artist in New York. Edward's given name is the Edward of St Edward's Church in Pawtucket, RI. 

   32 F iv. Margaret Rooney .


14. Margaret Rigby (William, ___) was born on 1 Feb 1904 in Pawt, RI. She died on 16 Sep 1975 in Memorial Hosp, Pawtucket, RI. She was buried in RI. Margaret married Edward Treacy son of Michael J Treacy and Susan Corcoran. Edward was born on 28 Feb 1902 in RI. He died on 12 Mar 1978 in Memorial Hosp, Pawtucket, RI. He was buried in RI. 

Margaret was an employee of Shartenburgs Department Store in downtown Pawtucket, RI.
"When my father died, Bob and I left him at 11 pm Saturday evning at Memorial Hospital (Pawtucket, RI). He had been in a coma that whole week. . . The doctor told Bob and I that he would die within twenty-four hours. . . We stayed with him. . . left for the 5:15 pm Mass at St Patrick's. . . I remember Fr. Kelly asking me how he was doing. . . I told him that he had twenty-four hours. . . He said twenty-four hours or twenty-four years. Bob is a deacon in our church. . . He was on the altar that night. . . I sat with Sr Fran Conway. . . Later we returned to Memorial and stayed until 11 pm. He died at midnight. . . We returned and prayed the Our Father. We went to my Aunt and Uncle's home (his brother and sister) told them with Anne and Tom and then went home.
"My father always wanted to go to Ireland. . . He didn't get there. . . He was a great story teller and a wonderfull grandfather. . . always telling stories at our super table. . . He came very often with my mother and after she died, he came alone. . . He still told beautiful stories. . . Ken and John really loved him and still have beautiful memories of him. . . Once Anne and Tom brought him to your sister Patsy's home (in Westerly, RI). It was the year before he died. . . . Jack brought him out on his boat.and they were so nice to him. . . He talked about that for a long time. . . I was always happy he had that day. . . " Rose Treacy-MacLure, 12 Dec 2003.

They had the following children:

+ 34 F ii. Rose Treacy was born in 1938. 

 

Fourth Generation
24. Stephen Ryan (Rose Rigby, William, ___) was born in 1922 in East Providence, RI. Stephen married Ethel Law daughter of Harry C Law and Chin Shi. Ethel was born in 1931 in White Plains, Westchester County, NY. She died in 1989 in Oneonta, NY. 

Stephen was decorated in WWII for field valor in Sicily and North Africa, returned as a disabled war hero, and spent a year of rehabilitation in Framingham, MA. He had shrapnel embedded in his thigh for the rest of his life. He was graduated with a Bachelors Degree by Yale University. He was commander of a DAV chapter in NY for many years. He focused on assisting local disabled veterans in obtaining the benefits they needed, when they had individual issues in obtaining the right authorizations.
After Yale, Stephen earned an accounting degree in Arizona, he traveled the world on business. He returned and earned his PhD from Columbia University in History. He taught at the Merchant Marine Academy at West Point. He was a professor at SUNY Oneonta, NY from 1962 to 1982. 
He was the editor of the Psychohistory Journal in New York City for a number of years.and wrote the 
book "Petain the Soldier." He wrote an article for the magazine "America" entitled "Yanks at Yale."

Ethel was graduated from Vassar in 1953, and was awarded a PhD by SUNY in Binghamton, NY. She was Head of Toxicology at Wyeth Laboraories in King of Prussia, PA. Ethel died of breast cancer.

Stephen and Ethel had the following children:

   35 M i. Stephen Ryan was born in 1961. 

Stephen, a graduate of Wesleyan, is a journalist, college teacher and businessman in Singapore.

          + 36 F ii. Nora Ryan was born in 1963. 


25. Frances Ryan (Rose Rigby, William, ___) was born in 1925. She died in 1983 in RI. 

Frances and her brother Joseph were twins. She was married twice. She had several children, two daughters by her first husband and a son by her second husband. She died shortly after she was diagnosed with cancer.

Frances had the following children:
       37 F i. Sharon .
       38 F ii. Gail .

 

33. Anne Louise Treacy (Margaret Rigby, William, ___) was born on 15 Aug 1933 in North Bend Hospital, Pawtucket, RI. 

Anne was a librarian for Rhode School Of Design and for Johnson & Wales Business School both in Providence, RI. Anne has a BA fom Providence College in RI. She has a masters degree in Library Science from the University of RI. Anne obtained her degrees while at the same time being a homemaker for her husband and their seven children.

Anne married Thomas Anthony Aquinas McGill son of Francis Joseph McGill Sr and Bridget Agnes Veronica Connor on 27 Dec 1958 in St Edward Church, Pawtucket, RI. Thomas was born on 25 Jul 1933 in Glenwood Ave, Pawtucket, RI. He was christened in St Raymond Church, Providence, RI. He was buried on 3 Apr 2003 in Mt St Mary Cemetery, Pawtucket, RI. 

Tom was born at 253 Glenwood Avenue in the South Woodlawn Section of Pawtucket, RI. Tom attended St Raymond Grammar School, Ninth Street and Highland Avenue in Providence for eight years. He attended St Raphael Academy and graduated from West High School both in Pawtucket. After serving in the US Army he graduated Providence College with a degree in education. He was a teacher for one year in the Barrington, RI school system. He served in the Military Police, US Army, on the Pacific side of the Panama Canal Zone for two years at the end of the Korean War. He was an Army cook for a portion of his tour of duty. He was a social worker and an investigator for the State of RI. He has resided on Warwick Road in Pawtucket, RI during his work and retirement life. After retirement he enjoyed a daily walk the length of the Blackstone Boulevard in Providence.
   "Hold it right there! I swim three times weekly. I'm the principal driver in this household. We attend church daily. I'm an avid reader and traveler. He (referring to himself) wrote letters. He was up on current events. He had a garden. He saw good in everyone. He continues to love and serve God. He was a CCD (Catholic Christian Doctrine) teacher. He was charitable to all, not just his children. He was a Renaissance man. He was crowned 'King Of Pawtucket' at a seniors dance in 1999," Tom McGill describing himself in a 22 Jul 1999 letter.

Thomas and Anne had the following children:
   + 39 F i. Mary Anne McGill was born on 27 Dec 1959. 
   + 40 F ii. Paula McGill was born on 26 Apr 1961. 
      41 M iii. Francis McGill was born on 5 May 1962 in Providence, RI. 

Frank lives in East Providence, RI; is single; and works for the Distribution Department of the Providence Journal. He is an avid fisherman.

  + 42 F iv. Ellen McGill was born on 22 Aug 1963. 
  + 43 F v. Regina McGill was born on 22 Jan 1965. 
     44 M vi. Thomas Patrick McGill was born on 11 Jul 1968 in Pawtucket, RI. 

Tom has worked for a few years traveling for a hotel chain installing, upgrading and training personnel on computers systems. He is not married and has lived in San Francisco, Atlanta, New York State and again Atlanta. He also attends Oglethorpe in Atlanta, GA.

  + 45 M vii. Stephen McGill was born on 16 Jun 1969. 

 

34. Rose Treacy (Margaret Rigby, William, ___) was born in 1938 in St Joseph Hosp, Providence, RI. Rose married Robert G MacLure in Rhode Island. 

"We do know that on Bob's mother's side he had a great grandfather who was an Indian from Quebec, , , Three Rivers or somthing like that." Rose Treacy-MacLure, 28 Jan 2003

They had the following children:

   + 47 M ii. Kenneth MacLure .
   + 48 M iii. Bruce MacLure .

 

Fifth Generation

36. Nora Ryan (Stephen Ryan, Rose Rigby, William, ___) was born in 1963. 

Nora was graduated with a Bachelors of Science in Computer Science and Engineering from Massachusettes Institute of Technology and went on to earn a Masters in Business Administration after 
relocating to and working in CA. She remains involved in high technology.




39. Mary Anne McGill (Anne Louise Treacy, Margaret Rigby, William, ___) was born in 1959 in Pawtucket, RI. 

Mary Anne has lived in the San Francisco, CA area since about 1985. She is single and is employed by the World Affairs Council in San Francisco.




40. Paula McGill (Anne Louise Treacy, Margaret Rigby, William, ___) was born in 1961 in Pawtucket, RI. Paula married Andrew Emanuel Andersen III son of Andrew Emanuel Andersen Jr on 26 Mar 1988 in Chapel By Sea, Newport, RI. 

Paula is a homemaker for her husband and three children. Andrew is a graduate of St Lawrence in NY. He works in banking.




42. Ellen McGill (Anne Louise Treacy, Margaret Rigby, William, ___) was born in 1963 in Pawtucket, RI. Ellen married Gregory Thaddeus Murphy son of Francis R Murphy and Virginia Louise Perini on 31 May 1986 in St Leo's Church, Pawtucket, RI. 

Ellen, a graduate of Rhode Island College, was a human resource analyst prior to marriage. She is now a homemaker for her husband and five children. Greg was the general manager of his family's Howard Johnson Motor Lodge in downtown Pawtucket., RI and the owner/manager of a restaurant on Cape Cod, MA. He is now the owner/manager of The Fish Factory on Newport Avenue in Pawtucket, RI.  He is a graduate of University of New Hampshire.



43. Regina McGill (Anne Louise Treacy, Margaret Rigby, William, ___) was born in 1965 in Pawtucket, RI. Regina married Robert Peyton Crone son of Charles William Crone SR and Mildred on 17 Oct 1987 in Rose Garden, Raleigh, NC. 

Regina, a graduate of North Carolina State University, is a homemaker for her husband and five children in Raleigh, NC . Prior to her marriage, she was employed in the advertising department of Hudson Belk Co in Raleigh. NC. Father George Kloster of Greensboro, NC and Rev. Jerry Smith of Fuquay-Varina, NC officiated at her wedding in the Rose Garden in Raleigh. Bob is the pilot of his own aircraft. He is the owner/ publisher of a trade newspaper in the Raleigh, NC area. He is a graduate of North Carolina State University.




45. Stephen McGill (Anne Louise Treacy, Margaret Rigby, William, ___) was born in 1969 in Pawtucket, RI. Stephen married Nelia F Soares daughter of Eduardo P Soares and Ines C on 16 Sep 1995 in st Anthony Ch, Pawtucket, RI. 

Stephen works for a stock brokerage company in Providence, RI. Nelia is a homemaker for her husband and two children.
