The ship “State of Nevada” has Charles as born about 1861 in Ireland, coming to NYC on 20 May 1881 leaving from Warrington, Cheshire England where John was living with his family. It is possible Nellie was actually born in New York like Ellen was, and the information may be wrong on the Census. Dates and places between the census and the ship’s manifests are often wrong due to the fact that information is often relayed to the person writing down the information, sometimes second-hand. As many people of the era were unable to read and write, they would not have been likely to correct the persons writing down the information.

Manifests for the “City of Chester” shows Thomas Phillips, born about 1858, of Ireland as a passenger on 2 May 1881. A manifest of the same ship shows that on 3 Sep 1880, a Mary Phillips and a Mary Halligan are both onboard. Oddly enough they both were born about 1859. The “City of Chester’, is the same ship that Thomas’ older brother John would come over on in 1886.

MICHAEL J. PHILLIPS JR., 64, of Park Avenue, assistant chief of labor relations at the state Mental Health and Retardation Hospital for 20 years, retiring in June, and previously a service representative at the Department of Employment Security, died Thursday at home. He was the husband of Theresa M. "Terry" (Leblanc) Phillips.
Born in Providence, a son of the late Michael J. Phillips Sr. and Alice (Imbeault) Philips, he had lived in Cranston for 37 years. He attended RIC.
He was president of the Cranston Jaycees and was selected 'Man of the Year.' He was a member of Meeting Street School Parents Association and served as president. He was also a member of Ocean State Villagers.
Besides his wife, he leaves a son, Michael J. Phillips III of Warwick; four daughters, Denise M. Cohen of West Covina, Calif., Deborah A. Moore, Diane C. McCabe and Donna L. Siller, all of Warwick, and eight grandchildren. He was the brother of the late James J. and Francis J. Phillips.
The funeral will beheld Monday at 9 a.m. from the Jones-Walton-Sheridan Funeral Home, 1895 Broad St., with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 at St. William Church, Pettaconsett Ave., Warwick. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery, West Greenwich. (corrected)
