Searching for Family    General & Local Queries

I have recently discovered that Bravenet is now limiting the number of messages that can be stored in their message forum archives. We were about to exceed that limit, and may very well have lost a few messages since they implemented this change. However, I also discovered that the messages in the forum had been quite messed up by Bravenet and we exceeded the limit because they had duplicated a significant number of messages. I apologize for this inconvenience. In order to avoid any further problems of this sort, I have downloaded all the oldest messages that were stored on Bravenet that were posted in 2001, and have added these Message Archives pages to the site. There is now plenty of room for new messages. These downloaded messages have been divided into two categories, those queries related to specific family name(s) and those messages that were requesting general information about Southern New England resources or research topics. Family messages are listed alphabetically by the primary family name or first name listed in the case where multiple names are mentioned. General queries are filed by the date on which they were posted.

Message: Sure now and I wish the was a four leaf clover to choose as an image, but you can't loose by going with the smilly face.
Alright.. I am looking for the descendants and/or Ancestors of John Gayton. His parents were Thomas & (??? ???)Gayton of Tipperary, Ireland, I believe that Thomas had a brother named Patrick Gayton who finally settled in New Brunswick and has descendants in Maine...
Thomas was born abt 1750, we believe in Tipperary Ireland somewhere. He had two families, the first with Eleanor he had eight children, the youngest was Thomas, born abt 1875, and died in 1858 at 67 years old. this in my branch of the first Thomas's family. The second family we have no knowledge of the second wife's name, and the first ofspring of this branch was John. In 1816, he left Ireland at an early age and stayed with his half-brother Thomas, in Argyle Nova Scotia, It seemed for a while he was planning to stay there and completed a bargin for some land adjoining his brother's land. He stayed 6 years and then abandoned his plans and moved to New York, and then settled in Pensylvania.
NOW, he had a brother or maybe a half brother with a family living in Boston Massachusetts at about 1840... This is the one I am really interested in learning about.
If he was a brother he would be born after 1791 in Ireland. if a half brother then he would of course have to be born pre 1791.
THanks for reading this and if you have any clues that I could follow, I would appreciate it very much.
Falcon

I will try once more, the first time I hit the wrong button and it went of Blank... the second I wrote what Information I had, and all that was in it was "That's where they lived..."
First I have little info on Katheline Curley, other than she married Lynford B. Goodwin in 1905, and in 1906 her first born Hugh Lynford Goodwinn was born. I believe her to be born around 1975-1985, that would make her 26 at the birth of Hugh but that is all guess work, the 1905 is the only won that is recorded.
Any help would be very much appreciated,

You did not name any places of residence for any of these families. Where did they live? The name Curley is certainly often seen in the RI/MA area. With more specific info we can keep an eye out for them in our searching.

Message: Now I have very little on Katherine Curley, she married (1905) Lynford B. Goodwin, my Info tells me she was "of Massachusetts". Linford, was formally of Argyle, Nova Scotia but now of Massachusetts... his Father Nathan Goodwin (b. September 20, 1855). Their birth dates were some where between 1875 & 1885. I hope this helps, of the ancestors of Lynford I got lot's of Info. but she was mentioned only once, and in there they mentioned her son: Hugh Lynford (b. Oct.4th, 1906).
Any help on Lynford or Katherine, would be greatly appreciated.

Roger, In St. Francis Cemetery in Taunton MA (about 35 miles south of Boston) there is a gravestone for the family of Patrick Heffren 1831-1911, and his wife Margaret Toomey 1844-1926. Also a son John T. Heffren 1883-1965, plus some other family members of John. Any connection?
I believe there is another headstone "Heffren" that looks newer. It is in a section of the cemetery that we have not completed yet. But we will be going back to finish soon.

She then married William Boyle, a widower with three children. They moved to Providence, where they are buried. Would love to find more info.

After Rose's death in 1915 the children were sent to various relatives and some of the children legally took the surname Smith. What became of them? Marriages, children, etc. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Subject: Trying to find SHAW orphans - Fall River
Name: Sue

Email: [email protected]
Message: Annie Herbert, daughter of Patrick & Ann, married James Shaw in Fall River MA in 1882. They had 6 children: John J. 1883, Hugh 1886, Jane 1888, James 1890, Herbert 1891, & Annie 1893. Sadly Annie Herbert Shaw died in 1894. James kept and cared for the children, but he became ill and died in 1898, leaving the children orphaned. In the 1900 census, Hugh was living with Mrs. Bridget Mitchell on Alden St., and the record stated that he was adopted. James, Jane ("Jennie"), Herbert and Annie were "inmates" at the St. Vincent's Orphan's Home in Fall River. John's whereabouts has not been found in 1900. In 1905, James was living at Bridget Mitchell's with Hugh. In 1906, John joined his two brothers, living at Bridget Mitchell's. Then Mrs. Mitchell died in July 1906, and none of the brothers are again listed in the Fall River City Directories. I have found no clues to help locate the Shaw orphans, or determine what became of them. Only one older cousin remembers that Annie Shaw may have married a man with a name sounding something like "Chanzy" and moved to New Bedford. Any clues or help would be most appreciated!

Seek info on Fr. Hugh Smyth, resident of Co. Cavan and first pastor of Sacred Heart Church, Taunton, MA in the mid 1800's. He was a student at St. James College, Cavan according to family lore. He was a friend of Owen Friery, my ggrandfather, both in Ireland and US His name appeared in many marriage records in Taunton area in mid 1800's and in many death records. seek his background and his death record.
Thanks for any leads.

Message: HI
I must comment you on the great work on your family website, I am doing some research for information on St. Patrick Church in Fall River, and came across the site.
In comment to the D D Sullivan Funeral Home, I believe (if I have my facts right) the DD sullivan firm was run by Wilfred Driscoll in the 1960's and 1970's untill he became elected MAyor of Fall Rier, MAss. Wilfred later merged with the Waring Funeral Homes in Fall River, Wilfred is still a director with them and I would imagine he can be conatcted for any information regarding the DD Sullivans.
If anyone has information on the Rectories of St Patrick Church on South Main Street Fall River, please advise me.
Regards

Falcon: Sorry to be so late in replying to you information. The only information I have on Briget is that her father was Thomas Curley and her mother's name was Margaret (no surname). Will keep in touch and let you know if I come up with anything else. By the way, if you haven't visited the tormeyclan site, Michael Tormey runs it and one of his ancestors came over with a priest name Curley. Bye for now. Bill

Bill, Linda and I were wandering around Taunton yesterday. Found a Bridget Tormey 1876-1951 at St. Joseph Cemetery, buried with Marotte, McGuinness and McMullen. At St. Mary's we found the gravestone of Margaret Heaphy, d. 1866, erected by husband Daniel. Any connections? Sue

Try, Try, Again. Sorry my first message was interupted. My Great-grandfather, Patrick and his Wife Bridgit (Curley) arrived in Taunton some time after 1847. Grandfather Patrick was born there and married Elizabeth Heaphy, who was born in Ireland. On searching records, in Taunton, I have found four (4) families of Tormeys but can't find connection with any of them. Sue and Linder: Nice site. Was made aware of it by Marybeth (Tormey) Stevens with whom I have been communicating with for many years. She said she had trouble connecting with your site but I got it on the first try? Will be back in near future and will also try your e-mail addresses. BILL
