Descendants of Owen & Mary (Beirne) Winters


First Generation

1. Owen Winters was born in Cashel, Co. Leitrim, Ireland. He died in 1875 in Cashel, Co. Leitrim, Ireland.

In addition to those descendants listed below, Owen also had three blood relatives who settled in Memphis, Tennessee in the 1850s. They were three brothers and were also born in the townland of Cashel. I cannot determine whether the three brothers were his children or his nephews. The most prominent of the three was Patrick M Winters (1836-1895). Frank McGill, 25 Jan 2003 

"Patrick was a prominent citizen of Memphis. During his career, he was a railroad building contractor, Chief of Police for Memphis, Sheriff of Shelby County, elected Justice of Peace in Fifth Civil District, elected Magistrate for the city at large and the building contractor for the levee below Arkansas City for the US Government. The great battle of his life, which he helped to win, was for the enfranchisment of Confederate soldiers, restoring to the Southern veterans the right to have a voice in the management of their own affairs." Memphis Public Ledger, Saturday Evening, 28 Jul 1888. 

Owen married Mary Beirne in Ireland. Mary was born in Roscommon, Ireland. She died in Cashel, Co. Leitrim, Ireland. She was buried in Co. Leitrim, Ireland.

Michael married Catherine Reilly . Catherine was born in Roscommon, Ireland. She died in Cashell, Mohill, Co. Leitrim, Ireland. She was buried in Gorlettra Cemetery, Mohill, Co. Leitrim, Ireland.

16. Thomas Joseph Winters (Michael, Owen) was born on 8 May 1886 in Cashel, Mohill, Co. Leitrim, Ireland. He was christened on 28 May 1886 in Cashel, Co. Leitrim, Ireland. He died in 1965 in Cashel, Mohill, Co. Leitrim, Ireland. He was buried in Gorlettra Cemetery, Mohill, Co. Leitrim, Ireland. 

"Thomas was a parishoner of Bornalcoola Roman Catholic Parish. He was a farmer. The farm was in his family for over three hundred years. He was capable of manufacturing wagon wheels from the hub on out. He quarried his own stone. He was a hunter. The farm comprised 135 acers. He kept steers, horses, hens, sheep and turkeys. He would sell stock at the village fair. He also grew potatoes, turnip, parsnips and onions." Ann Catherine Winters-McGill, Jun 1993.

Thomas married Catherine Flynn daughter of James Flynn and Margaret Fanning in 1916 in Gorvagh, Co. Leitrim, Ireland. Catherine was born in 1883 in Gorvagh, Mohill, Co. Leitrim, Ireland. She died in 1960 in Cashel, Mohill, Co. Leitrim, Ireland. She was buried in Gorlettra Cemetery, Mohill, Co. Leitrim, Ireland. 

Catherine was a member of Bornalcoola Roman Catholic Parish. She made her own dresses.

She died in 1980 in Tooman, Co. Leitrim, Ireland. She was buried in Gorlettra Cemetery, Mohill, Co. Leitrim, Ireland. 

Margaret married Francis Dorrigan in Cashell, Mohill, Co. Leitrim, Ireland. Francis was born in Tooman, Co. Leitrim, Ireland. He died in , Co. Leitrim, Ireland. He was buried in Gorlettra Cem, Mohill, Co. Leitrim, Ireland. Francis was a member of Bornacoola Roman Catholic Parish.

Francis and Margaret had the following children:

24. Ann Catherine Winters (Thomas Joseph, Michael, Owen) was born on 30 Aug 1920 in Cashel, Mohill, Co. Leitrim, Ireland. She was christened in Cloonturk, Bornacoola, Co. Leitrim, Ireland. 

Ann resided in the city of Providence, RI after arrival in the US. She first met her husband, James, at an Eire Society dance on a Saturday night in downtown Pawtucket, RI. She has been a homemaker for her husband and four children. 

Ann married James Patrick McGill son of Francis Joseph McGill Sr. and Bridget Agnes Veronica Connor on 18 Nov 1950 in St Joseph Church, Providence, RI. James was born on 20 Dec 1925 in Pawtucket, RI. 

Jim was born in an apartment at 12 1/2 Kimball Avenue in Pawtucket, RI. That is twelve and one half. Jim graduated St Raymond Grammar School, Providence and St Raphael Academy, Pawtucket, RI in 1943. He served in the US Army toward the end of WWII. Most of his tour was at the military hospital in Waltham, MA. His mother Agnes called him Seamus, pronounced Sha'mus. Jim would take his younger siblings to Coles Farm near Brown University Football Stadium where they would pick apples, ride on the hay wagon, draw water from the well and watch the cows being milked. He would also take them down across North Main Street in Providence, where they would climb up through the stands and watch the Providence Steamrollers play football or Madonna ride his bicycle behind a motorcycle to the cries of "Poosha Madonna." The boys would also walk to the Providence Boys Club on Benefit Street where all of the boys would swim in the nude. This all ocurred in the nineteen thirties.
Before Jim was fourteen he had aa Evening Bulletin newspaper route in Providence. In the "thirties" racetrack owner OHara published an opposition newspaper "The Star Tribune." Jim later sold copies of that also. He was delivering the "Bulletin" on the afternoon of the "38" hurricane. He also delivered on his bicycle Score Sheets (sports) at night to taverns in Pawtucket, for a fellow named Zelinski. He peeled apples (before his sister Marie) for Lady Bettys Pie Shop at the corner of Trenton Street and Glenwood Avenue in Pawtucket. When he turned sixteen he had a part time job driving a delivery truck for Morley's Market on East Avenue near Hope Street. 
Employment: Annaconda Wire & Cable CO, Pawt., RI (plant maintenance); Narraganset Electric Co.; and for more than thirty-five years he was involved with material supply for New England Tel & Tel in Providence. Jim was the treasurer for the NE TEL & TEL employees union in Providence. 
During his working life: he lived at 255 Glenwood Avenue, Pawtucket when first married; purchased a two family house and raised his family on Grand Avenue in Cranston and then purchased a home in Governor Francis Farms in WarwicK. Since his retirement he has lived in Fort Neck in Charlestown, RI. He lives in the house originally built by his father Frank McGill. 
He, under the direction of his wife Ann, cultivates a large garden. He is an avid golfer since retirement. He plays every day. He 
and his wife have visited Ireland quite often since his retirement.
Jim's father, Frank McGill, cleared stone in order to plant the first garden in the early 1960's. He noticed some stones placed in a tight circle and blackened on the inside. The home and lot are within a few hundred feet of Fort Ninigret (aka Niantic Fort). The fort was a site for Indian trade and defense during the periods 1600-1649 and 1700-1740.

James and Ann had the following children:
   37 F i. Ann Marie McGill RN was born on 18 Sep 1951 in Providence, RI. Ann married Hector Antonio Rodriguez MD son of Antonio Salvador Rodriguez and Rosa Echarria-Barea on 8 Dec 1984 in Santa Louisa Ch, San Juan, Puerto Rico. Hector was born in Ponce, Puerto Rico. 

Ann graduated from the Rhode Island Hospital School of Nursing. She is a graduate of the Anesthesia Program at Duke University, Durham, NC. She is a homemaker for her husband and two daughters.
Hector is a radiologist and practiced in MA. He is now the same in NY.

   38 M ii. Steven Michael McGill was born on 10 Dec 1952 in Providence, RI. Steven married Maura Patricia Howard daughter of Thomas Joseph Howard and Betty Ann Lyden on 16 Jun 1979 in St Patrick Ch, Yorktown Heights, NY. Maura was born on 13 Jun 1957 in Bronxville, NY. 

Steven graduated Cranston East High School, Cranston, RI and Colby College, Orono, Maine. He is real estate broker in Charlestown, RI.
Maura is a school teacher and a homemaker for her husband and four children.

   39 F iii. Colleen Patricia McGill RN was born on 14 Mar 1955 in Providence, RI. Colleen married Michael Kelley Dean son of Reginald Longworthy Dean and Mary Ellen Keenan on 28 Apr 1979 in St Timothy Church, Warwick, RI. Michael was born on 11 Apr 1955 in Germany.

Colleen is a graduate of Rhode Island College School of Nursing. she is a nurse and a homemaker for her husband and two children.
Kelley is a graduate of Providence College, Prov., RI.

   40 F iv. Mary Catherine McGill was born on 19 Nov 1958 in Providence, RI. Mary married John Hamilton Lathrop son of Francis Cuming Lathrop Jr and Helen Margaret Coy on 30 Jun 1984 in St Timothy Church, Warwick, RI. John was born on 5 Apr 1957 in Westerly, RI. 

Cathy was a physical therapist at Children's Hospital, Boston ; a graduate of Quinnipiac College in Connecticut. She is a homemaker for her husband and four children.
John graduated Ursinus College in PA; has a master's degree from the University of Oregon. He was a director of health & physical education at North Shore Jewish Community Center, Marblehead, MA. He is now the owner/manager of an insurance business in Westerly, RI.
