James married Anne DOWN, daughter of John DOWN and Anne KING at Atherington on 18 Apr 1790. Anne was baptised at High Bickington on 18 Aug 1761 and was buried at Atherington on 5 Oct 1839.

He married Grace ISAAC, daughter of Philip ISAAC (1774- 1837) and Alice WOOLACOTT (1774-1836), at Atherington on 1 Jul 1834. Grace was baptised at High Bickington on 19 Nov 1815 and was buried at Atherington on 18 Nov 1893.

Ellen BEER, daughter of George BEER (1837- ?) and Ann COUCH (1837- ?), was baptised at Atherington on 1 Feb 1862 and was buried there on 24 Apr 1876.

She married John Brayley GUARD (1819-1891), son of Philip GUARD (1791-1852) and Rebecca BRAYLEY (1797-1880), at Atherington on 14 Apr 1853.

Catherine was baptised at High Bickington on 19 May 1777, and was buried at Atherington on 20 Jul 1854.
Their son, William DOWN, was baptised at High Bickington, Devon on 4 Jul 1815, and according to the Atherington parish register was buried on 27 Mar 1861. He married Betsy DELBRIDGE, daughter of Thomas DELBRIDGE (1783-1841) and Sarah GUARD (1783-1854), in 1841. Betsy was baptised at Atherington on 18 Sep 1822, and was buried there on 2 Feb 1904. William and Betsy's daughter Ann was born in 1845, and was buried at Atherington on 15 Jul 1850. Her sister Anne's burial is not recorded in the Atherington parish register.

James Burnard ARTHUR, son of James ARTHUR and Mary Judd Brent BURNARD, was baptised at North Huish, Devon on 21 Jun 1827, and was buried at Atherington on 30 Oct 1834. His brother, William ARTHUR, was born at Atherington on 4 Jul 1830, baptized at Atherington on 9 Sep 1830, died at Egham, Surrey on 15 Nov 1886, and was buried at Atherington on 19 Nov 1886. William joined the Royal Navy in 1845, served as an officer on several different vessels during the Crimean War and the Second Opium War, and was captain of the ironclad HMS Iron Duke from 1871 to 1875. Their brother, John Brent Arthur, was baptised at Atherington on 8 Nov 1837, and was buried there on 13 Aug 1840.
