It was established in August 1989 and has grown enormously since its beginning. Some consider it to be the finest library of its kind for the size county in the state of Texas. This library is manned, managed and totally supported by the Van Zandt Genealogical Society through the efforts of its dedicated members.
Hours of operation are regular and consistent, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays and from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturdays. Volunteer librarians are always on duty to help researchers.
This genealogical library has over 75,000 pieces of research material and adding more each month.This collection includes books, periodicals, quarterlies, microfilm, microfiche, CDs and taped Oral Histories. We have over 512 family histories and over 143 genealogy charts, lineage, abstracts, records, and general materials.
The library has three computers for public genealogy research, wireless internet service, copier/scanner (per copy fee), flatbed scanner for digital photos, and printer (per copy fee). There are three microfilm readers/printers for the extensive collection of county newspapers and old school records.
The genealogical society maintains a massive Surname File at the library as well as Vertical Family Files containing contacts and family research material gathered for the past 10 years. And soon it will have Civil War Files, with individual files for over 500 Civil War veterans that were connected to Van Zandt County.
We are able to do limited research for those who can't visit the Library of Genealogy and Local History in person. There is no charge for this service but we do ask that any copying charges be paid. Please be very specific with your request.

We will only look up your surname on specifically named records. We regret that we don't have the time to answer general requests, such as "all or any info that you have on John Doe." However, we can help you with that as well. We will place your research querie in our award winning quarterly, "Our Heritage." Please put "Lookup" or "Query" in the subject line of your email. When submitting a query to be placed in the society's quarterly "Our Heritage," always include your mailing address. Researchers are also welcome to write the Van Zandt County Genealogical Society, P.O. Box 1388, Canton, TX, 75103, for information, enclosing a self addressed, stamped envelope. When writing either by mail or by email, please be very specific with your request.

The Library of Genealogy and Local History is located between Grove and Terrell Street at Hwy 19 in Canton, Texas. To get to the library from out of county or out of state, coming from I-20, get off at Hwy 19 and go south to Canton.
