HUM BANQUET ENJOYED BY ALL

Over 185 enjoyed catfish and patriotic music at the Annual Membership Meeting and Banquet on Thursday, April 18, 2002.

After electing Connie Duke, Mary Slaughter, Patt Lindsey, and Sara Dumas, and reelecting Jim Daniels and Tom Mitchell to their second terms, the membership enjoyed the strains of the diverse music found in Upshur County.

The Homeward Bound Gospel group sang Circuit Riding Preacher, Palms of Victory, Come and Dine, and Climbing up the Mountain and ended with a patriotic medley.  Royce, Betty, Darrell, and Shellie Cook join with Tim Anderson and David Tackett to form the group.

The Harmonettes, led by David Robertson on the keyboard, returned for a second visit. This year Gwen Tuel, Georgia Duke, Pat McPeek, and Linda Aills sang I've Been Changed and Someone Who Cares, before joining Lindley Aills in That Old Ragged Flag. At the conclusion of their segment, the audience joined in singing It's a Grand Ol' Flag

Featured performers for the night were Brock Whatley, Bill Ruston, Trey Wolf, and Shawn Clark, members of Voodoo Healin' of Longview. They performed Sidetracked, Me and My Guitar, Hideaway, and Big Legged Woman, all tunes by Freddie King.

The museum plans to host a Blues Festival in honor of Upshur County's native son and influential musician. King and his family left Gilmer for Chicage in 1950. He died in Dallas Dec. 28, 1976, and his wife and children still live in the Metroplex.

The patriotic theme and decorations were developed by the Program and Activities Committee, Connie Duke, Pat Maddox, Amy Patterson, Lynda Phillips, and David Robertson, chairman.

At the May board meeting, the board elected Jim Daniels President, William Butler First Vice President, Tom Mitchell Second Vice President, Robbie Bruns Treasurer, Sara Dumas Secretary, and Rickie Gipson and Patt Lindsey Executive Committee at Large.
