Civil War Veterans Memorial

Contributed by Mike Patterson

This memorial project identifies both Union and Confederate veterans of the Civil War who lived, owned property, were active members of a church, or were buried within a four mile radius, centered on Pleasant Run Baptist Church in Colleyville, Texas. This monument to their memory is being erected at the church.

It takes the form of three upright granite tablets engraved with names on both sides, along with an upright marble dedicatory stone explaining the markers.

When you are passing by Pleasant Run Baptist Church, please take a moment to stop and see what we’ve done. The first tablet includes the names of several area pioneers for whom streets and communities are named, including Dr. Lilburn H. Colley, William L. Hurst, Felix G. Bransford, Harvey R. Sparger, and many others.

My collaborators in this project are my mother, Doris Jo Patterson, and Jimmy Reynolds, a lifelong friend. The three of us have lived a total of more than one hundred fifty years in this community, and we are deeply interested in preserving its past. My mother’s family settled in Colleyville in 1879, and the Reynoldses arrived in 1902.
