Fort Worth Groceryman For Nearly Fifty Years

A native of New Brunswick, Canada, Arthur Seeley Dingee came to the United States in the early 1880s, living several years on the Pacific Coast before moving to Fort Worth in 1886. His first job was with the Turner and McClure Grocery.

In 1877 he married Miss "Pink" Holloway, daughter of former County Commissioner H. C. Holloway. Dingee had purchased McClure's interest in the grocery store and after J. H. Turner died in 1899, became sole owner. At one time, there were several branch stores, but eventually they were consolidated into one - the store located on West Seventh Street in Fort Worth. Dingee was very active in civic affairs and held long-time memberships in the Levee Board, Elks Lodge and the Kiwanis Club.

He suffered a fatal heart attack as he was waiting for breakfast to be served. Funeral services will be held Friday at First Christian Church, Rev. L. D. Anderson, pastor, and Sidney L. Samuels, attorney, officiating. Long-time employees of the store will serve as pall bearers and burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery.

Survivors are his widow, two sons, Henry and George, two daughters, Mrs. W. B. King, Jr. and Mrs. Ann Cox, seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. [Fort Worth Star-Telegram, Evening Ed., Feb. 25, 1932]

Mrs. Dingee died in August 1939, age 77. Her funeral services were conducted at Harveson & Cole Funeral Home, Rev. L. D. Anderson and Sidney L. Samuels officiating, as they had done for her husband's service. Pall bearers were again long time store employees. Survivors included sons Henry and George, daughters, Mrs. Ann Cox and Mrs. W. B. King, Jr., all of Fort Worth, seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

When Mrs. Dingee (nee Pink Holloway) was born, the family lived on the present site of the Majestic Theater and Colonel Holloway owned a farm where Major Ripley Arnold is said to have camped at one time. It was supposedly the location for the election which moved the county seat from Birdville to Fort Worth. [Fort Worth Star-Telegram, August 3, 1939]
