Kress
United Methodist Church - When the Methodist Church at
Kress was painted, cows licked the paint off and died, probably
from lead poisoning. As a result, a barbed wire fence was
put around the church and parsonage. The church still stands
at the same site, but has been remodeled. |

Tulia
First United Methodist Church - In 1891 the Rev. R. M.
Morris with the aid of Rev. Jerome Harelson, the Presiding
Elder, organized the first Methodist Church. Services were
held in the one room school house which was on the site of
the first red brick school building. The Sundays were alternated
by the Baptist, Methodist and Presbyterian churches.
In 1897 the first church building was erected, made possible
by the contributions of members of every denomination. Gifts
from fifty cents to a dollar were made, coming from as far
away as Alabama. The entire community was canvassed by Mrs.
J. W. Rush and Mrs. Sam Loftin. They traveled by horse and
buggy from house to house to secure the sacrificial donations.
The gifts consisted of money, labor and the hauling of the
lumber from Amarillo. This church was built at a cost of five
hundred dollars. In 1904 a steeple was added and a bell hung
in the steeple. In 1910 the church was remodeled, making it
larger and replacing the steeple with two cupolas. By 1927
the congregation had outgrown the building, and it was replaced
with a new brick building (below). |

New First United Methodist Church - When the congregation
outgrew the original wooden frame church, a new brick church
was built and completed in 1929. A new sanctuary and educational
building were added later, and this building remodeled inside
to serve as a fellowship hall and youth center. |
