Carmen Alvarez, 54, died Friday, May 13, 2005, in Amarillo.  Prayer services will be at 7 p.m. today in Kornerstone Funeral Directors Chapel. Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday in the funeral home chapel. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery.  Mrs. Alvarez was born April 10, 1951, in Hayes County. She grew up in Tulia and attended schools there. After high school, she attended Amarillo College for a couple of years. She married Joe Alvarez on Nov. 2, 1984, in Tulia. She worked at a number of jobs, but was mainly a homemaker and housewife.  She was preceded in death by a sister, Jovita Rodriguez and her mother, Jovita Zuniga.  Survivors include her husband; six children, Rosie Ramirez, Toni Ramirez, Bibo Ramirez, Joey Alvarez and Amos Alvarez, all of Tulia, and Eric Ramirez of Livingston; her father, Seledonio Zuniga Sr. of Tulia; four brothers, Jesse Zuniga, Jimmy Zuniga and Federico Zuniga, all of Tulia, and Seledonio Zuniga Jr. of Amarillo; three sisters, Mary Ann Madrigal and Silvia Rosales, both of Tulia, and Lucy Cansino of Plainview; and nine grandchildren.  Amarillo Globe-News, 15 May 2005.

Alfred "Ham" Hamblen, 77, died Sunday, May 15, 2005.  Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. today in First United Methodist Church in Happy with the Rev. Tom Stribling and the Rev. Mike Kuhlman of the Arena Church in Happy officiating. Private family burial will be in Wayside Cemetery in Wayside by Holley Funeral Home of Canyon.  Mr. Hamblen was born April 13, 1928, in Canyon to Alfred Sterling Hamblen and Eutha Mae Strawn Hamblen. He married Geraldine Darst on Oct. 2, 1954, in Canyon. He was retired from Swisher County Feedlot and was a longtime aviator. Mr. Hamblen served in the Army in Korea in the 279th Regiment, 45th Infantry Division, and received a Purple Heart. He was a member of First Methodist Church in Happy.  He was preceded in death by a brother, Donald Eugene Hamblen.  Survivors include two sons, Kenneth Hamblen of Happy and Tracy Hamblen of Dallas; two daughters, Vicki Hamblen of Happy and Cathy Ledford and husband, Kenny, of Amarillo; two sisters, Harvey Canafax of Davis, Calif., and Carol Kilchriste of Las Vegas; and two brothers, Stewart "Guy" Hamblen and William H. Lloyd Glynn Smith, 82, died Friday, July 15, 2005, in Amarillo.  Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday in First Christian Church with the Rev. Karel Smith, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery by Kornerstone Funeral Directors.  Mr. Smith was born May 13, 1923, in Plainview to Ira Lee and Emily Smith. He grew up in Tulia and graduated from Tulia High School in 1940, where he played cornet in the band. He was an enthusiastic member of the Jersey Cattle Club. He farmed in Swisher County. He operated the Continental Oil Co. Warehouse and delivered fuel to area farmers. He was a faithful member of First Christian Church, where he did not miss a church service in 42 years.  He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Mildred Smith of Tulia and Kathryn Richardson of Borger; and two brothers, Gene Smith and Weldon Smith, both of Glendale, Calif.  Survivors include a sister, Helen Phillips and husband, Herman, of Amarillo; three nephews; and a niece.  Amarillo Globe-News,  17 July 2005.

Catherine Sprawls, 86, died Monday, Jan. 24, 2005.  Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. Friday in First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Rob Lindley, pastor, officiating. Her body was donated to Texas Tech Medical School. Arrangements are by Kornerstone Funeral Directors.  Mrs. Sprawls was born March 10, 1918, in Swisher County. She grew up in Tulia and graduated from Tulia High School. She graduated from West Texas State in Canyon with a degree in English and Spanish. She married J. R. Sprawls. She taught school in New Mexico and Tulia for many years. She was a member of First United Methodist Church.  She was preceded in death by her husband in 1953; a sister, Mattie Devin; and five brothers, Robert Devin, Lloyd Devin, Clayton Devin, Edward Devin and Albert Devin.  Survivors include a daughter, Lana Carlton and husband, Jim, of Tulia; a son, Jan R. Sprawls of Tulia; a granddaughter, Jessica Hatley and husband, Jeremy, of Lubbock; a brother, Delbert Devin and wife, Betty, of Tulia; a sister, Lenna Allen of Canyon; and four sisters-in-law, Mildred Devin of Reno, Nev., Margaret Devin of Canyon, and Virginia Devin and Pat Devin, both of Tulia.  Amarillo Globe-News, 27 January 2005.
