TULIA - Marjorie M. Ballard, 76, died Saturday, May 18, 2002. Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Rob Lindley, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery by Wallace Funeral Home. Mrs. Ballard was born June 19, 1925, in Childress to Melvin A. and Mary Mertle Cox Martin. She graduated from Community Center School. She and W.B. Ballard Jr. were married April 11, 1946, in Amarillo. They made their home in Vigo Park and Tulia. She was a homemaker and member of First United Methodist Church of Tulia. She had lived in Dumas since 1994 to be near her niece, Shirley Wells and husband, Clyde, and her nephew, Ed Garner. She was preceded in death by her husband on Oct. 27, 1988; her parents; a sister, Mary Ruth Garner; and two brothers, Jesse Eric Martin and William Hubert Martin. TULIA - Ray Barbour, 76, died Friday, March 8, 2002. Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday in First Baptist Church with the Rev. Charles Davenport, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery by Wallace Funeral Home of Tulia. Mr. Barbour was born Aug. 18, 1925, in Spearman. He married Lucille Jennings on Sept. 2, 1948, in Tulia. He moved to Tulia from Dumas in 1936 and graduated from Tulia High School. He graduated from Amarillo Business College and served in the Third Army in Europe under Gen. Patton during World War II. After his discharge he returned to Tulia and established a Propane Distribution Business with his brother, Van Barbour. In 1956 they purchased the Phillips 66 wholesale gas, diesel and oil distribution company from their father, now called Barbour Brothers. In 1974 he bought his brother's part of the business. He was recently recognized by Phillips 66 as the second longest independently owned distributorship in the company with 55 years of service. He was a member of First Baptist Church for more than 50 years. He had served on the Tulia City Council and served as camp chairman for the Salvation Army to select underprivileged kids to go to Salvation Army Camp. He raised Simmental Cattle and was a member of the American Simmental Association and the Texas Simmental Association. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Van Earl Barbour; and a sister, Annabelle Kirkpatrick. Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Susan Howell of Canyon; a son, Todd Barbour of Amarillo; a brother, Dr. Larry Barbour of Quanah; five grandchildren, Shana Weaver of London, England, Jason Howell of College Station and Cooper Barbour, Keldon Barbour and Payton Barbour, all of Amarillo; and two great-grandchildren, Lauren Weaver and Rachel Weaver, both of London.  Amarillo Globe-News, 11 March 2002.

TULIA - Ernesto Bernal, 61, died Friday, March 22, 2002. Rosary will be at 7 p.m. today in the Wallace Funeral Home Chapel of Tulia. Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Church of the Holy Spirit with John Salazar-Jimenez, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery. Mr. Bernal was born March 10, 1941, in Artesia Wells. He married Eva Cardona in Asherton on April 13, 1959. He attended elementary schools in Artesia Wells and later moved to Del Rio where he attended high school. From 1959 to 1960 he worked at Best Fertilizer in Plainview. He owned Exxon Gas Station from 1960 to 1964 in Plainview. He managed the Plantation Liquor Store on the Swisher/Castro County line from 1964 to 1970. He owned and operated Ernie's Bar-B-Q in Tulia from 1970 to the time of his death. He was a member of the Church of the Holy Spirit. Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Hilda Hernandez of Tulia; four sons, Ramiro Bernal and Bert Bernal, both of Tulia, Hector Bernal of Aurora, Ill., and Richard Bernal of Amarillo; his mother, Concepcion Bernal of Asherton; two brothers, Oscar Bernal and Alex Bernal, both of Asherton; six sisters, Delia Ruiz, Minerva Banda, Alicia Bernal, Gloria Herrera, Rosa Bustamenta and Elma Guiterrez, all of Asherton; six granddaughters; two grandsons; and two great-granddaughters.  Amarillo Globe-News, 25 March 2002.

HAPPY - Acie Dell Boyd, 88, died Monday, April 1, 2002, in Amarillo. Services will be at 3 p.m. today in First United Methodist Church of Happy with the Rev. Curtis House, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Happy Cemetery by Brooks Funeral Directors of Canyon. Mrs. Boyd was born Dec. 2, 1913, in Snyder. She attended school at Snyder and graduated in 1932. She married Copus Boyd in 1937 at Snyder, where they made their home until 1947. They then bought a home east of Happy and lived there for 40 years. She moved to Happy after the death of her husband in 1981. She was active in her church and community. HAPPY - Dorotha "Dot" Bryan, 93, died Sunday, Dec. 8, 2002. Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Brooks Funeral Directors Chapel with Kevin Naillieux and Fred Fite officiating. Burial will be in Dreamland Cemetery. Mrs. Bryan was born Oct. 24, 1909, in Griggsville, Ill., to Frank and Charlotta Hobson Young. She married Homer Bryan in Denver on Dec. 3, 1928, and they moved to Happy where they farmed and ranched. They were married for 53 years. She was preceded in death by her husband on Feb. 1, 1981; a son, Ed Bryan, on Dec. 16, 2001; two grandsons, Montye Bryan, in February 1997, and Kenny Bryan, in December 1997; and a granddaughter, Sylvia Bassett, in September 1957. Survivors include two daughters, Laura Bassett and husband, Gordon, of Alpine and Edna Bassett and husband, Bruce, of Happy; two sons, Harold Bryan and wife, Cherilee, of Huntsville, Ark., and Roy Bryan and wife, Arlene, of Happy; a sister, Lena Smith of Denver; a brother, Floyd Young of Denver; 16 grandchildren; 53 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.  Amarillo Globe-News, 9 December 2002.

TULIA - Dr. David Brian Burgess, 48, of Tyler died Wednesday, Aug. 7, 2002. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday in First United Methodist Church in Tulia with the Rev. Rob Lindley, pastor, and the Rev. Ernie McGaughey, retired Methodist minister, officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery by Wallace Funeral Home. Dr. Burgess was born in Canyon on Sept. 7, 1953. He was a family practice and emergency room doctor. Survivors include three sons, Dustin Craig Burgess of Tyler, Devin Scott Burgess of Merchant Marine Academy Kingsport, N.Y., and Donovan Brian Burgess of Tyler; his parents, David and Mary Burgess of Tulia; and a brother, Don Layton Burgess of Flower Mound. HAPPY - Virginia Ann "Jenny" Roberts Cox, 58, died Saturday, April 6, 2002, in Phoenix. Mrs. Cox passed away at the Mayo Clinic in Phoenix following a lengthy illness. She was born to Houston and Lora Shannon Roberts Oct. 13, 1943, in McAdoo. She was a graduate of Hereford High School in 1962. She married James Sherman Cox Jr. on Dec. 9, 1965, in Hereford. She was a member of Hereford Church of Christ. Mary Victory Harman Elliff, 83, died Sunday, July 7, 2002.  Services will be at 3 p.m. today in First Baptist Church with the Rev. Charles Davenport officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery by Wallace Funeral Home.  Mrs. Elliff was born in Armistice Day, Nov. 11, 1918, in Swisher County, the daughter of Virgil Lafayette Harman and Esther Valeria Matilda Bebermeyer Harman. She married J. Chester Elliff on Dec. 19, 1936, in Tulia.  She went to school at Union Hill School and graduated from Canyon High School in 1934. She attended Canyon Normal College and Texas Technological College.   She was in partnership with her husband in the operation of Victory Jersey Farm. They bred and developed registered Jersey cattle known and marketed worldwide.  This dairy herd was recognized as outstanding in the nation for milk production and 1,000-pound butterfat records. The Elliffs were recognized as distinguished breeders by American Jersey Cattle Club and the dairy industry. They received the coveted Master Breeder Award from the A. J. C. C. in 1958.   he always had an open door for visitors and leaves a multitude of loving and devoted friends.   Survivors include her husband; two sons, John H. and Gary P. of Tulia; five daughters, Catherine Hoodenpyle, Vicky Driskill, Lorene Cole and Dana Sullivan, all of Lubbock, and Becky Tucker of Tulia; 19 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; a brother, Otis Harman of Tulia; and a sister, Dorothy Donaldson of Farwell.  Amarillo Globe-News, 9 July 2002.

TULIA - Josephine Feelings, 93, died Tuesday, Feb. 19, 2002, in Amarillo. Prayer vigil will be at 7 p.m. Friday in Wallace Funeral Home Chapel. Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in Church of the Holy Spirit with the Rev. John Salazar-Jimenez, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery. Mrs. Feelings was born April 17, 1908, in Dyer, Ind. She grew up in Castro County and attended schools there. She was a resident of Swisher County for 60 years. She worked for Swisher Memorial Hospital and Star Grain Elevator/Hipp Brothers. After she retired she was a caregiver to the elderly in Tulia. She was a founding member of Church of the Holy Spirit. She married Hardy Feelings on Aug. 25, 1937, in Tulia. She was preceded in death by her husband on Feb. 28, 1980; and a son and daughter-in-law, Vincent and Doris Black. Survivors include a granddaughter, Cecilia Langdon of Amarillo; a grandson, Nick Black of Fritch; four sisters, Justina McCurry and Calista Huber, both of Amarillo, Martina Millward of Lytle and Imelda Cook of Hyland, Mich.; a brother, Charles Heck of Dalhart; five great-grandchildren; three step-great-grandsons; and nine great-great-grandchildren.  Amarillo Globe-News, 21 February 2002.

HAPPY - Beulah Cox Hurst, 90, died Thursday, May 9, 2002, in Amarillo. Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday in Memorial Chapel in Happy with the Rev. Curtis House, pastor of First United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Happy Cemetery by Brooks Funeral Directors. Mrs. Hurst was born June 24, 1911, in Arney, to Charlie and Mettie Chestnut Cox. She married Raymond H. Hurst in 1929 at Clovis, N.M., and settled in New Mexico where she lived until 1933. They then moved to the Arney community until 1938 when they moved to the Jowell area. In 1943 they moved to Happy and lived there until the death of her husband. She had lived in Amarillo the past 15 years. She had a love for her family and her quilting and enjoyed staying active in her church. She was a member of First United Methodist Church of Happy. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1986; and three sisters. Survivors include a daughter, Phyllis Evans of Amarillo; a son, Shi Hurst of Umbarger; seven grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. The family suggests memorials be to Happy Cemetery Association, P.O. Box 216, Happy, TX 79042. Maria Luisa Medina Luera, 92, died Sunday, Oct. 13, 2002.  Rosary was said Monday night. Services will be at 3:30 p.m. today in Church of the Holy Spirit Catholic Church. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery by Wallace Funeral Home.  Mrs. Luera was born Aug. 19, 1910, in Chihuahua, Mexico. She married Benjamin Luera in 1927 at San Angelo. She was a member of Church of the Holy Spirit and was a Crucillista and a Guadalupana.  She was raised in Texas and moved to Tulia from San Angelo in 1947. She received a recognition from the bishop for her past work in the church.  She was preceded in death by her husband on Dec. 10, 1978; a son, Augustin Luera; and two brothers, Raul Medina and Rodolpho Medina.  Survivors include five daughters, Amelia Suiter of Amarillo, and Guadalupe Luera, Micaela Ramirez, Ophelia Garcia and Maria Elena Ontiveros, all of Tulia; four sons, Roberto Luera, Manuel Luera and Benjamin Luera Jr., all of Tulia, and Pedro Luera of Guymon, Okla.; 19 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.  Amarillo Globe-News, 15 October 2002.
