| Armstrong, Mrs. Fred |
Mrs. Fred
Armstrong, 52 years old, Tulia, died Thursday of last week.
Funeral services were held last Saturday at the Church of
Christ. Curtis Camp, minister, conducted the services. Burial
was in Rose Hill Cemetery. Mrs. Armstrong was born in
Swisher County. She moved to Gray County for a while then moved
back here. She had lived here about 30 years. Mrs. Armstrong was
a member of the Church of Christ. Survivors include her
husband and two daughters, Mrs. Jack Hood, Tulia; Mrs. Daniel
Lepine, Norfolk, VA; a sister, Mrs. George Van Cott, Wassiac,
NY; two brothers, King C. Faulkner, San Antonio; and Rhea
Faulkner, Camp Verde, AZ; and two granddaughters. The

| Atkinson, Winnie Mae |
Miss Winnie Mae
Atkinson, 49 years old, died in Tulia Tuesday of this week.
Funeral services were scheduled Thursday afternoon at 3:30
o'clock in the First Baptist Church. Rev. C. G. Sewell, pastor,
was to conduct the services. Burial was to be in Rose Hill
Cemetery under direction of Wallace Funeral Home. Miss
Atkinson lived with her mother, Mrs. W. M. Atkinson, the only
survivor known in Tulia. Miss Atkinson was a private teacher of

| Barron, W. O. (Bill) |
W. O. (Bill) Barron of Tatum, NM was buried at Tatum last
Thursday following his death November 7 in a Brownfield
hospital. He was a brother of Mrs C. C. Hyatt of Tulia and Mrs.
L. H. Odom of Vigo Park. He is a former resident of Vigo
Park and was well known at Tulia and Silverton where he had many

| Bivens, Albert |
One of Swisher County's best known pioneers is dead. Albert
Bivens died at his home in Tulia late Wednesday night, December
13, following a long illness. He was born November 14,
1879, in Newport, Jack County. He attended Polytechnic College
in Ft. Worth. He came to Swisher County with his parents, the
late Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Bivens, in 1891. He was married April 4,
1900 to MISS HATTIE SCOTT, also a member of a well known pioneer
Swisher family. They celebrated their golden wedding anniversary
last April. Spending all his life as a rancher, Mr. Bivens
acquired extensive holdings in Swisher County, Briscoe, Castro,
Armstrong and Palmer Counties and in New Mexico. He recently
disposed of the Parmer County and New Mexico property. Even
during his illness he never lost interest in ranch activities.
Survivors include his widow; two sons, Ray Bivens and Delbert
Bivens, both of Tulia; a daughter Mrs. Howard Hall of Gladwater;
five grandchildren, Mrs. R. H. Miller, Jr., Mrs. Frank Henry
Cullum, Billy Mace Bivens, James Hall and Donna Bess Hall, and
two great grandchildren, Jimmy Ray and Deborah Jean Cullum.
Funeral services were conducted Friday afternoon at the First
Methodist Church with Rev. Bill Thompson officiating. Burial was
in Rose Hill Cemetery under the direction of Wallace Funeral
Home. Active pallbearers were Dick O'Daniel, Marvin
Carlile, J. Ross Noland, Frank Cobb, Bob Ward and Richard Adams.
Honorary pallbearers were Jim
Cleveland, J. C. Cowan, J. W. McGlaun, C. C. Poff, G. C.
Hutchison, J. A. Hutchison, Ewell Grigg, R. G. Clennin, R J.
Stallings, S. F. Flores, J. L. Cantrell, S. M. Rodgers, Will
Ward, R. E. Leonard, Elvis Ward and L. G. Conner. The

| Blair, Ray |
Ray Blair, Tulia resident until 1943, died at his home in
Amarillo Friday afternoon following a year's illness. He was
bedfast only a short time before his death.
He was born October 3, 1904 in Erath County. He moved to Tulia
Jan. 1, 1923, where he farmed. He was employed by Tulia Wheat
Growers, Inc. until he moved to Amarillo. He was married
in May 1935 to MISS GRACE DAMS at Plainview. Funeral
services were conducted by Rev. G. H. Bryant, pastor of Temple
Baptist Church in Amarillo of which he was an active member, at
Boxwell Bros. Funeral Home. Burial was in Rose Hill Cemetery,
Tulia. Survivors besides
the widow, include his mother, Mrs. A. E. Blair, Tulia; two
brothers, Arvil A. Blair, Amherst, and Olin P. Blair of Lubbock;
and two sisters, Mrs. E. L. West, Masterson and Mrs. D. D. Crow,

| Brian, Mrs. K. D. |
Funeral services
for Mrs. K. D. Brian, 89, were conducted in the First Baptist
Church of Lorenzo, July 4. Mrs. Brian's five minister sons
officiated and pallbearers were her nephews. Rev. W. P.
(Ted) Brian, former pastor of the First Baptist Church, Happy,
now of Plains, are among her survivors. Mr. and Mrs. Bryan Vie
and Floretta attended the funeral at Lorenzo.

| Schooling, Carroll Wright |
Carroll Wright
Schooling, 31 years old, was Tulia's first polio fatality this
summer. Mr. Schooling died
last Sunday afternoon in the hospital at Plainview. He had been
placed in an iron lung. The body was taken
by train to Miller, Mo. for burial. It was sent last Tuesday
morning by Wallace Funeral Home. Mr. Schooling
became ill Wednesday of last week. He was placed under care of a
doctor Thursday and was taken to the polio ward of the Plainview
hospital Friday afternoon. Mr. Schooling had
worked for Francis Burgess on the farm about five miles
northeast of Tulia, about two years. Survivors include his
widow, a son and his parents, Mr. and Mrs. R. C. Schooling of

| Shafer, Mrs. C. J. |
Mrs. Eppy
Frances Shafer, 84 years old, Tulia, died last week in the
Littlefield hospital after a few days of illness. Funeral services were held at 2:30
o'clock Friday afternoon at the Primitive Baptist Church.
Rev. S. J. Ellis assisted by Elder William Fox conducted the
services.
Mrs. Shafer,
who died June 14, came to Swisher county in 1920. She and
her family lived around Tulia and engaged in farming until
1923 when they moved into town. She was
married to C. J. Shafer in 1883. Thirteen children, eleven
boys and four girls (sic) were born to them. Mr. Shafer died
in February 1928. Mrs. Shafer
joined the Conrad Primitive Baptist Church in April 1898.
Survivors are seven children: Mrs. J. H. Mariner, Littlefield;
Mrs. S. P. Atchley, Tulia; Mrs. J. H. Windham, Amarillo; H. H.
Shafer, Wichita Falls; A. O. Shafer, Milan, Texas; H. L. Shafer,
Tulia; Dr. A. Shafer, San Leandro, Calif, and thirty‑five
grandchildren, thirty‑three great grandchildren and three

| Shannon, Mrs. John |
Funeral services for
Mrs. Jewell F. Shannon are scheduled for Friday afternoon at
2:30. Rev. Scott Crawford will conduct the rites at the Turkey
school auditorium. Burial will be in Dreamland Cemetery, Turkey,
under the direction of Wallace Funeral Home. Mrs. Shannon died
early Wednesday morning in Swisher county hospital after an
illness of several months. She was born Jan.
23, 1910 in Addington, Okla. She moved with her parents to
Turkey in 1913. She was married to JOHN SHANNON in Turkey Dec.
4, 1925. The family moved to Tulia in 1945 where
they operated a cafe until August of this year.
Survivors include the husband; a son, John Harold, a student at
Baylor University; two daughters, Mrs. Ola B. Nickelson of
Amarillo and Mrs. Billie Ruth Bivens, Hereford; her parents, Mr.
and Mrs. Joe Parker of Turkey; one brother, Herbert Parker of
Ropesville; and two grandchildren. The Tulia Herald,

| Shuping, D. M. |
D. M. Shuping, 76
years old, Kress, died Friday of last week in Swisher County
hospital. Funeral services
were held last Sunday afternoon at the Kress Baptist Church.
Rev. Russell Pogue, pastor, conducted the services. Burial was
in Rose Hill cemetery, Tulia. Mr. Shuping
suffered a stroke about three months ago. He was a member of the
Baptist Church and had been an Odd Fellow. He came to Kress from
Tipton, Okla. He had lived with a son D. L. Shuping, Kress,
since 1940. Survivors include
the widow, Tulia; four sons, D. L. and Robert of Kress; John of
Tulia and Donie of Kress; two daughters Mrs. Beulah Sith, Tuba
and Mrs. Bea Greer, McLean; four grandchildren; and three great

| Smith, Vicki Lynn |
Vicki Lynn Smith,
infant daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Tom D. Smith Jr. died in Tulia
this week as the result of injuries suffered when she was run
over by a car. The child, a year
and 10 mos. old, was injured about 6 o'clock Monday afternoon.
She died shortly after midnight Tuesday. Guy Smith, an uncle,
said she walked behind a car backing out of the driveway of the
Smith residence. Vicki Lynn was
taken to the Swisher County hospital for treatment. Funeral
services were scheduled in the Assembly of God church. Survivors include
the parents, two sisters, Carol Doreen and Linda Kay, and a
brother, Tom D. Smith III. The Tulia Herald, 20

| Spear, William H. |
William H. Spear,
89 years old, died Sunday at the Swisher County hospital. Funeral services
were held Tuesday afternoon in the First Methodist Church. The
services were conducted by Rev. R R Gilbreath of Plainview.
Burial was in Rose Hill Cemetery. Mr. Spear was
hospitalized after he fell Wednesday night of last week and
suffered a broken hip. He came to Swisher
County in 1908 from Clinton, Ind. He was the first county
commissioner in Precinct No 2. He served as a member of the Red
Hill school board and a member of the Board of Stewards of the
Red Hill Methodist Church. He was a member of the Methodist
Church in Happy. Survivors include
a brother, M. W. Spear of Natton, Ill, and five children. Cecil
of Tulia; Charles of Happy; Herman of Lakeview; Mrs. O. H. Spear
of Happy; and Mrs. Lee Wright of Tulia. The Tulia

Mrs. Texanna
Spilman, 79 years old, died at her home in Tulia this week.
Funeral services were held at 2:30 Monday afternoon in the
Methodist Church. Burial was at Silverton. Mrs. Spilman died
about 10:30 Sunday morning after a long illness. She had lived in Tuba
about a year and a half. She moved here from Rock Creek which is
near Silverton. She was born in Denton County. Mrs. Spilman is
survived by her husband and eight children. They are: John,
Robert, Jim and Amos of Tulia; Edward L. of Oakdale, Calif.;
Mark L. of Pittsburg, Calif.; W. B. of Plainview; and George J.

| Stephens, T. J. |
The body of T. J.
Stephens, son of Mr. and Mrs. G. W. Stephens of Tulia, who was
killed in action the last war, will arrive in Elk City, Okla.
July 14. Funeral services will be Sunday, July 16, at the
Methodist Church in Sayre, Okla. Burial will be at Delhi; near
Elk City. T. J. was reported missing in action in May
1944. No other information was received until March 16, 1950
when the government reported his body had been identified.
The B 17 on which T. J. was a waist gunner was one of four ships
that crashed at Templefolder, Germany, ten miles from Berlin,
May 24, 1944. Two of the nine crew members survived the crash.
T. J. entered the Air Corps Dec. 16, 1942, and received his
training at Pyote, Harlingen and Amarillo Air bases. He went
overseas in March 1944. He was born Dec. 16, 1923 near
Sayre where he was reared. He attended elementary and high
school at Hext, Okla. He is survived by his parents; two
brothers, Borden Stephens of Amarillo and Ronald Stephens of
Tulia; and four sisters, Mrs. Clovis Seago, El Paso; Mrs. Merle
Mills, Plainview, Mrs. Marie Stringer, Prescott, Ariz.; and Mrs.
Fudda Hardin, Wellington. The Tulia Herald, 13 July

| Walters, Dallas W. |
Dallas W. Walters, formerly of Tulia, died recently in
Denver. Mr. Walters, 47 years old, was buried in Rose Hill
Cemetery Wednesday morning. He died January 2.
Funeral services were held in Wallace Funeral Home under the
direction of Rev. C. G. Sewell, pastor of the First Baptist
Church of Tulia. Mr. Walters was a veteran of WWII.
He left Tulia in 1939. His parents were the late Mr. and
Mrs. Dallas W. Walters, Sr. Survivors include the widow of
Houston; two sisters, Mrs. C. C. Tucker of San Angelo and Mrs.
Blanche Ballenter of Dallas; and two brothers, L. L. Walters of
Portland, Oregon and Press Walters of Grants, New Mexico.

| Webb, Mrs. George T. |
Dora Alie Webb, 80 years old, formerly of Tulia, died
Tuesday of this week in Canyon. Funeral services were held
Wednesday afternoon at the Church of Christ by Bro. Leland
Knight. Burial was in Rose Hill Cemetery. Mrs. Webb was
born in Titus and spent her youth in Wood County. She
married George T. Webb, who died in 1936, in 1887. They
moved to Swisher County and settled in the Vigo Park community
in 1891. She lived the past several years in Tulia, Happy
and Canyon. She was a member of the Church of Christ.
Survivors include two sons, T. M. Webb of Plainview and Tillman
Webb of Tulia; a daughter, Lilliam Webb of Plainview;
grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Burial was under
the direction of Wallace Funeral Home. |
| Wheeler, D. J. |
D. J. Wheeler, 65 years old, Tulia, died this week at his
home at 321 North Briscoe. Funeral services were held at 3
o'clock Wednesday afternoon in the First Baptist Church.
Rev. C. G. Sewell, pastor, conducted the service. Mr.
Wheeler, who died Monday night, was a deacon in the Baptist
Church. He moved to Tulia from Stratford in 1943. At
Stratford, he had grocery and farming interests. In Tulia,
he worked at K. Ramsey Furniture and Huxford's. He had
been ill about two years. Survivors include the widow and
three children. They are Herbert Wheeler of Mulvane,
Kansas and Mrs. Frances Flores and Mrs. Mable Lyming of Sedalia,
Missouri. Burial was in Rose Hill Cemetery under the
direction of Wallace Funeral Home. The Tulia Herald,

| Wilson, John L. |
John L. Wilson,
formerly of Swisher County, died in Hereford Monday of this
week. He was a cousin of John Rice, Tulia. Mr. and Mrs. Rice
went to Hereford Wednesday for the funeral services.

| Wood, T. F. |
T. F. Wood, 54 years old, of
Amarillo died Sunday at the home of his sister, Mrs. A. H. Earnest of Tulia. Funeral services were conducted
Tuesday afternoon at the First Baptist Church, Rev. C. G. Sewell, pastor,
officiated. Mr. Wood, who formerly had
operated a bakery in Tulia, arrived about 11:30 Sunday morning. He complained of
feeling sick and went into a bedroom to lie down. He was dead when Mrs. Earnest
went to summon him to lunch a short time later. He is survived by his wife: MRS.
MARJORIE WOOD, Amarillo; a brother, W. B. Wood, Crane, Texas; and two sisters,
Mrs. John Hanna, German, Tex.; and Mrs. Earnest of Tulia. Burial will be in Rose
Hill cemetery under the direction of Wallace Funeral Home. The Tulia

| Woods, John Irvin |
John Irvin Woods, 1417 Grand,
Amarillo, was killed in a highway crash 2 miles north of Happy Tuesday morning
of this week. James R Kirkwood highway patrolman
stationed in Tulia, investigated the wreck. He said Woods was a passenger in a
car driven by Fred Steve Newberry of Happy. A charge of murder without malice
was filed against Newberry. He moved here from Holley, Colo. The car was involved in
sideswiping a truck driven by Ray Drexile Carlisle of 712 West 12th , Plainview,
the officer said. The body of the dead man was not
identified until several hours after the wreck, the officer said. Identification
was made he explained, by men who had been working in Happy with Mr. Woods. The
body was taken to Griggs‑Thompson Funeral Home in Canyon. The fatal crash occurred in
Randall county, a short distance beyond the Swisher county line. Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon
for Wood. He had been working on a new elevator in Happy. The Tulia
