History was made on Sunday, February 11, 2007 with the chartering of Sarah Emma Edmonds Detached Tent #4, Houston Texas, taking place during the reenactment of the Battle of El Camino Real in Madisonville, Texas. National President Patricia Mullenix*, dressed in period clothing, conducted the Chartering Ceremony and the Installation of Officers amid the boom and rattling of gunfire taking place on a field near her sutlers tent, "The Ladies Parlor", thus creating a first time happening of a DUVCW Tent making its start in a tent during a civil war reenactment. The six inductees present flinched from time to time as the battle drew closer to the tents. Zipra Morgan*, President of Clara Barton Detached Tent #3, of Kerrville, Texas acted as her assistant.
*Patricia Mullenix is now the Past National President, and Zipra Morgan is now the Past President of the Clara Barton Tent

Preceding the chartering ceremony in Madionsville, Texas, a meeting was held on January 27, 2007. Five DUVCW sisters, lead by Susan Salm, our Organizing President, met on a cold and wet rainy day at the Tracy Gee Community Center in Houston, Texas., to lay some foundations down for the first Houston Tent. [Determined during the meeting was the name of the tent, dues amount, meeting dates and the meeting place.] One of the sisters was heard to remark, "we were the pioneers of the Houston Tent", or something similar. March 10, 2007, was the closing of our Charter. We have nineteen Charter members, nine of whom were at the meeting on March 10.
There was a bit of excitement that day, because a reporter from the Southwest Sun and Village News newspaper interviewed our Tent President, Susan Salm. The reporter brought a photographer with her, who took photos of the Charter Members who were present that day.
After the meeting, Martha Class, Senior Vice President, and one of our organizing members, presented Susan Salm with a card from our Tent to thank her for all of her hard work as the Organizing President of our Tent. Susan's role as Organizing President started at least six months prior to those of our other organizing officers. In addition to the card, Martha also presented our Tent with a cake to officially commemorate the occasion

The cake to commemorate the Closing of our Charter
The Chartered members of the Sarah Emma Edmonds Tent are composed of Sisters from other Texas tents, out of state tents and members at large. With the presence of this Tent in Houston, we can now be active participants in DUVCW.
During the Tent Meeting on Saturday, April 11, 2009, the members watched as Jean Barnhill, Patriotic Instructor; unwrapped the framed Tent Charter that now includes all of the names of the Charter Members.
The members of the Sarah Emma Edmonds Tent draw from Harris, Fort Bend, Montgomery, Brazoria, Galveston, Liberty, Waller, Chambers, Austin, and San Jacinto Counties, these ten counties make up the metropolitan area of Houston. We welcome new members wishing to honor their ancestors' service to preserve the Nation and to honor our present day military veterans as well.
