Memoirs of a Boy Soldier

The speaker for our Tent meeting on Saturday, October 29, 2011 was Jim Hackett. Jim is a Past Camp Commander of the Lt. Cmdr. Edward Lea, USN Camp #2. the local affiliate chapter of the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War in Houston, Texas; and he is also a member of the Sons of Veterans Reserve. Jim gave a presentation about his great-grandfather and Civil War Patriot, Corporal Thaddeus N. Hendrickson. Thaddeus served in Company H, I, 4th Regiment, Kentucky Mounted Infantry Volunteers from March 25, 1864 to August 17, 1865. Jim talked about his growing up hearing stories about his great-grandfather from his grandmother, who was a Real Daughter and a member of the DUVCW 1861-1865. [Photos of Jim during his talk]

Jim gave everyone a handout which included a photo of Thaddeus Hendrickson, and a letter from a fellow Civil War veteran who later served with the U.S. Army in the West. In his letter to Hendrickson, the veteran spoke of thoughts about why General Custer and his Army were massacred at the Battle of Little Bighorn.

Immediately following Jim's presentation, everyone enjoyed sampling all the various salads that were brought for our Pot Luck Salad lunch. After everyone finished eating, it was time for photos.
