CONTRIBUTED BY: Joan Thompson [popparat@valornet.com] Faye Joyce Polk 1909-2005 SAN FRANCISCO — Faye Joyce Polk, a native of Scurry County, Texas, died Tuesday, Nov. 1, 2005, in Kaiser Hospital in San Francisco following a short illness. Mrs. Polk had lived in San Angelo for 25 years. A memorial service for Mrs. Polk, who was 96, is being planned for next April at Community Hills Christian Church in San Angelo, where she was a member prior to her move to San Francisco in 1996. Born July 25, 1909, the fifth of seven daughters, Faye graduated from Texas Tech University and later earned a master’s degree from Southeastern State Teacher’s College in Durant, Okla. She taught both junior high school and special education classes, and even coached a boys’ baseball team during her long career as a schoolteacher. She taught in the seventh grade at Robert E. Lee Junior High School in San Angelo. She retired from teaching in 1974. She married Marion Gibson “Doc” Polk on June 30, 1935, in Snyder. He died Aug. 30, 1992. His last years were dimmed by Alzheimer’s disease, during which time Faye cared for him with loyalty and love. Faye was also preceded in death by her parents, Robert E. Joyce and Laura Sturdivant Joyce; and by her son, B. Frank Polk, M.D., who was a respected epidemiologist at Johns Hopkins University. Survivors include her son, Ed J. Polk of San Francisco; daughter-in-law, Kathleen Polk of Baltimore; Faye’s younger sister, Milton Joyce Vicary of Houston; six grandchildren, Susan Polk Adkins, Karen Polk, Kevin Polk, Sarah Polk, Maury Polk and Genevieve Polk; and six great-grandchildren.
