William Lakey Cemetery

Printed with permission of the San Augustine Public Library Board of Directors.  Originally contributed by Mrs. Billie Faye Brown Gary and Mrs. Mary Ann Gary.

Location: From Broaddus travel east on Hwy 83 to FM 1751.  Turn right, go 7/10 mile turn right on a dirt road.  Go about 1/2 mile and take the right hand fork.  Go about 3/4 mile.  Take the left hand fork.  The cemetery is located a short distance on the right in the woods.   In 1988 Wesley Lakey hacked marks on the trees along the fence row.  The old wire around the cemetery could still be seen.  The Lakey Cemetery is near Sam Rayburn Lake.  The old William Lakey homestead, located just south of the cemetery, is now under water.  Nearby, west, is the old Boney Howard homesite.

In 1988 the Corp of Engineers placed a monument on the grave of William Lakey with the assistance of Mrs. Winnie Lakey Byerly.  This is the only monument in the cemetery at the time this was indexed in 1992.

The number of graves in this cemetery is unknown although it is thought to be 20-25.  Members of the Lakey family and likely members of other neighboring families are interred here.  The identity of 8 people is known,
