Servicemen's Flag

by Minnie L. Bartsch

Estelle Seidel spent many hours reproducing the Servicemens Flag that once hung in Sacred Heart Church. The original was lost and she worked very hard to copy the flag from a photo. She also talked with several people including Olga Wilhelm who remembered her mother, Sophie Bartsch, making the flag. Each name was put on as the young man left for service. His name, written out by Sophie on a 2x10 inch piece of white material, was embroidered by his mother or wife or sweetheart. Then Sophie sewed the name on the flag. The flag is a bit larger than the original but is a great reproduction. We thank Estelle for her dedication in making and donating this replica of the original flag to the Museum.
