WEDDING BELLS AT REFUGIO

Scions of Old Families are United in Marriage and Commence a New Life Attended by Sincere Wishes of a Host of Friends

At the Roman Catholic church in Refugio, Texas, at 7 a.m. November 26th  1891, Mr. John O'Brien, jr., was married to Miss Nannie Hart, Rev. T.J. Flynn officiating.

The contracting parties are both natives and residents of the small but historic and aristocratic town of Refugio.  They are descendants of that hardy band of Irish immigrants who came and settled at the Mission Refugio when Texas was a part of Mexico, and who endured all the misfortunes heaped upon Texas by that nest of revolution and home of oppression, in order to carve out the princely fortunes that are held by the few remaining patriarchs and by the descendants of those who have gone before.  Those days of privation and suffering taught them the value of friendship and hospitality and these virtues found such rare exemplification in these two young people as to render them great favorites and, independent of this high financial standing, secured them cordial welcome at all gatherings of the elite of the community.

Although the hour was very early and weather chilly, a large number gathered at the church to witness the ceremony.  The bridal party arrived at the hour appointed and entered the church in the following order:  Miss Nannie Hart bride elect escorted by Mr. C.L. Doughty.  Miss Mamie Hart, sister of the bride, escorted by Mr. John O'Brien jr. the groom elect.  Miss Agnes O'Brien, sister of the groom, escorted by Mr. J.O. West.

As the first couple entered the church the organist began playing a wedding march at the conclusion of which the genial Father Flynn performed the ceremony in his most inimitable style, omitting none of the pomp of the ceremonial of his church.

The groom and groomsmen were arrayed in regulation suits of black.

The bride was dressed in cream grosgrain silk trimmed with orange blossoms and feather trimming court train.

Miss Mamie Hart, first bridsmaid, dressed in China silk trimmed with Madras lace.

Miss Agnes O'Brien, second bridesmaid, dressed in white surah silk trimmed with ribbon.

After the marriage a member of friends and relatives repaired to the residence of the brides parents to offer congratulations and partake of the wedding breakfast.  the table was truly that which has been said to be a joy forever, a thing of beauty.  After a short while spent in admiring the dazzling array of cakes, candies, jellies, nuts, fruits, flowers and numerous other things eatable and drinkable, your correspondent concluded that as he could not expect to partake of all the good things of this world he must also expect to leave untasted many of the good things of that feast, therefore as it was Thanksgiving day we thanked the Lord for friends, for weddings and wedding breakfasts, ate what we could and retired to admire the array of wedding presents.

At night there was a ball at the courthouse where the bride and groom received the congratulations of their host of friends and where young and old...
