Hello: Donna and Merry Christmas to All and A Happy New Year from Jimmie
and Nancy Draper.
***********************************************Donna,
I have a
very interested Story about Asa lee Draper The Special Texas Ranger and
his Family. Not only was his Father John Jasper Draper a large Texas
Cattle Operator, but he was born in Pontotoc County Mississippi in 1848,
around 1862 at a very young age he entered into the Civil-War in Pike
County Arkansas, after the Civil-War sometime around 1869 he took
advantage of a very large chunk of land in Wilson County Texas, this
land was sold in 1870 and he purchased land in Palo-Pinto county Texas,
this is where Asa Lee Draper was born, but he also owned a large ranch
in Wilson County and lived in Sutherland Springs, according to family he
won a very large ranch in a poker game, and gave it to his sons John
Coats Draper and Asa Lee Draper both became Special Texas Rangers in
1918, the Name of the Ranch was the Santa Rita Ranch and it is Located
in Jim Hogg County, more about these Drapers can be gleamed from a book
at the Hebbronville library called the 50th Anniversary of Jim Hogg
County. I assume the reason for John Jasper Draper sold the Ranch in
Winkler County Texas was it would had been a very dangerous place, being
Apache and Commache stomping ground.
sincerely Jimmie Draper

Hello: Donna, Yes to publishing that article, and there is an old
article I located in Midland Texas library, that was written by the
daughter of Arminta Draper Estes, which was one of the daughters of John
Jasper Draper and the sister to Asa and John Coats Draper, it gives a
very nice story about that family, I will forward you a picture of Asa
Lee Draper, I have only recently acquired.
sincerely Jimmie L Draper

Hello: Donna before I forget it, a great grandson of Asa told me that
John Jasper Draper loved to play poker and even gambled with Doc Holiday
and won the Sutherland Springs ranch in a poker game.
