Young Thomas Cantrell Came On Visit To County And Stayed

On a visit to his maternal grandmother in Texas in 1892, young James Thomas Cantrell of Acworth, Georgia, decided to stay and make his home in Palo Pinto County.  His grandmother, Mrs. Martin Brannon, lived west of the Brazos, had lived here for some years then.  Her children were, sons, John, Bill, Harvey, Joe and Fred; daughters, Clementine (Mrs. Estes) and Lanora Angeline.

James Thomas Cantrell worked for the Texas and Pacific Railway and he and Willie Henrietta Bradford, daughter of J. T. Bradford and granddaughter of W. H. Bradford, were married April 6, 1900.  Mr. Cantrell became a registered pharmacist and owned and operated a drug store at Brazos, also a rock crusher west of Brazos.  The only child of the couple is Clara, who married B. A. Buzbee and lives in Mineral Wells.

Mr. Cantrell moved with his family to Santo in 1908 and there he operated a general merchandise store until 1918.  He built a cotton gin at Santo and also engaged in farming and ranching.  At the time land was being secured for Possum Kingdom Dam, he helped in making the purchases.  In 1945, he and Mrs. Cantrell moved to Mineral Wells where he died in 1947.  Mrs. Cantrell continues to make her home here.
