May Day Community Worship, Dinner And Unveiling

May Day Community Worship started at 10:45 a.m. Sunday, May 5, in a roped off section of a street adjacent to the Courthouse in Palo Pinto.  The replica of the first courthouse in Palo Pinto was used as a stand for the minister, Rev. S. W. Hutton, pastor of the Christian Church.  A red organ of ancient vintage belonging to Mrs. (Margaret Yeager) Costello, was used in the services and old-time hymns were used.  Mrs. Garve Taylor was organist, and R. L. E. Cox, Methodist pastor of Palo Pinto, was song leader.

After the invocation by Alvin Maddox, Rev. R. L. Caywood, pastor of the Baptist Church, made church and community announcements, closing with a welcome to the visitors.  Ushers were Oscar Taylor, Bill Nicks, and Ross Watson.

"Singing His Praises" was the subject of the message brought by Rev. S. W. Hutton, pastor of the Christian Church of Palo Pinto, after scripture readings by L. E. Boone.  Curtis Mitchell said the benediction.

At noon, a basket picnic was spread on tables in the roped off section of the street.  Arrangements for the dinner were made by the Palo Pinto Boosters Club, John Winters president.  They worked tirelessly on plans, changing, as all committees of the celebration have been forced to do, as rains changed their plans.  The sun shone brightly during the day as old acquaintances ate and enjoyed reminiscences of the past.  Some "only knew your family", but they were all happy to meet and talk as they had had no opportunity to do for many years.

Descendants of many old-time families were present, some coming from great distances.  Some had never visited Palo Pinto before but were happy to meet those who knew their families in days past.

Two exhibits that were of interest to those attending the events in Palo Pinto Sunday were the Cincinnati press made in 1838, which was on exhibit in the Star office and one in a filling station east of the courthouse.  Mrs. Beulah McDonald arranged a showing of pioneer items that would be proud exhibits of a museum.  Most of the articles had to do with the early history of this county.
