I. W. Cox and Wife Came To Palo Pinto County In 1855

It was in 1855 that I. W. Cox and his wife, Elizabeth Ann, came to Palo Pinto County and although they only lived here for nine years, going on to where Menard now is, they left a house that is still standing in Palo Pinto and is still occupied.  The home they built at Bowie Springs, near Menard, is also a landmark.  In 1863, Cox sold the house to a Mr. Devers.  He was in several fights with Indians, the best known was that at Horse Head Crossing on the Pecos River where he lost a herd of cattle.  The fight lasted for 3 days and the beleaguered men were relieved by the Scnively expedition (hunting for gold).

Cox took part in the organization of this county and served as a public officer before leaving here.  Mrs. Cox taught the first school near the Brazos River and later taught with Mr. Baker when he opened his school at Golconda.  She died at Palo Pinto in 1862.

A grandson of the couple, Ernest W. Wilson of Abilene, has copies of documents and letters, one of which is from a pupil, Mr. Cureton, a pupil of Mrs. Cox at Golconda.

No descendants live in the county but are scattered over the country.  R. E. Cox of Ft. Worth; Mrs. Virginia Cain also of Ft. Worth, Ernest W. Wilson, attorney of Abilene, and Maj. Ernest W. Wilson Jr., flying veteran of two wars, and Horace Pete Wilson of New York.
