I. W. Cox and Wife Came
To Palo Pinto County In 1855 |
||
It was in 1855 that I. W. Cox and his wife, Elizabeth
Ann, came to Palo Pinto County and although they only lived here for
nine years, going on to where Menard now is, they left a house that is
still standing in Palo Pinto and is still occupied. The home they
built at Bowie Springs, near Menard, is also a landmark. In 1863,
Cox sold the house to a Mr. Devers. He was in several fights with
Indians, the best known was that at Horse Head Crossing on the Pecos
River where he lost a herd of cattle. The fight lasted for 3 days
and the beleaguered men were relieved by the Scnively expedition
(hunting for gold). |
