Hazelwood Family Arrived In Palo Pinto County 1857

Calvin Thomas and Martha McCracken Hazelwood arrived in Palo Pinto in 1857 after their marriage in Tarrant County.  They settled at Hazelwood Spring and began the life of the few other pioneers here at the time.

Only one child of this couple is living, Mrs. Mamie Eaves of Los Angeles, Calif.  Three grandchildren, Lora and J. Pat Corrigan and Mrs. Olivia McKay, live in Palo Pinto County.  Another grandchild, Hugh Corrigan Jr., lives at Vero Beach, Fla., and a number of other descendants are scattered over many states.

They underwent the hardships of the frontier, fighting for existence.  A number of their horses and cattle were stolen by Indians and one brother of Hazelwood was killed by Indians in an adjoining county.  Mr. Hazelwood was a member of Capt. McAdams' Home Rangers which he organized to protect citizens and also fought in the War with  Mexico in 1846.

The home of the oldest daughter of the Hazelwoods, built by her husband, Hugh Corrigan, is still standing in Palo Pinto and is a landmark.  It is now owned by George Metcalf.  Lumber for the house was hauled by ox team.
