Stephen H. Harris and Sarah Came To Texas, 1857

D. C. Harris, Sr.                               Mrs. D. C. Harris, Sr.

Stephen H. Harris and Sarah Coleman Harris, natives of North Carolina, were married August 30, 1827, and came to Palo Pinto County in 1857, after living for a time in Kentucky.  They settled 7 miles northeast of Golconda in what is now known as Harris Bend of the Brazos.  Harris was a Missionary Baptist preacher and grain farmer and the log cabin he built there is still standing, chimney and all.  An old live oak tree that was at the corner of the cabin is still growing and is 27 feet around.  The Harris Ranch is still owned by the family.  The elder Harris died in 1865 leaving his son, David Cook, the care of his mother and sisters.  The Civil war was still in progress for several years thereafter, the family lived in the midst of difficulties and dangers due to the presence of hostile Indians.  Mr. Harris was a stock-man and farmer and was a devout Baptist.

D. C. Harris Sr. married Jennie Slaughter, April 11, 1880.  She was the daughter of Rev. and Mrs. George Webb Slaughter.  The Harris children were Dottie May who married R. A. Peak; Mase Slaughter who married George Metcalf; Sallie Belle, who married B. A. Blackman; Columbus Webb who married Mrs. Nan Autrey; Millie Frances who married Alvin Maddox; and D. C. Jr., who married Mrs. Helen Smith Davis.  Grandchildren are Dot Peak (Mrs. Cameron) Guinn; Lela Belle Harris (Mrs. Crittenden Abernathy); Jennie Jowell Metcalf (Mrs. M. F. Ewton); Aubrey Harris Blackman (deceased) and Jennie Margaret Blackman (Mrs. E. Wilson) Germany.

Great-grandchildren are Cameron Webb Guinn, David Harold Guinn, Maynard F. Ewton, Dorothy Jo Abernathy, Samuel Crittenden Abernathy, Samuel Crittenden Abernathy, Lela Jane Abernathy, Wesley Harris Germany (adopted) and Joan Lee Germany (adopted).
