Ed E. Dismuke, popular businessman and owner of the
Famous Water Company, passed his 97th birthday last March, at his home 608
NW 6th Street.
In an interview with Mr. Dismuke's wife, she stated that he was looking
forward to his 98th birthday with as much enthusiasm as a kid, and
remarked: "the only thing wrong with me is old age." Mrs.
Dismuke says each morning he drinks a tea glass of mineral water,
"Famous," of course, then if he doesn't snap out of it she gives
him a good massage, to get the circulation going ...."that's pretty
good for a man who had to sell out his drug business in Waco in 1900
because of poor health. I had stomach trouble, the doctors told me I
couldn't be with them much longer. You know, those doctors died
years ago."
After a long search for a cure, Mr. Dismuke came to Mineral Wells, hearing
that this was a great health resort.
After drinking the water here I was better in a month, he declared.
He was so enthusiastic he founded his own water company in 1904. His
wife is now president of the Famous Water Company which he founded.
Mr. and Mrs. Dismuke have been married 25 years. His first wife died
only a few months before they would have celebrated their golden wedding
anniversary.
Ed Dismuke, one of Mineral Wells' business and civic pioneers, remains
alert and active, is regarded as one of the city's builders and a great
booster of the health giving waters.
He was a leader in building Old Pinto Lake, for many years the city's main
water supply and helped build the city's first artificial gas plant.
A chemist and druggist by trade, Mr. Dismuke has an active hand in running
the water business.
His mind is clear on the past and present events. He can talk for
hours, switch to a different line of thought and pick up where a previous
subject was dropped with hardly a stop for breath.
Mr. Dismuke has never had the services of a doctor, he has never been in a
hospital......never had a "shot"....he figures you don't need
that sort of thing if you drink his Famous water and take his firm's
Pronto-Lax.
Mr. Dismuke started smoking at nine, has smoked cigars for more than half
a century.
I used to smoke a lot of cigars, now I'm trying trying cut down to six or
seven a day.
