E. P. Crabtree Family Braved Indian Raids Back In 1879

E. P. Crabtree, with his wife arrived in Palo Pinto County in 1879, coming from Cooke County where they were married February 29, 1876 (leap year).  Mrs. Crabtree was Martha E. Johnston before her marriage.  They started to this county in 1878 but heard of Indian raids and returned home to wait a year before moving.

Their first home was a large log cabin on Eagle Creek and their first furniture was home made of Elm saplings.  Later lumber was brought in and a larger house was built and furniture bought.  They were members of the Church of Christ.

Crabtree died November 19, 1941, near his 90th birthday and his wife died a few years later.  Their children were J. H. Crabtree of Huckaby and John Crabtree and Mrs. C. B. Couger both of Palo Pinto.  At one time they lived in the home of their daughter, Mrs. Crabtree, and at the same time Mrs. Wilma Lowe and her sons, Billie and Frank Lowe, lived in the home also, making four generations.  Four generations of their descendants still live in the county -- Mrs. Couger, her son Winifred Couger, and his son, 4 year old Randy, live near Strawn.
