Byron Maddox Ex-Sheriff Arrived In 1873

A year after Byron Newton Maddox and Martha Rowe were married in Ohio County, Kentucky (1873), they moved to Palo Pinto County, Texas.  Both natives of Kentucky, Mrs. Maddox was born January 16, 1856 and Mr. Maddox, November 3, 1851.  Both died in this county in 1938 and 1933, respectively, and are buried at Palo Pinto .

On their arrival here, they settled west of Palo Pinto on Dodson Prairie and were charter members of the Slaughter Valley and Palo Pinto Baptist churches.  Part of the original log cabin they built is standing on the homestead, and Sam Bass, outlaw, once spent the night at the home while traveling, incognito after one of his escapades.  The men of the family were away helping to build a church in Slaughter Valley and only Mrs. Maddox, her mother and sister were at home.  Accounts of this have been published in several articles in Texas.

Mr. Maddox was sheriff of Palo Pinto and the couple took part in church and civic activities during their lives.

Descendants living in Palo Pinto County are Alvin Maddox and Mrs. May Maddox Smith of Palo Pinto.  Other descendants are Alvin Newton Maddox, Jr., Mrs. Nancy Maddox Vaughan, Wilson Trent and Nancy Katheryn Vaughan, Clarence Hall Smith, Martha Virginia Smith, Gregory Hall Smith, Marcia Virginia Smith, Felicia Claire Smith and Eugenia May Smith.
