The Ed Bells Early Day Cafe Operator At Gordon, Texas

Mrs. Dora Rogers sent in an interesting story of Mrs. Ed Bell, 86, of Gordon.  Following the Civil War, Mrs. Bell, nee Vicie Simpson, daughter of Thomas H. Simpson, and with her father and two small sisters came from their native Illinois to join relatives who has come here earlier.  The mother of the children had died in Illinois.

They landed in Gordon in 1882 during a blue norther, which was quite a surprise to them as they expected Texas to be a land of sunshine.  An open hack, the only conveyance available, was secured from Jake Kerr's livery stable to go to the little town of X-ray south of Gordon.

A few years later, young Vicie decided to go to Gordon to attend school, living in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Dock Ables and at one of the gay dances of the time, met Ed Bell, a dashing cowboy whom she later married.  They established a grocery and cafe business in March of 1898 and the cafe became famous throughout the region for their special dishes.  After Mr. Bell's death, Mrs. Bell and her son, Elmer, continued to operate the cafe until 1946 when they retired and are now living at Gordon.
