Inspiration Point, Beauty Spot On the Brazos River, In Palo Pinto County

At a spot nine miles south of Mineral Wells a high bluff overlooks the winding Brazos River below giving a view of rare beauty to the beholder.  The broad stream has the look of a tiny rivulet and one can see for miles over the country.  For many years the road south led straight to this beauty spot, which is known as Inspiration Point, but the new road runs a short distance to the east, but it is still accessible to visitors as well as those who wish to drive out to view it.

Penitentiary Hollow is another name familiar to visitors of a few years back and to residents.  It is a picturesque spot unspoiled by civilization and may be reached by boat across Lake Mineral Wells or by driving around the lake to it.  Lake Mineral Wells itself is a beauty spot often visited and fishing is usually good there.  It is situated 3 miles east of Mineral Wells and is some 40 miles in circumference.

Worth Ranch, the Ft. Worth Area Council camp for boy Scouts is four miles north of Palo Pinto and located on the Brazos River.  It was opened about 1930 and is an ideal spot for its purpose.

There are many beauty spots along the Brazos including Hells Gate and the Gordon Mountain country where, in autumn, leaves of every hue may be seen.  Caves, hills and hollows, rocky ledges of many colors are to be seen about the countryside in many places.  Sam Bass Canyon in the west section of the county is well knowqn but seldom seen by visitors on account of its inaccessibility.

Possum Kingdom Lake (Morris Shepherd Dam), furnishes fishing and scenery rarely seen in these parts, also.  Lovers Retreat well known to many, especially those who visited this county years ago is the subject of another story.
