Andrew Young Pitts and Alice Newberry were married
august 8, 1883, in Fannin County, Texas, and came to Palo Pinto County
in 1900. Mr. Pitts came to Texas with his father, A. J. Pitts from
Mississippi in 1866 when he was 10 years old, and Mrs. Pitts came with
her father, Jesse Newberry of Alabama, in 1858, when she was 3 years
old. Mr. Pitts was a farmer and he died in this county May 25,
1914. Mrs. Pitts died September 30, 1933, and both are buried in New
Hope Cemetery, near Lone Camp. They were members of the
Christian Church.
A daughter of A. Y. Pitts, Mrs. Emma Roye, and her family live at Gordon
at this time and other living descendants include Mrs. Lena Williams of
South Bend; Judge E. L. Pitts of Amarillo and Mrs. Marie Sullivan of
Graham.
When the children were still at home the family moved to a farm on
Dodson Prairie, which has since been sold to the county for a county
farm. After moving there, they cleared the farm and lived there
for several years, attending school. Children of the couple that
are dead are Jesse J. Pitts (buried at New
Hope), Allen R. Pitts (buried at Palo
Pinto) and Walter P. Pitts who was buried at Gordon
The son, E. L. Pitts taught school in Palo Pinto County six years
after attending college at Commerce and the University of Texas.
After teaching school, he was elected county superintendent of schools,
serving 8 years. He was then elected county judge and was serving
in that capacity when the first paved roads were built in the
county. He moved to Lubbock at the end of his last term as county
judge in 1929. In that county he served 6 years as county judge
and 6 years as district judge, after which he was elected Chief Justice
of the Supreme Court of Civil Appeals at Amarillo and he is serving his
15th year in that capacity. Pitts married Lilla Belle Llewellyn of
Fort Worth and they have two daughters, Mrs. A. C. (Lois) Stevens and
Mrs. C. P. (Virginia Lee) Newman. Their grandchildren are Jimmy
Stevens, age 17, and Christopher (age 7) and Ted (age 4) Newman.
Both their children and grandchildren live in California.
