Services:  Tuesday, Jan. 3 at 11 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Roby under the direction of Weathersbee-Ray Funeral Home. Visitiation will be Monday, Jan. 2 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Weathersbee-Ray Funeral Home.

Riggins of Dallas; a sister, Doris Tacker of Luling; eight grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchilren.


 

Richard Robert Mena

Died:  Saturday, Dec. 31, 2005, at Baylor Hospital in Dallas.

Services:  Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2006, at St. Elizabeth's with Father Roy Badillas officiating.

Burial:  Hillside Memorial Gardens under the direction of Bell-Cypert-Seale Funeral Home.

Born:  March 20, 1953, in Post.

Raised in: Snyder and lived there until 1988. At the time of his death he resided in Dumas. He had also lived in Merkel.

Occupation: retired oil field worker, working as a foreman on workover rigs.

Survived by: four daughters, April Flores of Dumas; Robyn Mena and Meagan Mena, both of Sweetwater; and Crystal Bedderra Rodriguez of Dallas, one sister, Linda Westbrook of Plano; and four grandchildren.


 

Julia A. Covey

Died: Jan. 4, 2006, in Sweetwater.

Parents: Hattie Pearl (Blake) and Ernest Melton Lyde

Born: Nov. 25, 1919, in Carey, Texas

Graduated from: high school in Dodsonville, Texas.

Married: Arvil Winford Covey on Nov. 27, 1937, in Hollis, Okla.

Occupation: was a school secretary and librarian,

Predeceased in death by: her parents, Hattie P. and Ernest M. Lyde of Petersburg; two brothers, Noble Lyde of Lubbock, and Blake Lyde of Petersburg; and a sister, Jewel Trantham of Richardson.

Survivors:   husband, Arvil Winford Covey of Sweetwater; daughters, Theresa Henry and husband, Marvin, of Archer City, and Gwenda Riggs and husband, Jerry, of Sweetwater; six grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by a sister, Betty McGaugh of Lubbock; brother, Billy Ray “Bill” Lyde of Dallas, and sister-in-law, Ruth Lyde of Petersburg.

 

Funeral service:  10 a.m. Friday, Jan. 6, 2006, at Fourth and Elm Church of Christ in Sweetwater with Minister Joe Bagby and Wendell Whittenburg officiating.

Interment: Graveside service at 4 p.m. in Plainview Memorial Park in Plainview, Texas.

 


 

Slater Lee Simmons

Died: Thursday, Jan. 5, 2006, in Abilene (in a traffic accident).

Funeral services:  2:30 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 8, 2006, in the Nolan United Methodist Church  with the Revs. Richard Petree and Tom Thomson officiating.

Burial:  Slater's Chapel Cemetery 

Born: Aug. 29, 1980, in Sweetwater.

Affiliations: He made mission trips to Guyana, South America and served two years for Youth With A Mission. He also did mission work in Lindell, some East Coast states and Mexico.

Church:  Nolan United Methodist Church

Military: served his country as a combat engineer in the U.S. Army, serving in Iraq and was stationed in Germany.

School: Sweetwater and Blackwell and graduated in 1999 from Blackwell High School. Occupation:  worked for U.S. Gypsum Company in Sweetwater.

Survivors:  2 daughters, Marcy Ann Conway (of Tuscon, AZ), and Debbie Lynn Hammer (of Windsor, CO); 4 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren; 3 sisters-in-law, Ruby Cox, Marie Moore and Myrl Frazier (all of Sweetwater), and several nieces.
