A DOUBLE FUNERAL

One of the saddest scenes we have witnessed recently was that at the cemetery Wednesday afternoon when two little children five and six years of age respectively, cried out with breaking hearts as the remains of father and mother were lowered into the tomb.

The funeral was that of Mr. and Mrs. Luther Reed (Luther Henry Reed & Velma Lee Savell-Reed) whose home was four miles south of Champion. Several weeks ago Mr. Reed and his family went to New Mexico where Mr Reed found employment. Recently they started to return to their home in a car accompanied by Mrs. Reed’s brother, Luke Savell. They encountered some heavy snow storms and took the influenza.

Upon reaching Amarillo they stopped at a hotel for treatment. The condition of Mr. and Mrs. Reed and Savell became so serious that the landlord wired Mr. Reed’s father, A. M. Reed, who also lives near Champion but was temporarily in San Jacinto county with some stock. He and Mrs. Reed immediately left for Amarillo, upon their arrival found Mr. Savell in a dying condition. [Note as per Ruby Deen REED Nivens: Savell died Oct 31st.)

Their son Luther died the next day, Nov 1st. His wife was in such a serious condition that they could not leave her and she died on Tuesday morning, Nov. 5th. The remains of Mr. Savell had been sent to relatives at Cisco, where he was interred. The remains of Mr. and Mrs. Luther Reed were sent to Roscoe, arriving Wednesday morning. Interment took place in the I.O.O.F. Cemetery that afternoon, the funeral services being conducted by Rev G W Butler of the Baptist Church.

Mr. and Mrs. Reed has been residents of this country less than a year, yet they had made many warm friends. They each presented a noble, Christian character. Besides a father and mother, they leave two little girls desolate and bereft. May the great Comforter be very near to them in this hour of trial and in the coming years
