MARY TYLER CHAPTER, NSDARwas organized February 28, 1907, by Miss Jennie Mae Perry, and is located in Tyler, Smith County, Texas. It was named for the mother of John Tyler, tenth President of the United States of America. |
Tyler, the world's largest grower of commercially produced roses, is the home of the Texas Rose Festival. The third weekend in October, the Queen is crowned with great pagenantry. Thousands of people come to Tyler to attend the Parade, Rose Show, and many other festivities. The Rose Museum relates the history of the Rose Industry and the Texas Rose Festival in a delightful way. From late spring until frost, the Tyler Municipal Rose Garden blooms with nearly 40,000 rose bushes exhibiting approximately 500 varieties of roses. |
In the spring, thousands of people come again to Tyler to view the magnificent azaleas which bloom profusely in this beautiful city. The projects of the Mary Tyler Chapter, NSDAR, are as varied as the flowers in Tyler. The chapter strives to help deserving young people in the Tyler area to attain an education with scholarships. Contributions are made to the DAR Schools which provide educational opportunities that would otherwise be unavailable to the populations they serve. |
Patriotism is promoted through programs which uplift our country by observances of Constitution Week, flag retirement services, naturalization ceremonies, and support of our armed forces. American History is promoted in the schools through writing contests and in our Captain Samuel Mosby Society, Children of the American Revolution. Native American students are helped with scholarships and camp programs.
Do you have a Revolutionary Patriot in your family? If so, consider becoming a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Contact Jo Williamson, Registrar, for more information about becoming a member of the Mary Tyler Chapter. |
